OVERVIEW

The Gretsch G9220 Bobtail Acoustic/Electric Resonator marks the return of resonators to the Gretsch family. It has the round neck that's preferable for blues-based music such as Mississippi Delta blues, country blues or even ragtime blues. A square neck version, which is used for bluegrass, is also available (please see model G9230, our sku# H80551). The G9220 features a beautifully-bound mahogany body with traditional-style F holes. The heart of this richly resounding guitar is the Gretsch Ampli-Sonic resonator cone, hand-spun in Eastern Europe from nearly 99-percent pure aluminum for fantastic volume and sonic projection. The onboard Fishman Nashville pickup features a split saddle piezo-ceramic pickup designed specifically for spider-style bridges and offers consistent, accurate sound reproduction for every performance.

Gretsch is proud to take players on a musical journey through nearly a century of great Gretsch history by introducing its Roots Collection of acoustic instruments. This exciting family of banjos, mandolins, resonator guitars, ukuleles and Rancher acoustic guitars feature classically authentic Gretsch designs that transport players to a bygone era well before the company made its acclaimed 1950s entry into the electric guitar world.

Case sold separately.

Comments about Gretsch Guitars Root Series G9220 Bobtail Round Neck Acoustic/Electric Resonator:

Returned 2 guitars and finally have one worth keeping. First guitar was unplayable on the first fret. Bad nut and first fret. Didn't try it through an amp as it was not even close to being in playing condition.

Second guitar was playable but the pickup was weak at the 4th and 5th strings. Contacted Fishman and they said it was most likely a bad pickup. The other strings sounded great through an amp. The setup/intonation was very poor but fixable.

The 3rd guitar has good intonation, great sounding/functioning pickup. Finish on all guitars received has been basic but good. No gaps, cracks, drips etc. The 3rd guitar arrived with a deep scratch in the metal resonator cover. Will need to file it down as it catches cloth sleeves and cleaning cloths. Not a huge deal and not worth sending back. The third guitar sounds very good and to me is worth the money (on sale). If you get one that needs a setup to make it playable and can't do it yourself it will cost another 85.00-100.00 to get it in playable condition (in this area).

Comments about Gretsch Guitars Root Series G9220 Bobtail Round Neck Acoustic/Electric Resonator:

I am consistently amazed by this Chinese made guitar. I own a number of higher end American products (LP, Strat, Tele, etc) and some great Japanese guitars (Gretsch 6120TM). The quality and sound of this resonator is awesome for the price. Sounds great both unplugged and through an amp. Intonation could not be better. You won't go wrong with this choice. Highly recommended.

Comments about Gretsch Guitars Root Series G9220 Bobtail Round Neck Acoustic/Electric Resonator:

My wife got me this guitar for Christmas. Having a passion for playing a variety of music this guitar fit the need to add a resonator to my collection. She has a great feel and tone right out of the box. She plays excellent through any of my tube amps, but I have to throttle back on the volume on the amp. There are no control knobs on the guitar so caution must be used when setting up to play through an amp. She records excellent with the equipped pick up. If you are searching for a good resonator guitar with a round neck take this one for a test drive.

            I Won't Buy from Musician's Friend Again

Comments about Gretsch Guitars Root Series G9220 Bobtail Round Neck Acoustic/Electric Resonator:

This is the first and last time I will buy from Musician's Friend. I purchased this guitar at the start of August, and I just received it a week or two ago (mid-September). It wasn't until after I placed the order that I was told the guitar was on backorder, and it wouldn't be available for several weeks. After several weeks, I called MF to ask about my order. They said that the shipment had just arrived, and it would take a few days to process everything. I called a few days later and was told that this backorder shipment did not include me, as others were on the list first. Anyway, the guitar was received, and I immediately had to bring it to my guitar tech, as the neck was pretty badly bowed. Furthermore, the cone buzzes in a few places. And to top everything off, I had to call just now to have my two-day delivery charge refunded, when I was told weeks ago that I would not be charged. For some situations like this, I can imagine this being an isolated incident, resulting from coincidental bad luck. But I kind of get the impression that this is par for the course with Musician's Friend.

Comments about Gretsch Guitars Root Series G9220 Bobtail Round Neck Acoustic/Electric Resonator:

I am impressed with this little resonator. I also own a Regal RD-40 so this is more a comparison. The short scale gives this a nice tone that is a bit more for slide only than the Regal which is a 14 fret to the body. It comes with very light strings, which are more suited to picking vs. slide. I put on a set of Curt Mangan customs (check out his website), which are 16 18p 26W 36 46 56. This resonator is so sweet with heavier gauge strings it defies description. I have it tuned D A D F# A D which seems to suit this resonator. It has excellent harmonics and some very subtle overtones in this tuning. Seems to lose a bit (but is still excellent) tuned to a G or C. This is a keeper. I have actually played a lick that just raised hair on my neck and brought out some maniacal laughter...... this is what life is all about... and if someone tells you different they're just flipping lying. Get one.

Comments about Gretsch Guitars Root Series G9220 Bobtail Round Neck Acoustic/Electric Resonator:

I have been wanting an acoustic/electric resonator for gigging and this guitar hits the nail on the head. It's light weight, with a V shape to the back of the neck and a nasal (in a good way) reso tone. But what makes it an excellent acoustic/electric is the Fishman Nashville pickup. The saddle pickup does a great job volume wise through my Crate Gunnison acoustic amp without a preamp. But the real magic is when you combine this pickup with a Fishman Jerry Douglas Aura pedal. With the pedal, it's easy to dial in an amplified tone that matches the natural acoustic tone of the resonator. The Aura pedal will work with a round neck or square neck reso equipped with the Nashville pickup. I am really happy with this set up! By the way, the Jerry Douglas Aura has 16 presets that model various top of the line mics. It is one fantastic imaging pedal for a resonator and for me, the perfect match for the Gretsch Bobtail.

My wife surprised me with this guitar as an early Christmas present. I have to say that I was extremely impressed with it from the moment I picked it up. The tone and playability far exceed other resonators on the market in this price range. As an added plus, the smaller body size makes this guitar user friendly for all.

Comments about Gretsch Guitars Root Series G9220 Bobtail Round Neck Acoustic/Electric Resonator:

Been searching for a good round-neck resonator for over a year now. Based on a friend of mine getting one of these and raving about it, I went for this one, too. I'm very pleased that I did. MF shipped it quickly and it arrived safely. The only setup I had to do out of the box was wipe it down and tune it up. This little guitar has a BIG acoustic, unplugged sound and the pick-up does an excellent job of getting the resonator sound out there. The wood body gives the bass strings warmth and the resonator cone makes the trebles shiny and bright. IMHO, you will not find a better quality, better sounding resonator than this for the price.
