I got this for Christmas 2 years ago now. I picked it up and played it for a while then put it back down and then about 8 months ago I picked it back up and have stopped.Initial quality - bridge was broken and it cost another $75 to get fixed and reset.Sound - Not bad with the Fender strings. Outstanding with D'Addario J75 Strings.Playability - Have only picked on 2 different brands. A Rogue and this Fender. I would tell you that there is a definite between the 2 and I would spend the extra money on the Fender.Materials - If I knew more about instruments when I got this one, I probably would have gotten a Washburn. At least they are made of all solid woods and have the same brand name reputation as a Fender. The Book - My book did not come with a CD. So trying to teach myself without it was rather difficult. Spend the money and get the same book with the CD. It helps out tremendously knowing what the song is supposed to sound like since most songs in the book are of Bluegrass - Celtic origin. All in all I have been really happy with the Fender FM100. As a first time player of any stringed instrument, you can't go wrong with the Fender name or sound quality.

Evidence of wear that would indicate item was returned or used as a demo. Although the pick-guard had a clear protective plastic cover over it, the guard surface had multiple swirls and scratches. In addition, the guard had very loose hardware.
I'm very disappointed and less likely to purchase more instruments from Musician's Friend!

ok for the price

Ask me a question

Comments about Fender FM 100 Mandolin Pack:

The buzzing tailpiece was easy to fix once the source was found. The high action makes this mandolin not really suitable for performing for a full set or more if you perform professionally.
An ok mandolin if you want to try the instrament out before committing to an expensive one.
I got this for christmas from my thoughtful wife and I'm grateful. I play guitar and bass, performing occassionally and i always wanted to try mandolin so My wife got me this kit. The mandolin took some time to tune but seems to be holding it ok after a couple days. It had an awful buzzing but I have traced it to the tailpiece. I stuffed small pieces of felt in between the tailpiece and the G and D strings to solve that and now it's good. The action on this mandolin is too high to allow me to play this thing for more than a few songs during a performance of 3 or 4 sets. It's a decent starter mandolin and I'm happy to have it. It's pretty and has quite a bit of projection for a small instrament.
I would recommend this model for a starter. I may move up soon to a model easier to play as this one hurts. The book that came with this kit sucks. 60 pages and not one chord chart. Nice job Hal Leonard. Why sure I'd love to read 'The Black Nag' and 'Pop Goes The Weasel'. Oh wait, I don't play to kindergardeners. Here'a hint: show us how to play 'Losing My Religion'. It's 4 chords Hal/Fender. Also the Fender tuner that comes with the kit deserved to be stomped on in the driveway. At least the travel bag and strap are helpful.
It sounds good, but the action is quite high on mine. Probably to be expected though in this price range.
I'm no expert- I'm very familiar with guitars so keep that in mind. This seems decent as far as value in this price range.

Comments about Fender FM 100 Mandolin Pack:

I got this mandolin for Christmas and and it kind of sat around my room for the past few months but the in the past week I've been playing it more. I was looking at the mandolin and noticed that the bridge was bending and then finally just came off. But I'm going to try and fix it. But besides that it sounds nice and plays nice.

Great!

Comments about Fender FM 100 Mandolin Pack:

I speak in agreement with the other reviewers of this product. It's inexpensive, stays in tune, sounds great, and comes with all the right accessories. I bought this mandolin because I wanted an alternative to guitar (my primary instrument). I was impressed. The FM100 turned out to be 10 times better than I ever could have hoped.

Comments about Fender FM 100 Mandolin Pack:

I just bought this a few days ago, and I'm already impressed. I'm not a huge bluegrass fan, but I love the sound of a mandolin and decided to try it out. I just started playing, so I don't know a lot about mandolins, but I can tell that this is a very decent product. I love the tone it produces, but of course I'm sure it's nothing compared to the higher dollar ones. The tuner, strap, picks, and bag are alright and the book that comes with it is really helpful. Couldn't ask for a better deal. Thanks to Fender for another great product.

Comments about Fender FM 100 Mandolin Pack:

As a musician I find the FM 100 Mandolin to be an instrument that will quickly grow with me as my abilities progress. This instrument has a very pleasing sound. Now that my left fingers are tuff, I can enjoy this instrument even more.

Awesome starter

Comments about Fender FM 100 Mandolin Pack:

There are many starter packs to choose from. Not knowing which is best I choose the fender FM 100 pack, because of the fender name. I am glad I did. It is well built and has very good sound. This is my first string instrument and so I know how to read music. The only thing lacking is a CD with the book. I would love to hear some of the mandolin music from the book, so that I could play along.

Just not bad!

By John-jVeDl

Comments about Fender FM 100 Mandolin Pack:

I was once told that in order to get a decent mandolin, you needed to spend alot of money. Well, as musical instruments go, $179.00 is relatively inexpensive. This mandolin arrived in great condition, tuned right up, held it's tune well and sounds good. I've heard more expensive mandolins and yeah, in some cases, you get what you pay for but this is really a good deal. It is absolutely ideal for students just learning the instrument. I strongly recommend this product.
