OVERVIEW

Traditional nickel-plated brass body design with modern construction.

The Gretsch G9201 Honeydipper Metal Resonator marks the return of resonators to the Gretsch family. It has a round neck that's perfect for blues-based music such as Mississippi Delta blues, country blues or even ragtime blues. The G9201 features a nickel-plated brass body with traditional-style F holes. The heart of this richly resounding guitar is the Gretsch Ampli-Sonic resonator cone, hand-spun in Eastern Europe from nearly 99-percent pure aluminum for fantastic volume and sonic projection.

Gretsch is proud to take players on a musical journey through nearly a century of great Gretsch history by introducing its Roots Collection of acoustic instruments. This exciting family of banjos, mandolins, resonator guitars, ukuleles and Rancher acoustic guitars feature classically authentic Gretsch designs that transport players to a bygone era well before the company made its acclaimed 1950s entry into the electric guitar world.

I'm an avid bass player and always had a love of delta blues. After spending years tossing the idea around of getting a resonator I finally treated myself.
First off, the factory setup is nearly perfect which came as a huge relief as I've read it can be somewhat complex to properly set up a resonator. The sound is absolutely huge, almost to a detriment because it is hard to sing over the guitar when you are really digging in. The "v" profile on the back of the neck feels amazing and, as a bass player, the nice wide string spacing is a definite plus. It's just a hair more narrow then most classical guitar. Last, but not least, the sound is incredible for that great delta tone. I found it very frustrating trying to mimic the tone of Son House, Bukka White, and Charlie Patton on an accoustic but just 30 seconds in to playing "Down the dirt road blues" i had to laugh becuase i loved the swampy tone so much.
Do yourself a favor and get this guitar...

Mine showed up yesterday unplayable right out of the box. :( Sweet looking guitar, but of no use if it can't be played. I've ordered at least 5 guitars online shipped to my house in the past from Musicians Friend and this is the 1st I've had to send back. The bridge under the hand rest appears to be slanted towards the Low E, A, D strings causing those strings to lay flat on the fret board rendering it unplayable. According to some online forums there are some people receiving these with the exact same issue which they attribute to a damaged cone. What is unnerving is there are some that mention they send the 1st back and the replacement has the exact same issue. Musicians Friend is sending me a replacement. I'm keeping my fingers crossed. I will add an updated review upon receiving the replacement.

Comments about Gretsch Guitars Root Series G9201 Honeydipper Metal Round Neck Resonator:

This gem of a guitar will have you packing up your suit-case, runnin' down to the station... and catchin' that ol' fastest mail train you see.

I absolutely love this resonator guitar and am flooded with compliments each time I pull it out. I play in open tunings (G, E, or D) and ocassionally in standard with a bottleneck or chrome slide. When performing with this baby at shows, jaws just hit the floor and it's as if you're taken back to a juke-joint in the 1930's Mississippi Delta.

This resonator is not for your average guitar picker but for your true down to the roots bluesmen.

Comments about Gretsch Guitars Root Series G9201 Honeydipper Metal Round Neck Resonator:

Still pretty new, but so far I like the construction, feel, and playability of the Gretsch steel box. Particularly, I like the old-time blues sound you get with it. Some folks say it's too "tinny" for their taste, but it sounds just right to my ear. Sounds like the boxes used on the vintage blues records by innumerable artists. Sounds good straight and takes the slide beautifully -both glass and metal.

Comments about Gretsch Guitars Root Series G9201 Honeydipper Metal Round Neck Resonator:

The attention to quality and detail really amazed me. Was going to save for another National, but got a Honey dipper and an alligator instead. Any sound difference or quality difference doesn't justify the price difference to me. I've owned 4 Nationals and presently own 3. Kinda wish Gretsch would introduce a square-neck biscuit cone. Also noticed one reviewer compared these with a tri-cone. Kind of like apples and oranges. Tri-cones are not better or worse, just different.

Comments about Gretsch Guitars Root Series G9201 Honeydipper Metal Round Neck Resonator:

I've played resonator guitars and know to look for one that rings -- after all, they are constructed from bell brass with the nickel plating! This one did not have much sustain or ring. It looked great, was solidly built -- but maybe I got a dud. Anyway, found a Republic tri-cone that meets my requirements -- so this Gretsch was returned.

Comments about Gretsch Guitars Root Series G9201 Honeydipper Metal Round Neck Resonator:

Wanted to like this guitar. It has the right look and weight (its heavy) but for me it lacked a real sense of presence. Its tone was either really loud or weak. Slide playing seemed to require more muscle than finesse and so it wasnt the right guitar for me. Pretty amazing build quality for the price though. The one feature I really wish it had is an adjustable bridge or saddle for the action was low for my tastes and adjustment was not easy. And so it went back...

While I have a nifty collection of guitars, this is my first resonator. I've never played a National or anything super expensive, so my opinion is based on comparisons to budget resonators. This thing looks and sounds really nice. I've been getting into blues in open tunings and having a real gas with this. Words can't describe it. Go to a store that has one and check it out. That's all I can knowledgeably say is that I love this. And what a great value using their 15% off discount.

Very happy!!!!

Mine was playable right out of the box. Set up perfect. I couldn't believe how heavy it was compared to my Gretsch Bobtail. (not that it's a bad thing) The action is a bit higher than I'm used to for regular playing, but the option of working on my bottle neck playing is well worth it. The harder you play it... the better it sounds! I also like the fact that it's not a high polished shine. It looks as cool as it sounds!

My first review I scored this guitar low because it was unplayable out of the box. I received a replacement and this one plays beautifully. The action is perfect and the sound is amazing. I owned a Johnson resonator guitar a while back. The neck snapped off and after gluing it back on it was playable but just never played the same. The Honeydipper is a much better instrument all the way around. Love this guitar.

I have been looking for that perfect blues tone on a budget for a while now. This is it. Sounds great in open tuning. Intonation probably not perfect but for a biscuit reso this thing projects well, was set up perfect for slide & fingering work and has incredible sustain. Does everything I wanted at a great price. I have played several Gretsch reso's and they outperform everything that's even close in price.

Comments about Gretsch Guitars Root Series G9201 Honeydipper Metal Round Neck Resonator:

Took acoustic fingerstyle lessons for a few years and played in a few ensembles. Last year I started on slide guitar. You can read my slide reviews elsewhere on MF. Well I wanted to go Resonator and this fit the bill. I compared it to high end ones and there is more a difference in "bling" than quality. For an active student and amateur performer this is a wonderful guitar. Great tone. Nice Frets. Sturdy soft V neck. Wide Nut for fingerstyle or slide playing. Very loud for an acoustic. The cone is great. For the price there is nothing to complain about. If I had to I'd say a matching case would nice - with faux gator skin. I am currently using a classical guitar padded gig bag and it fits like it was made for it.

Comments about Gretsch Guitars Root Series G9201 Honeydipper Metal Round Neck Resonator:

I read the reviews saying this guitar is loud and that's what I wanted. It's definitely loud. The cone really picks up any vibration on the strings, including light touches. I'm having to work on my muting to make it sound good. The setup out of the box was very good and needed no tweaking, I'm enjoying adding this new sound to my options.

Impressed with the resonator. Despite shipping it was still in tune!
