According to the Musician's Friend web site, the price just went up on this, but it is still a great buy. When I first thought about buying the Gold tone PBS I knew it was a lot of value for the money. Still, I wasn't sure I was ready to take on a new instrument. With the President's Day 15% discount, I had no choice. It feels like I stole it, but I'm not giving it back. My National Duolian and my Bourgeois OM are very jealous of this new upstart in the family. I play it every day.
If you really want to play dobro, get the squareneck, not the roundneck. It is set up perfectly. Sounded great right out of the box. The tuners look good but are a bit stiff.
Arrived thoughtfully packed in a box, inside a box, inside a box. Anticipation builds as you work your way through the layers. Only shipping damage was one broken string, which took me about a minute to replace. Otherwise, it arrived actually in tune! Amazing! All the way from China. The sound is loud and clean - much sweeter than my National steel.
How can they sell this thing for so little? There are a couple of less expensive squareneck dobros on the market (I tried the Regal) - don't waste your money - no comparison. I also tried the PBS-D, deluxe version of the PBS in a guitar store and loved it, but didn't want to spend the extra bucks just for some fancier inlays and an ebony finger board. (You don't put your fingers on the finger board on a dobro, so why pay for ebony?) The PBS-D might be a bit mellower in tone, too. The PBS is pretty bright, but clean. It came with no case, so now that I know I'm going to be playing it a lot, I ordered a travelite dobro case. Hope it fits.

Neck started to separate a bit where it attaches to the sound box. It caused cracking of the lacquer at the joint. I sent it back, no problem, and I bought a second one exactly like it to see if the first one was just a fluke.

Comments about Gold Tone Beard Signature Series Resonator Guitar:

I just received this PBS model Gold Tone Square neck guitar. First off it is a very pretty instrument. Secondly the tone of the instrument is phenomenal. Harmonic notes at the 12th fret are just amazing as is the overall tone. No rattles just pure Dobro tone. I really like this guitar and believe it is a high value for what it costs. I don't like the fact that there is no truss rod however, as I have had problems with steel string instruments becoming unplayable without them in the past. The fret board / neck is not perfectly flat out of the box but that doesn't matter with a slide guitar. I just hope the neck stays as is for a long time as too much of a bow will affect the relative pitch over the frets below. As long as the guitar stays as is, I will be playing it for a long time. It sounds just great. I have not played any other brand of resophonic guitar but I have been listening to the recordings of some great players for quiet some time and the tone of this guitar is as good as anything I have heard. Just really sweet and syrupy. Beautiful. I would compare it to Jerry Douglas' tone on the Alison Kraus/Vince Gill CMT "Trying to get over you"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KfXbDH3DZwg

It sounds just great. I can't wait to get this tone onmy own recordings.

Comments about Gold Tone Beard Signature Series Resonator Guitar:

This one is almost perfect right out of the box.The only thing I had to do was change the strings and lower the action slightly.(I bought the round neck to be able to play as a standard guitar also. The action was a little high for fingers). The fit and finish is perfect. The sound is big and full. You would be hard pressed to find anything at twice the price with this big sound.I had access to quite a few quality modern and vintage reso's, but this one was better than most of them . Very good value, with this one you get MORE than you pay for!

The only mid-price Dobro choice

By Squareneck Picker

from Montana

Comments about Gold Tone Beard Signature Series Resonator Guitar:

I played a Regal squareneck before I bought this. The Gold Tone squareneck makes that thing sound like a tin whistle. To put it plainly- if you've played Dobro for any amount of time, you know who Paul Beard is. And if you know who Paul Beard is, you know his resonator cones sound exactly the way a squareneck resonator should sound-and that's exactly what's sitting in this bad boy. Absolutely the best value on a squareneck Dobro without shelling out big bucks for a Beard, Scheerhorn, or Dobro model, bar none. Its high notes can sing or shout, and its lows can hum or growl. All the tonal complexity of a much, MUCH more expensive model. These instruments are a steal- they should be selling them for much more, but they're not! Get one now and watch its value skyrocket!

The quality and feel were great for the price.
2 of 6 tuners slip a bit - not a big deal for the price. Had there been a case it would be a perfect first dobro.

Comments about Gold Tone Beard Signature Series Resonator Guitar:

Buying used sight unseen is always a risk, but apparently not so with Musician's Friend. Based on their description, I expected a badly scarred top. I was very pleasantly surprised when there was only a very small and easily repairable chip in the finish. Otherwise, this dobro is brand new. Quite happy with the condition AND the price.

Comments about Gold Tone Beard Signature Series Resonator Guitar:

Sometimes you think something is better because it costs more and is has less quality when it cost you less. Nothing could be farther from the truth with this instrument. If I played one in a store and it had no price tag I would have said it was probably worth $1500. I love it - a very balanced sound...the fit and finish is perfect...

Comments about Gold Tone Beard Signature Series Resonator Guitar:

For the price, you can't find a better instrument. It is very well made and has a great sound. A friend with a pre-war Gibson made the comment that it had better tuners than his Gibson and sounded just as good. I have found Gold Tone to make very high quality products at a very reasonable price. (I also own a Gold Tone banjo.)

Comments about Gold Tone Beard Signature Series Resonator Guitar:

A Goldtone PBS Beard Signature reso squareneck is the right one to choose. It can be loud or as soft as needed. There is pride and quality built into the guitar with a signature you can trust. It has a fine retro look & the construction will hold up to stage use indoors or out. If you want a specific sound, find out what strings and steel tone bar your favorite player uses. The PBS will handle it; the rest is up to you.
