Gorgeous guitar. The sunburst finish is really an eye catcher, and I dig the f-holes, which are the fender "F" forward and reverse. I'm not really a fan of Fender acoustic instruments, but this is a delight. I played it for awhile with dead strings on it, and had a suspicion it would brighten up with a new set. Put some Elixers on there and it sings! Action was just a little high for me. I had a stroke which limits the strengh in my left (fretting) hand. I adjusted the nut a little and now barre chords are a cinch. This guitar has a very bright tone, even on bass notes. Good looks, good sound, easy playability. There seems to be some inconsistancy with this guitar model. It's made in China, so what do you expect? If you get the right one, you'[ve got a gem.
Appears to be well made. Tuners are of good quality. Neck is very playable. I've played resonators that are a bit twangier, but this is cool. My fifth resonator, including a brass one (I still have 3), and this is by far the best.
GREAT value. I would happily pay more than I paid for this guitar.

The finish on this resonator is the only thing that deserves any mention. For the price the finish was nice. However, the sound or lack of was weak and the overal tone was terrible. The frets were poorly finished and when playing and bending notes you get a sandpaper sound. I would not waste my time or money on this instrument. If you want a resonator and can't afford a higher end model I would save my money until I could afford one.

Better Each Time I Play It

By DaZootman

Comments about Fender FR-50 Resonator Guitar:

I bought the Fender FR-50 Resonator from a store about 3 years ago. I was pretty satisfied with the sound but not expecting too much for the price. Since I am no longer an working musician, I really couldn't see paying a lot of money for something that I am just going to play for my own enjoyment and occasional Saturday night jam sessions. On close inspection, this is a good looking instrument. The fit and finish are spot on. The tuners are of good quality. I have not had to tweak it in any manner.I use a glass slide when I play it. This resonator sounds great all up and down the neck. I used to think that it would be better with a flat neck. Now that I know better how to play the FR-50, I would not make any changes. Overall, it is a great instrument for the money.

Comments about Fender FR-50 Resonator Guitar:

The Fender FR-50 Resonator is a high quality instrument.
You have to see the FR-50 in person to believe how beautiful the finish on this instrument is.
The action is not too high which works great for me since I don't use a slide.
It is very loud and each string rings out very clearly.
The rosewood neck is so smooth that at first, I thought it was ebony.
I also highly recommend the Travelite Resonator case for superior protection.

Gorgeous Sound

Comments about Fender FR-50 Resonator Guitar:

I got this guitar a few years ago, and I am so impressed with it. First of all, it does what its name suggests. The resonance on this guitar is so long and clear, and the harmonics come out like nothing ive ever played. The neck and bridge are perfectly comfortable and set, and the tuning doesn't degrade as you go up the neck. The only flaw I found was the gloss coat. I was buffing it near the f-holes and a little piece came off. No worries really, just be careful when cleaning. The wood is quite pretty too! All in all I would completely suggest this guitar. I am at Berklee college of music, and have used it in many performances and its sound is just superb.

Buy from store

Comments about Fender FR-50 Resonator Guitar:

As has been suggested by another reviewer, there are some major inconsistities in this resonator. which leads to the title of my review, buy from a store. Do not order this resonator, because you may end up with a lemon pick, make sure you play and then buy one from a store, because only then will you be able to make sure that you have one that was made the way it was supposed to be. besides the a-little-too-often lemon in the bunches, when you play a good one, its pretty good. Nice entry level resonator for those of you that want the metallic twang of a blues slide resonator, but dont want to run yourself poor on one.as for the guy who complained that this was an archtop, almost all resonators are. The single cutaway design is pretty new to the resonator world. in fact, alot of resonators arent even roundneck, and have to be played lap steel style, eliminating the need for a cutaway at all.Overall, this is a great roundneck resonator for beginners in the resonator world. If youre an experienced player and are looking for a perfect one, go for the hound dog dobro.

