So I posted the review below when the banjo was new. I have since replaced the tuners and have spent about two years playing this thing. My opinion of it has only grown better. This banjo is rock solid, beautiful in every way, and just a fantastic instrument. I get complements on its sound constantly. People truly believe its a more expensive instrument than it is. The tuners I put on are fantastic, really tight, smooth, just perfect. So I still stand by replacing the tuners when you get this. If you do, you'll have something that can hang with the big bad Gibsons. My friend has a Gibson, its a great Banjo, but we're often using mine for recordings because its more stable, and has a bigger tone that his does. I just can't say enough about this banjo, Fender... thank you so much for letting the working man have some fun.

i was really disappointed with this banjo and maybe even more so with fender. it looks nice online, but it's really a different story once it arrives. the inlays are cheap white plastic. the rosewood fingerboard feels like cardboard and looks cheap. the resonator is a laminate and the rim is plywood. the tuners are cheap plastic and have a lot of play, making it very difficult to keep this thing in tune. the bridge would not keep the 5th string in place allowing it to slip to the 4th position evertime i strummed it. this requires so much set up out of the box that you might as well have it shipped to a local music store so that they can set it up for you (unless you know how to do it but then again, if you did, you wouldn't be buying this banjo). strong NO BUY from this reviewer. i returned mine and bought the less expensive, watered down, deering goodtime which has been great. the sound on that banjo is better than this junky fender, despite not having a resonator. no setup other than tuning required.

As Good as I Wanted

By greenclay007

Comments about Fender FB-55 Banjo:

This is a good banjo for the money. I have played with Gibsons and other banjos and this one hangs right there with them. It has good volume and plays well. It did require some additional setup like tightening the tuners up and the j-hooks and also does not have the pegs for the 5th string, but for the money its spot on. Definetly will have this banjo for a long time.

Check the setup and assembly before purchasing

Comments about Fender FB-55 Banjo:

The Fender FB-55 was my first banjo and I struggled to keep it in tune and the neck from loosening for altogether too long. There wasn't anyone to solve the problem where I bought the banjo, so finally I took it all apart and reassembled it myself. Since then it has stayed in tune and the loose neck problems have disappeared. I attribute this to a very poor assembly and set up from the factory. It seemed ok when I bought it and tried it out at a local music store, but began to have problems with it at home. I bought the banjo based on my experience with Fender guitars years ago. But having something come from Fender that was so poorly assembled and set up was a big disappointment for me, and I doubt if I will ever buy a Fender product again. My Fender FB-55 sits mainly in the closet now as I have purchased another banjo and am very happy with it. In my opinion, the FB-55 is poorly made and overpriced.

Great instrument, terrible hardware.

Comments about Fender FB-55 Banjo:

I'd like to compliment who every crafted this banjo, its simply perfect in this respect. BEAUTIFUL finish, FLAWLESS neck. Now, having said that, the tuners are worthless. They are the worst tuners of any instrument I've ever had. Already ordered replacements. The bridge is terrible too, but that's not fender, that's just a banjo for you. Like so many lower end instruments, the instrument is fine, its the hardware and set up. So my recommendation is to get this and replace the tuners, buy some extra bridges (they're cheap, real cheap), and enjoy. It sounds beautiful by the way, when its occasionally in tune that is. The pictures don't do it justice, this thing is gorgeous.

Well this banjo is a very well set up instrument and sounds as good as it looks. The overall tone of it is astounding and feels lovely to play and hardly ever goes out of tune. Well done Mr Fender.

Like the instrument

Comments about Fender FB-55 Banjo:

I have had this instrument for three years. After few months, I had is set up by a smart kid at the local music shop and it whatever adjustment(s) he made to it seem to work. It stays in tune and plays well. My nephew, who plays very well and owns an anstrument of which he is very critical, always wants me to bring my Fender over so he can play it. I am very happy with the instrument. It's one of those instruments that wants to be played if anyone can relate. Tone is melodic rather than sharp which I prefer. Volume is great.

Better than I expected...

By Ben-LN7fw

Comments about Fender FB-55 Banjo:

However, I am happy with the purchase. The only problem is that it was delivered 10 minutes before I had to be at work. I should have called in sick... Alas, when I came home, I found that my instrument had arrived without any damage and I was easily able to fit the bridge and tune up. It may not sound like $5000 instrument, but it sounds like a banjo to me... bright and sparkling with a twangy bite.

Way to Go Fender

By In His Name

from Raleigh, NC

Comments about Fender FB-55 Banjo:

I can truly say that I have nothing but good things to say about the Fender FB-55. It is a well made very stylish instrument, with unsurpassed tone for the money. Unlike some of the other reviews, I can play mine for hours, put it away for several days an pick it up again and it will still be in tune. Friends I will say this, a banjo is like a delicate lady and you need to treat it as such. You have to let you hand float along the fret board. Oh and by the way for you hobbyist you need to get your bridge set and tuned and then leave it alone. Put a little pencil mark around the corners where it goes in case it falls down so you can put it back in the right place. Again, way to go Fender, thanks for a Great job and a Great Banjo.

Very Disappointed

By TCVFF

from Munford, Tennessee

Comments about Fender FB-55 Banjo:

I have the same type comments as the previous reviewer. I purchased this instrument from a local music store and from the onset, I have had trouble keeping it in tune. I have tried various gauge strings, tightening the tone ring, adjusting the bridge,,,all with no improvement. I bought it on the Fender reputation,,,which obviously is not what it used to be. I am going to try replacing the tuners as a last step. The bad thing is, when I can get this banjo to stay in tune for a song or two, it really has a nice tone. It's a shame that Fender allowed something this poor to carry its name. I would not advise anyone to purchase this instrument. Buy a Deering or spend the money and go for a Gibson.
