Crafted from solid, carved spruce and maple.

This exquisite instrument looks almost too fine to play. But once you hear it, you won't want to stop. Features a solid carved spruce top, solid maple rims, and a solid carved maple back for complex and subtle tone unavailable from laminates. A lustrous, high-gloss finish enhances the scrolled F-style body. Ebony fingerboard includes distinctive inlaid patterns and a Fender signature-flared headstock tops the maple neck.

I bought the FM-63S mainly for acoustic jam sessions with bandmates and friends. I'm really just learning the mandolin, although I'm not new to music. I'm currently the bassist in a classic rock band, and I do have experience playing 6 and 12 string acoustic guitar. I have always had a desire to play mandolin (and violin), and recently purchased this model. Experienced bluegrass pickers may look over the FM-63S in favor of some of the more prominent brands, but for me, this is a very nice instrument. Mine was set up well with good action and good intonation, and although not flawless, the finish is very nice. One of my D strings is an aggravation to fine tune, but once you get it there, it, and the rest of the strings stay in tune well. I plan to put on some heavier gauge strings next change for perhaps a little better projection. Overall, this little Fender will probably be all or more than I will ever need.

I purchased this mandolin to try to learn after many years on the guitar and several purchases from Musician's Friend. I was totally disappointed in the condition after waiting 7 weeks for it to arrive. It looks like it has been played a lot and I returned it immediately. I have paid for it and now will have to wait for a refund and start all over again. The design itself is nice but I did not purchase a used instrument.

        good deal,bad finish

        Comments about Fender FM-63S Mandolin:

This is a good solid instrument and a good value. You can work with this mando. The only things I don't like about it are the slightly shorter-than-Gibson scale and the urethane(?) finish, which is too thick and really damps the sound. Somewhere inside this instru, ent I believe is an even better one. Mine is set up with heavy strings for bluegrass and it has a good "chop" and cuts through for playing lead. It isn't "throaty" and hasn't really opened up in several years of moderate use. Still, it is a great value in its price class.

        Nice instrument...I'd buy it again

        Comments about Fender FM-63S Mandolin:

I just got this mandolin a couple weeks ago from musiciansfriend.com. The only bad thing I can say about it is that the pick guard had a small blemish near where it attaches underneath the fret board. It looks like a tiny blister in the plastic and I think it came from when it was glued to the supporting hardware underneath. But it's the pick guard which is sure to take a beating anyway and is very tiny (about half the size of a pea). I spent some time holding it up to the light and looking at the glare on it for other imperfections and saw none. I had to take the strings all the way off to get my strap on it (a limitation of my strap probably), the bridge takes some time to adjust to get the intonation right, but once completed (took me about 2 hours) it sounds good. The frets didn't need to be filed or altered in any way. I've read that people prefer medium strings on this instrument but I find the lights that it comes with to be just fine. Be sure to get the case that goes with it because it is sweet and fits the thing like a glove. Overall I gave the instrument a 9, but other less particular people may have given it a 10.

        Decent Value

        By dawgystyle

        from Stillwater, OK

        Comments about Fender FM-63S Mandolin:

About what you would hope to get for the price. Solid woods used, ebony fretboard a plus. I didn't care to have "MADE IN KOREA" in such big letters behind the headstock. The headstock inlay is nice, but I was disappointed to see that the inlay on the fretboard looked to be plastic instead of mother-of-pearl like the headstock has. Wood finish is beautiful. Not a bad deal overall.

You could spend a great deal more for an instrument but the extra expense will not yield you a "great deal" better quality, playing or sounding instrument. Great value
