Gretsch Guitars

Traditional mahogany design with modern construction and components perfect for bluegrass.

The Gretsch G9210 Boxcar Resonator marks the return of resonators to the Gretsch family. It has the square neck that's preferable for bluegrass. A round-neck version, which is better for blues-based music, is also available (please see model G9200, our sku# H80534). The G9210 features a beautiful mahogany body with traditional-style F holes. The heart of this richly resounding guitar is the Gretsch Ampli-Sonic resonator cone, hand-spun in Eastern Europe from nearly 99-percent pure aluminum for fantastic volume and sonic projection.

Gretsch is proud to take players on a musical journey through nearly a century of great Gretsch history by introducing its Roots Collection of acoustic instruments. This exciting family of banjos, mandolins, resonator guitars, ukuleles and Rancher acoustic guitars feature classically authentic Gretsch designs that transport players to a bygone era well before the company made its acclaimed 1950s entry into the electric guitar world.

Comments about Gretsch Guitars Root Series G9210 Boxcar Square Neck Resonator:

While I have not played every resonator in this price range, comparing the Gretsch to most others simply shows how much value is in the Gretsch. This is a budget model, though the budget should be affordable by most. I've had more compliments on the looks and sound of this guitar than any other I've owned. The tail piece is not fancy and the coverplate will stain over time from body oils. These are cosmetic issues and easily replaced. Or, you can say the guitar will show the love you have put into it. And you will love this resonator! No need to feel as if you have a budget guitar when you walk on stage with the Gretsch. This resonator was designed and built to compete with far more expensive models. Off shore construction but you'd never know it to look at the Boxcar. Short on bling and long on solid construction and sound quality makes for a great value in this price range and even above for the serious player on a budget.

Change to John Pearse #3000 strings for an instant upgrade. With the OEM strings the Gretsch is a nice value priced guitar. With the JP strings, this is just flat a fabulous guitar at a ridiculously low price. Woody, warm, and loud when picked hard the JP/Gretsch combo have a roundness and a bloom to each picked, slid, hammered-to or pulled-off note with gobs and gobs of sustain. Great dynamics! Very sweet when desired. Can get raucous when needed.

The OEM cone and spider are exceptional at this price. Most of the sound of a resonator comes from these parts and Gretsch has done a very good job with them. You can upgrade to the Boxcar to a more expensive (USA made) set though the stock parts are so good, you'll question the diminishing returns of spending more. Out-of-the-box set up is quite good and the guitar can be played as is without concern. Response from Fender/Gretsch to questions regarding tuning and strings has been prompt and helpful. I really doubt I'll need to use the lifetime warranty, this guitar seems solidly built to last.

If you're not prepared to spend big on a resonator and you want a wooden body and a spider bridge, this is THE resonator to buy and use and love. Pick up the JP strings when you order.

Comments about Gretsch Guitars Root Series G9210 Boxcar Square Neck Resonator:

Bought this Resonator used. Got a nice price and it was delivered with no flaws. Tone is great and the guitar plays just fine. Stays in tune, good intonation and nice looking too. Be sure you get a slide with a decent weight and a little bit of a nose at end for single notes, pull offs and hammers.

Ok, it has settled in and I love this reso!
I was overly critical before. The fit and finish is great for this price. It holds tune well plays great and sounds awesome. I would say for the money you can't buy one better. If you are in the market for this price range buy it!!

Comments about Gretsch Guitars Root Series G9210 Boxcar Square Neck Resonator:

This is my first resonator. I was hesitant to buy since it's brand new to the market and there weren't many reviews. I just received it yesterday and I like. It sounds really good for the price range. The fit and finish could be better but for the money you can't expect a National. Now I have to learn to play it.
