Everybody that I know who plays now wants one.
Gorgeous guitar. The sunburst finish is really an eye catcher, and I dig the f-holes, which are the fender "F" forward and reverse. I'm not really a fan of Fender acoustic instruments, but this is a delight. I played it for awhile with dead strings on it, and had a suspicion it would brighten up with a new set. Put some Elixers on there and it sings! Action was just a little high for me. I had a stroke which limits the strengh in my left (fretting) hand. I adjusted the nut a little and now barre chords are a cinch. This guitar has a very bright tone, even on bass notes. Good looks, good sound, easy playability. There seems to be some inconsistancy with this guitar model. It's made in China, so what do you expect? If you get the right one, you'[ve got a gem.
Appears to be well made. Tuners are of good quality. Neck is very playable. I've played resonators that are a bit twangier, but this is cool. My fifth resonator, including a brass one (I still have 3), and this is by far the best.
GREAT value. I would happily pay more than I paid for this guitar.

For some reason, this instrument is designed with a slightly arched top. This does not work with a resophonic device, which requires a perfectly flat top to work properly. To make it fit on the top it is forced down with screws, crushing the spider into the cone and slightly buckling the top cover. In forty-five years of playing and dealing guitars, I have never seen a design defect this inexplicable. What were they thinking? I've asked Fender about this with no response. Numerous other players have noted the same problem, which probably explains the really inconsistent sound these instruments have.

Fender FR50

Comments about Fender FR-50 Resonator Guitar:

About a year after i purchased thi guitar it hab a terrible encounter with a child experiencing a titantic temper. When it hit the floor two of its tuners were snapped off. No other harm done to the guitar. I purchased a new set of grover tuners and also installed a metal riser on the nut. Now I have ne a very fast playinf Dobro. It converted very well. The high tones suits it as a Dobro It has also expanded it's horizions to be eficient in any style of music I have thrown it into. I must say this is one of my best instruments in my stringed arsenal.
The bisket design seams to be unique to fender and producwes a very nicebut rather high tone; which, I am a fan of the higher tone.
Being in the low end price range I wasn't expecting a superior instrument; howeve, thie ax is of really really good quality in my book. I have found it to be extreamly durable.
Like I said low end price range I wasn't expecting a superior instrument, For money you can't go wrong even now. I bought this instument about five or six years ago. The it was around one hunderd dollars lower in price.

High quality instrument!

Comments about Fender FR-50 Resonator Guitar:

The Fender FR-50 Resonator is a high quality instrument.
You have to see the FR-50 in person to believe how beautiful the finish on this instrument is.
The action is not too high which works great for me since I don't use a slide.
It is very loud and each string rings out very clearly.
The rosewood neck is so smooth that at first, I thought it was ebony.
I also highly recommend the Travelite Resonator case for superior protection.

GOOD guitar

Comments about Fender FR-50 Resonator Guitar:

Very good instrument. I had to lower the action, but I know it's meant for slide, which I don't do much of. Otherwise, it was fine when I got it. it has a beautiful sound. I've had it for about 2 years and the finish is still perfect. It's very hardy (I've dropped it a couple of times by accident and its still fine) and I highly recommend it

Better Each Time I Play It

By DaZootman

Comments about Fender FR-50 Resonator Guitar:

I bought the Fender FR-50 Resonator from a store about 3 years ago. I was pretty satisfied with the sound but not expecting too much for the price. Since I am no longer an working musician, I really couldn't see paying a lot of money for something that I am just going to play for my own enjoyment and occasional Saturday night jam sessions. On close inspection, this is a good looking instrument. The fit and finish are spot on. The tuners are of good quality. I have not had to tweak it in any manner.I use a glass slide when I play it. This resonator sounds great all up and down the neck. I used to think that it would be better with a flat neck. Now that I know better how to play the FR-50, I would not make any changes. Overall, it is a great instrument for the money.

Gorgeous Sound

By Alex-GCnBe

Comments about Fender FR-50 Resonator Guitar:

I got this guitar a few years ago, and I am so impressed with it. First of all, it does what its name suggests. The resonance on this guitar is so long and clear, and the harmonics come out like nothing ive ever played. The neck and bridge are perfectly comfortable and set, and the tuning doesn't degrade as you go up the neck. The only flaw I found was the gloss coat. I was buffing it near the f-holes and a little piece came off. No worries really, just be careful when cleaning. The wood is quite pretty too! All in all I would completely suggest this guitar. I am at Berklee college of music, and have used it in many performances and its sound is just superb.

I have Owened a FR 50 for 6 years (a Gift from my Brother)and after a little adjusting, I have become very fond of this Guitar and its sound.I did have to rework the bridge a little and addeda differant nut and EJ-42 Strings. I play this guitar everyday almost and it has so far been great.I would say its very good for the price.

A good starting point

By Offkey in Portland

from Portland, OR

Comments about Fender FR-50 Resonator Guitar:

I liked this guitar in the store as it had a nice sweet sound, but after a few days I realized it was not the "resonator" sound I was looking for. Taking off the cover I discovered that the spider was not sitting evenly around the resonator. There is a lot of info on the net on how to fix these problems; I tried to sand the feet smooth and discovered that the center of the spider was lower than the feet-had to bend down the feet to try to level them and of course broke one in trying. I ended up buying a beard resonator, spider and saddle as well as putting on medium strings. In the process I realized that the slots had been miss filed in the original saddle and the strings had been about 1/16 inch too far toward the base side of the neck.I love the sound now, a bit rougher but definitely a reso sound. Sustain? I can stop playing, put the guitar down, walk across the room and pick up a book to read, and it is still ringing. I am not kidding. It resonates if someone sneezes in the same room. However, with all the new parts I don't know if this is a Fender review anymore. Still, as I say the guitar is nice to begin with and a great base for upgrading. And even with the new parts it cost much less than some brand name reso's that don't sound as good as this one did to start.

Wonderful with DAddario strings!

By DWelsh

from Victorville, California

Comments about Fender FR-50 Resonator Guitar:

I bought this guitar a few months ago and play it more than any of my other 8 guitars. It has beautiful resonance; it sound like an opera house when you pluck single notes and let all the strings vibrate. However when getting one of these I HIGHLY suggest you check your intonation on all strings because my low E is very slightly off. The strings it comes with sound like CRAP! So make sure you get good resonator strings. I use DAddario EJ46 gage 16 resophonic strings. So far nothing has gone wrong with it and it holds up pretty good. An A+ for the Price, a B for the craftsmanship(but Fenders craftsmanship sucks altogether).

Buy from store

By The White Slide

from Wisconsin

Comments about Fender FR-50 Resonator Guitar:

As has been suggested by another reviewer, there are some major inconsistities in this resonator. which leads to the title of my review, buy from a store. Do not order this resonator, because you may end up with a lemon pick, make sure you play and then buy one from a store, because only then will you be able to make sure that you have one that was made the way it was supposed to be. besides the a-little-too-often lemon in the bunches, when you play a good one, its pretty good. Nice entry level resonator for those of you that want the metallic twang of a blues slide resonator, but dont want to run yourself poor on one.as for the guy who complained that this was an archtop, almost all resonators are. The single cutaway design is pretty new to the resonator world. in fact, alot of resonators arent even roundneck, and have to be played lap steel style, eliminating the need for a cutaway at all.Overall, this is a great roundneck resonator for beginners in the resonator world. If youre an experienced player and are looking for a perfect one, go for the hound dog dobro.
