I bought this sight unseen based on having played lower end Gretsch banjos and really liking the sound. I have a Deering Goodtime, but took a chance on this because of the great value offered by Musicians Friend.

Not disappointed in the least. Beautiful instrument, with nice, but not gaudy inlays. Wood tones and metal look very classy (classy and banjos... who knew?) It has 24 brackets, an arm rest, and a Whyte Ladie tone ring that really provides a wonderful sound for frailing. One of my three finger Bluegrass style playing friends played a bit with it and it sounded wonderful there as well, although it didn't blast like a resonator would. That can be good or bad, depending on your environment.

Because of the tone ring, it is quite a bit heavier than the Goodtime, but certainly nothing problematic. I picked up a Neotech Super Banjo Strap to go with it, and it is a very comfortable combo.

The tailpiece is actually on the outside of the rim, giving a long distance between the tailpiece and the bridge. That caused some unpleasant ringing from that section of the string. I used a piece of leather bootlace less than two inches long and wove it through the strings next to the tailpiece. That dampened the problematic overtones completely.

The neck is scooped. I personally prefer playing at the top of the head, but it does give you the option of a different tone.

I also had to tighten the head quite a bit to help the volume and tone. No surprise that they are shipped with less than full tension on the head and strings, and with the bridge in a bag along with a couple of adjustment tools for the neck (I wouldn't mess with it) and the head tension. There were no instructions for either, but google and youtube turns up lots of information.

It is a pretty instrument with a really nice sound. I've been playing for a year, so I'm hardly a professional, but friends who are better musicians than I have commented on the tone. Certainly one you should think about if you are looking for an intermediate quality open-back banjo at a good price.

Nice looking banjo that I am sure will sound good. Too bad there is nothing in the box showing how to insert the bridge.

Comments about Gretsch Guitars G9451 Dixie Deluxe 5-String Banjo:

Great entry level to intermediate instrument. Well built and finish is excellent. This was an "open box" Mint Condition deal which saved me enough to pay for the Neotech Super Banjo Strap. The strap deserves 5 stars also.

Don't let the low price scare you this is definitely Gretsch quality through and through.

Thanks M.F. for making this gray-haired old man happy.

Comments about Gretsch Guitars G9451 Dixie Deluxe 5-String Banjo:

I am an experienced musician, but I have only played four or five different banjos. This banjo was offered as the stupid deal, but I was very hesitant to buy it because it had no ratings or reviews. I took a risk because I figured a banjo at this cost had to be decent. I have played a few starter set banjos, goodtime, and a few others; this outshines them all. It should, for the price. I am pleased overall with the performance so far: good sound quality, high quality build, pretty standard projection for an openback. It is very heavy, especially for not having a resonator. It is a similar weight to an electric guitar, but I assume the type of wood and hardware are higher quality and a bit heavier.

Comments about Gretsch Guitars G9451 Dixie Deluxe 5-String Banjo:

This is my 1st Banjo and I couldn't be happier. I'm no stranger to the quality of Greatsch Gear as I have been playing their drums for years.
(I wanted a Banjo just for my own personal enjoyment) After doing A LOT of research I was leaning towards a 5 String Open Back. When this Banjo was listed as the "Stupid Deal of the Day"...THAT was the desiding factor.
This is a Well Built, Quality instrument! Easy to play and sounds great!

There was one minor problem with the 5th string tuning key but it was easily fixed. At the "normal" price this Banjo would be a Good Deal. For what I paid... It was a GREAT deal!!!

Comments about Gretsch Guitars G9451 Dixie Deluxe 5-String Banjo:

Never played banjo, it has good projection. There was no paperwork to set up the bridge and intonation. That issue was solved in a few minutes via youtube. There are many starter lessons on youtube for banjo. From instrument setup, picks and straps.
I was plucking within minutes and playing basic song phrases via youtube lessons.

Very nice. Looks and feels to be a high quality instrument. Heavier than I expected, but the Whyte Laydie tone ring contributes to that as well as the nice tone. Nice crisp sound and beautiful finish. Very happy with the banjo, and with Musician's Friend. I will recommend both to others.

Neck excellent; good tuners; very bright and LOUD.
Recommend replacing Remo head with Fiberskyn to improve "old-time" sound. For an open-back, feels heavy (double coordinator rods); will need a strap for comfortable playing on stage. Overall, I'm impressed with the fit, finish, and quality of this banjo. For what I paid during the Christmas sale, this banjo is great!

Comments about Gretsch Guitars G9451 Dixie Deluxe 5-String Banjo:

I write pop music, mostly rock, but I occasionally drift over into modern country music. When I record a new tune, I use guitars, keyboards and so forth but thought it would be nice to have a banjo for some of the country songs. The banjo voices on a keyboard are not very realistic and although I have never played a banjo in my life, I bought this Gretsch at a great MF blowout price and don't have much to lose. The instrument seems well made and is actually better than I expected. The tone seems pretty good and overall construction seems good. It's actually quite beautiful in fit and finish. Tuners are so-so but functional. The mfr's suggested retail price for this particular banjo isn't cheap by any means, so it would be nice if Gretsch had included some kind of gig bag or protective case. That's really my only gripe. Overall, I'm happy with the deal.

