Really impressed with the quality and tone of this instrument. My only regret is that I waited so long to pick one up! For an open back banjo the sound is rich and full... and the playability factor is off the charts. 5 stars all day.

Given the pretty ambitious MSRP for an open-back Chinese banjo, I was expecting a *much* better instrument than what arrived. The neck was loose and twisted, about a third of the lugs were loose, the tailpiece was mismounted, misaligned and its rim hooks cutting into the head, quite a few of the potmetal lugs were shedding their plating, very rough fretwork, etc., etc.

With the exception of the machines, the hardware quality is pretty poor. This is a unit comparable to generic banjos of similar configuration I've seen with street prices under two bills.

Comments about Fender Rustler Open Back Banjo:

I've been a guitar player for 40 years and have always thought about trying the banjo. I wanted a lightweight banjo to hang in my garage (man cave/studio) that I could grab easily that would encourage practicing. When the Fender Rustler was a SDOTD, I picked one up. Wow what a deal for a well made and nice sounding instrument. After installing and adjusting the bridge and tuning up, i was ready to start learning. Nice action and stays in tune! Keep an eye on these and grab one when they go on sale. You'll be pleasantly surprised. I gave it 5 stars cause of the great deal and "bang for the buck". I would probably have given it 4 stars had I paid the regular price.

Nice little entry level banjo. Mine required vey little setup to start playing. Has a bit of a dark tone so would be great for clawhammer but fine for practice of any style. Light and easy to play.

(stupid deal). I got this just to plunk around on. Turns out that I love it and have gotten pretty good on it. Great to learn on. Low action vibrant tone. Just a joy to play.

I'm having fun playing the banjo! I've played guitar for many years and bought the banjo on a SDOTD sale. The first one I received damaged but Musicians Friend made it easy to exchange for a new one at no cost.

Comments about Fender Rustler Open Back Banjo:

I'm a "serious" hobby guitar player, and enjoy 5-sting banjo on the side. This is my 4th 5-string banjo in about 40 years, first open back. I love this Fender. Finish is low luster which I like. Action was wonderful right out of the box. (You need to set the bridge, so bring your ear or tuner and place bridge using harmonics + frets, right!?!) The tone is even and clear and sweet on all strings and all frets. The strings seem wonderful. Don't know what they are. I like that it is lighter weight than a banjo with a back. Maybe I lucked out with this one, but I am very happy with the quality and playability of this Fender. Since getting this one a few months ago, I continued to shop (don't we all?) and have played other banjos up to 4 times the cost and vastly preferred this one Musicians Friend sent me on a SDotD. Very pleased. Fender exceeded my expectation with this one.

Comments about Fender Rustler Open Back Banjo:

Like several other reviewers, I got this banjo as a Stupid Deal of the Day. This is a great banjo, well built, nicely finished. It sounds very good and is really a pleasure to play. I had to install the bridge, tighten the head, and changed strings to a medium gauge. Couldn't be happier. Okay, the neck inlays are not MOP, but for what I paid I feel like I stole it.

My wife bought me this banjo as a Stupid Deal of the Day. As my neighbor said, "Your wife bought you a banjo? She must really love you!" I looked up proper bridge placement, did the measuring, and it seems to play very well in tune. Stays in tune too! I'm not a banjo player, but I'm having fun goofing around on it. At the price we paid, it seems like a great banjo. I agree that the MSRP seems excessive.