GOOD guitar

By SkyeSoldier95

Comments about Fender FR-50 Resonator Guitar:

Very good instrument. I had to lower the action, but I know it's meant for slide, which I don't do much of. Otherwise, it was fine when I got it. it has a beautiful sound. I've had it for about 2 years and the finish is still perfect. It's very hardy (I've dropped it a couple of times by accident and its still fine) and I highly recommend it

Fender FR50

Comments about Fender FR-50 Resonator Guitar:

About a year after i purchased thi guitar it hab a terrible encounter with a child experiencing a titantic temper. When it hit the floor two of its tuners were snapped off. No other harm done to the guitar. I purchased a new set of grover tuners and also installed a metal riser on the nut. Now I have ne a very fast playinf Dobro. It converted very well. The high tones suits it as a Dobro It has also expanded it's horizions to be eficient in any style of music I have thrown it into. I must say this is one of my best instruments in my stringed arsenal.
The bisket design seams to be unique to fender and producwes a very nicebut rather high tone; which, I am a fan of the higher tone.
Being in the low end price range I wasn't expecting a superior instrument; howeve, thie ax is of really really good quality in my book. I have found it to be extreamly durable.
Like I said low end price range I wasn't expecting a superior instrument, For money you can't go wrong even now. I bought this instument about five or six years ago. The it was around one hunderd dollars lower in price.

Fender FR-50

Comments about Fender FR-50 Resonator Guitar:

I had the FR-50 given to me as a gift, I was in the market to by a resonator guitar. Looking at and trying major brands which cost a lot of $$$ that made me have to decide not to eat for a while so I could afford one. Yet the sound and feel of playing could not be denied. When my buddy bought the FR-50 and gave it to me as a gift I played it and to my amazement it sounded great and the feel was right up where it fit me perfectly and I can still eat too......At the price of the FR-50 you cant go wrong, just add a good pickup system and your set....eat a set of ribs too...

decent sound for the $$

By mark-tFxvd

Comments about Fender FR-50 Resonator Guitar:

I was shopping around for an acoustic guitar and came across one of these for a fair price and I thought it sounded pretty cool and seemed to be a lot louder than some of the others. and although I'm really happy with the one I have,I played a different one in another music store and it sounded really dull compared to mine, like it was being muted by something.it leads me to believe there may be some inconsistencies in the manufacturing of this model. I did replace the original micarta bridge with a maple one that sits a little bit lower and it changed the sound a little too.the innotation still sounds fine when you compare fretted notes to open ones. I also installed a piezo transducer inside the center of the cone which doesn't sound bad at all. I do think mine was a good buy.

I have Owened a FR 50 for 6 years (a Gift from my Brother)and after a little adjusting, I have become very fond of this Guitar and its sound.I did have to rework the bridge a little and addeda differant nut and EJ-42 Strings. I play this guitar everyday almost and it has so far been great.I would say its very good for the price.

Good looks, Good price, Bad sound

By GuitarHero114

from Newark, NJ

Comments about Fender FR-50 Resonator Guitar:

I bought the Fender FR-50 because I loved the sound of a resonator guitar, and wanted to try a resonator out. While the instrument has a beautiful finish, it is quite lacking in depth of sound. Also, bear in mind that this model has an arched top, making it an interesting sounding variation on an acoustic guitar, but generally worthless in terms of a resonator. I would recomend this instrument only to those who are looking for a different sound and aren't picky about quality.

Comments about Fender FR-50 Resonator Guitar:

This guitar gets a bad rep on the internet, but it just needs a little setup. stew mack site gives some good tips on how to tweak a resonator to get great tone.

Needs heavier strings for slide too, but that's easy to fix.

Comments about Fender FR-50 Resonator Guitar:

I tried the FR50 at Guitar Center several times. I was not too impressed. The sound was a little dull. I then tried the FR48 Steel body Fender reso and was blown away. Much better guitar, great tone & super volume. I added a Lace Dobro Sensor to it and this thing ROCKS! 10 starts for the FR48.

Comments about Fender FR-50 Resonator Guitar:

I've played many inexpensive guitars and they all sounded better than this dull thud of a resonator. Aside from the sound, the craftmanship was poor, the top of the guitar was forced down and the tail piece was off center. Maybe Fender should redesign this one.

Comments about Fender FR-50 Resonator Guitar:

This is the best guitar I have ever owned. This guitar sounds great and feels great to play. I adore this guitar over the past 6 I have had. The F-holes are a great feature. There is plenty of volume and a tone that provides a mellow, mid-range response.

Comments about Fender FR-50 Resonator Guitar:

Bought second hand in the UK, didn't think I'd be able to afford a resonator for a long time, so this was too good to miss. Looks perfect in black, suprisingly well put together for a non-USA Fender, great tuners, finish and action. Sounds spot-on for me and most importantly, feels just right sat on my knee.

    By Anonymous

Comments about Fender FR-50 Resonator Guitar:

I do not recommend buying this guitar. It did not sound good, it did not sound bad, it sounded HORRIBLE. Save your money and get the Gibson Hounddog, it offers a much truer Dobro (F hole) type sound than attempt by fender to make a resonator.
