I picked this banjo up from a thrift store for 120 dollars, pretty much in new condition. I've had it for about a year now and have been playing for about a year. Initially, it sounded mediocre at best. This was due to bad strings, high action, and very low stock bridge. I picked up some Earthwood Banjo Strings and a 1/2 inch bridge, slapped those on. Also lowered the action about as low as I could go without sacrificing any sound quality. Now, after all these alterations which you could have a professional do, including parts, for probably about 40 dollars, it sounds really amazing. No fret buzz, loud as you'd ever need. Another suggestion if you purchase, do not hook your strap to the triangle, metal hooks that come on this banjo. They will break, as they do on most banjos. I just hook my strap to the fasteners that hold the head on.Overall, if you're a beginner or intermediate players and want a banjo with a resonator, this is the one I'd suggest. Most instruments need work to fit your style of playing and to get the sound you like, so expect to change bridges, strings, action, etc... for most instruments.

I really thought I was gonna get me something nice here on this banjo. It is nice looking,BUT not even close to being playable after setting the bridge, for tone and innotation. It has string noise when played open, on the 2nd and 3rd strings. Didnt have that Banjo twang I was looking for either.Cheap tuners kept me busy tunning the instrument...... Not worth the fight.
It has allready been returned, and I bought a Recording King R20 used at a local shop with nice geared tuners, brass tone ring etc. etc.etc.....
My advice.... Save a few more dollars and get something you wont have to have worked on just to be able to play!
Cheap Tuners, and hardware!!! Alluminum tone ring will cost you sound. Cheap strings to boot!
Really let down!
Save your money a while longer.

First lesson and this banjo sounded great. Great for a first timer who wants to practice or for performing. Very impressed with sound quality and solid manufacturing of instrument. I popped 3 strings as soon as I got it bc I am new to the banjo. Decided to have it professionally strung and tuned... Worth the money!

Comments about Fender FB-54 5-String Banjo:

I bought this Banjo to learn on at the request of my wife (And if she's giving the go ahead to buy a new instrument, I'm buying). I was very pleased when it arrived, it looks gorgeous and has a great tone to it. Of course, I'm a guitar player looking to learn something new and it serves my needs very well. If you're an experienced banjo player it might not be your first choice, but it would seem that it would make a great backup or practice banjo. I purchased this as a "Stupid Deal of the Day" and for 150 it was definitely a steal. Fender quality instrument. Surprised to see it was made in China. It does require you to mount the bridge and do a set up, but if you're like me and willing to give it a shot, there are a ton of good instructions on line and on Google. If not, I don't see it being to expensive to take it to your local shop for the setup.

Comments about Fender FB-54 5-String Banjo:

Good Quality, I have only played the same banjo that I received for my 15th B-Day OVER 30 YEARS AGO I learned/Taught myself the instrument inside and out. Therefore I can only compare it to that one. A HONDO II This one seems a bit dull in tone. But it's very well made and the neck is dressed well. It has a geared 5th string and if you change to a light gauge string you can really turn up some ears. Everyone I play for says "WOW I'VE NEVER HEARD THE BANJO PLAYED LIKE THAT IN PERSON" Lean to Pick my friend!!!

Comments about Fender FB-54 5-String Banjo:

Got this banjo for a ridiculous price on stupid deal. Has nice tone and good projection. Well made and nice looking. Got the musicians gear hardcase to go with it and I'm pleased with it also. At this price, anyone who has ever considered learning to play has little to lose, and they will get a quality instrument that will probably be the only instrument they need unless they are going to gig with it.

Comments about Fender FB-54 5-String Banjo:

I'm an experienced guitarist (30 years playing) who just started playing banjo a little over a year ago, so I don't claim to know much about banjos. The FB-54 was the model I chose to learn on, because it had a nice sound compared to some other inexpensive models I tried, AND the price was right. It was a banjo I could afford, without ending up with a toy. Now that a year has passed by, I must say the FB-54 was an excellent purchase. I have no regrets. I've been playing it consistently since I purchased it, and it still sounds great, feels great (the neck is comfortable), stays in tune, and I have had no problems with it whatsoever, hardware or otherwise. I installed railroad spikes on mine (which wasn't very difficult), allowing me to play it in any key. It's been a great instrument. I can't see myself ever parting with it.
