OVERVIEW

A traditional instrument with improved volume and tone.

With a sparkling good-time sound and feel the Gretsch G9410 Broadkaster Special Banjo displays solid modern craftsmanship while authentically evoking the company's innovative banjo models of the early 20th century. It has a mahogany rim and features a Bluegrass resonator to help increase the volume when soloing in a group. The mahogany neck has a rosewood fingerboard with cross inlays for beauty and precise fingering. This Broadkaster Special Banjo is a splendid Southern surfeit of outstanding sound, performance and value for established artist, seasoned player and eager student alike.

Gretsch is proud to take players on a musical journey through nearly a century of great Gretsch history by introducing its Roots Collection of acoustic instruments. This exciting family of banjos, mandolins, resonator guitars, ukuleles and Rancher acoustic guitars feature classically authentic Gretsch designs that transport players to a bygone era well before the company made its acclaimed 1950s entry into the electric guitar world.

This is one solid banjo. On picking it up, you immediately feel the quality in the weight - much more than the inexpensive student models, and close to an old Gibson with maple rims and cast bellbrass tone ring. The difference is the relatively thick mahogany rim and rolled brass tone ring - as well as better machined metal parts all around. Great tuners, brackets, tailpiece, and all. And a nice barking resonator for bluegrass and jazz. I like the tone of the mahogany rim, neck and resonator - it gives a slightly more midrange and baritone sound to the standard tuning. It helps to separate the notes of complex chords in jazz and gives a more midrange bark in bluegrass. Mine came with the black and white pearl headstock veneer and that older Gretsch charm on a made-in-China banjo. Happy pickin'!

Comments about Gretsch Guitars G9410 Broadkaster Special Banjo:

It was unplayable out of the box.The neck angle too far back. I removed the resonator and found the coordinating rod lock nuts had not been secured. After setting the coordinating rod, head tensioning, and general once over to check all nuts and screws on the entire machine, it plays flawlessly, and sounds pretty good. This all leads me to believe that the final assembly inspection process at the factory is lacking. The fit and finish of all the parts is fine, but final assembly and test processes at the factory need improvement. I may have gotten that one out of a hundred that has a problem. It is entirely possible that 99 out of 100 are perfect. How would I know?

Comments about Gretsch Guitars G9410 Broadkaster Special Banjo:

Bought this for my girlfriend who always wanted to learn to play banjo. I'm not a banjo player, but have played guitar and bass for 30+ years semi-professionally. Initially was very pleased with the fit and finish, the neck was straight, action was reasonable (comparable to a good acoustic guitar), and I was able to set up the bridge and tune it with no trouble. After a couple of weeks I picked up the banjo to check the tuning and noticed the neck had cracked along the grain, starting at the nut running down the neck about 3"-4" on both sides. Called Musicians Friend and of course their service was great, they offered to send a replacement or simply take it back. I chose to not take the chance on the same brand, returned this banjo and have ordered a Recording King to replace it. It may just be a fluke but I've never had a neck crack on maybe two dozen guitars and basses that I've owned over the years, including everything from cheap Yamahas & Squiers all the way up to American-made Fenders.

Comments about Gretsch Guitars G9410 Broadkaster Special Banjo:

There is no way that this can be played right out of the box. Shipped without the bridge and neck needs significant adjustment. I knew this from other reviewes and took it to a professional for set up. Once complete it is a very impressive instrument. The technition was very impressed with the quality and sound when weighing the price point.

Comments about Gretsch Guitars G9410 Broadkaster Special Banjo:

Everything is solid with this banjo and I'm super happy with it as it was a Stupid Deal of the Day on MF. My only complaint is that the image of the banjo had a beautiful wooden floral inlay on the back of the resonator that wasn't a part of the actual banjo that I received. Pretty big let-down. Seems to play well though and will work for me as a learner banjo.