Comments about Gretsch Guitars G9451 Dixie Deluxe 5-String Banjo:

I played banjo 20 years ago, but I've never bought a new one. I'm told that all mail order banjos are shipped without a decent setup, but I was unprepared for that. I've worked on countless guitars, so it wasn't a huge challenge to figure out what went where; an hour of adjusting and tightening, and this one plays remarkably well.

If you are the least bit handy, or know a good tech, I'd recommend this model highly, with a lot of bang for the buck. The tone is bright and the neck is very comfortable. It's heavier than other open-backs I've played, but I consider that a plus. The hardware and chrome plating are lush and polished. After a couple of weeks of playing it, I'm well satisfied that I got my money's worth!

I bought this banjo to replace one that was lost in a house fire.I'm very pleased at how solid and well built the Dixie Deluxe is. the only mods I've done is a setup to my taste, and removing the arm rest because it's height is not adjustable. Fit and finish is near perfect. It's a great open back banjo for the money !

Comments about Gretsch Guitars G9451 Dixie Deluxe 5-String Banjo:

At the moment, this banjo is seriously discounted. It is very good for the cost. Being backless, is is best for frailing and old-time music. The tone ring gives it more volume than most backless banjos, but it doesn't have enough sustain to satisfy hard-core bluegrass players. Another nice feature is the planetary tuners, which help give it an authentic appearance. It also has two support rods, which you never see on banjos in this price range, and which make it ideal for adding a Fishman "rare earth" banjo pickup. The tobacco stain on the pot and the back of the neck isn't my favorite look but it IS authentic. You WILL have to set the bridge, tighten the head, and quite possibly adjust the neck. If you've never played banjo before, you might want to get a banjo-playing friend to help you with that. But that IS a characteristic of mail-order banjos, so don't take it personally. The only reason I didn't give it five stars is that I ordered a "scratch-and-dent" and it came in perfect condition except for a cracked neck. So I was able to tighten it up and play it, but I didn't want to tweak it to my playing standards and risk the thing exploding. I'm sure this was damaged in shipment BEFORE it was shipped to me, and the warehouse guys just didn't realize the risk of sending out a banjo that way. The short story is that I wasn't able to REALLY put it through its paces like I would have liked. The dealer was VERY nice about it, and it's on its way back to the store now, so no complaints about customer service or the banjo in general.

Again, for the price, I don't think you can do better, but if it was list price or even 2/3 list price, you might could do better. Hope this helps.

This is a decent entry level banjo if you get it on sale. It's built well, has a nice round tone and is very easy to play. As with a lot of imports, quality control can be hit or miss, so you might have to go thru a couple to find a good one.

I got this on a SDOTD for more than 1/2 off, so I have no complaints. If I had paid full price, I probably would have returned it and moved on to something else. Anyway, I put in a bone nut, Colby tailpiece, Waverly tuners, a Kat Eyz bridge and now this baby is worth full price.

This banjo has the good sound you'd expect from a rim with a whyte laydie tone ring. The fretting and setup were good, though the tuners needed a bit of tightening. The only drawback is an ugly dark sunburst finish on the neck. The was bought as a "stupid deal" for about half what most sites charge for it. If you can find one for about three hundred, it's a fine deal.

I bought this banjo online, sight unseen and sound unheard because of the great deal offered by Musician's Friend. I almost never do that but wanted a second banjo, so I took a chance this time and am glad I did. Solid craftsmanship. Very pretty wood, inlays binding and hardware. Great tone and feel. Not one complaint. Worth more than every penny. It's easy to put the bridge on. Go on line to find out how to measure where it goes. A case was not included. You'll want to get a case for it. I play acoustic guitar and thought a banjo might be fun so I was going to buy a cheap brand. The quality of this banjo, is fantastic. Great solid, very solid built, very nice looking. The Inlay is really well done -- I do inlay on guitars and that was one of the first things I looked at.

I am a guitar player that wants to learn to frail. I am glad I did not go with a resonator style. They are too heavy and too loud for me. This banjo is plenty loud and has a pleasing tone. I learned from another review that some unwanted ringing comes from the long span between the bridge and the tail piece. This is easily muted with pliable material woven between the strings, without touching the head. Thanks to the reviewer that recommended that.

Even though this is the first open back banjo I own, compared to what I have seen in music stores over the years, it knocks all of them out of the park. It is by far the best sounding easiest action banjo I have seen and played so far. The tone ring, the maple walnut neck, the tuning keys, the maple basket, the hardware all of them are built top notch and you won't be disappointed with this banjo.

I love this banjo. Bought it on sale here at MF and haven't put it down since it came. Needed a good setup, but it's a blast to play. Open back design makes it useful for playing at home without being too loud. The maple neck and sunburst finish is really nice and I love the size of the neck. The tuners are inexpensive, and the lack of a tailpiece cover means the string winds keep catching my clothing. But otherwise it's really a fun instrument to play.
