Surprisingly good sound and build quality, definitely not just a toy. It's easy to overblow this (and many other) whistles of this type, so take it easy. A tiny, tiny bit of very light lube (like clarinet bore oil or similar) might be necessary to get the slide and piston working just right. Fortunately, the far end can screw off to do just that. Ours was pretty good right out of the box, though. The pitch is right in the vocal range which is handy for either music or sound effects. meaning that it will sit well in a mix. Very controllable too.

This whistle is worse sounding than the cheap plastic one I purchased. It looks and feels great, but I did not buy it to put down on the coffee table. It has a small range in the middle, but the higher notes and lower ones are not clear. The slide does not work smoothly, which makes it very difficult to land the right note. I am very disappointed in the whistle. With my cheap whistle I can play pretty well, but with this one everything is a challenge. No, I would not buy it again!

    Comments about Grover-Trophy Slide Whistle:

It came in one week and looked impresssive out of the box, but the action catches so that it is difficult to play songs on it. I put lots of valve oil in it, but it did not solve the problem. It cost so little that I am not bothering to send it back.

    Comments about Grover-Trophy Slide Whistle:

These flutes do not speak well in the low end. You can sometimes get the lowest note by sliding down to it, but if you try to start on it, you either get overtones or airy noise.

    I recommend it anyway.
This is a solidly constructed slide whistle. The lower tones sound great, but the higher register sounds breathy.

    Comments about Grover-Trophy Slide Whistle:

Although this is a staple for any sound effects engineer, it's also quite useful for playing melodies. It sounds quite a bit better than a cheap plastic whistle, and has a very professional appearance due to the all-metal construction. It's also very reasonably priced. Buy it.

    Grover-trophy slide whistle

    By Lindiann Gamber

    Comments about Grover-Trophy Slide Whistle:

Inexpensive, easy to use and "play" with.
I bought this whistle as a request from my 38-yr-old, married-with-two-toddlers son. He loves "toys" and this absolutely fit the bill. The price is right, and amount of fun it he had with it (and will continue to have with the two kiddos for years to come) made it a perfect stocking stuffer. I only wish I'd bought one for each of the guys in the family. Prolly will next year. It has a pretty sound, not cheap or tinny. I highly recommend this instrument for an inexpensive gift for adults and kids alike. It would also be a good present for a child to take to a birthday party. It's a unique present that a child would have for years. Good to keep one on hand when you don't have time to go to the store and buy a child a present to take
Great value for fun and something that will last

This is an excellent quality slide whistle. I just got it in the mail today and I already started playing around. Fun, sounds great, works very well and seems extremely durable. I need to buy some lubricant for the slide though, as it sticks sometimes when I stop.

I wished I had read more reviews of this common problem. It sticks! And you can't easily take it apart to check whats up with it. The baffle sticks to the sides and is terrible to find a note.

I may force the cap off and try and see whats up with the baffle to lubricate and free it up.
                      Not worth sending it back.

By comparison, a cheapo plastic slide whistle is smooth and easy to play.

The slide does not move smoothly, so it hangs up slightly in the tube, and when you exert a bit of effort to move it again, you slide past your note. Another purchaser mentioned they had tried slide oil, to no avail, which was going to be my next option. It is only slightly too snug, so I keep thinking that if it slide it back and forth repeatedly it should loosen up...so far not the case!

This whistle doesn't have an actual fipple. The tube has been crimped & bent to approximate one. The result is both terrible sound & a very limited range. The slide has an overall travel of 9 - 1/4 inches. There's only about 3-4 usable inches of travel in the center of the range. The bottom 3 - 4 inches are only usable as an overblow that has a thin, scratchy sound. The upper two inches just sound like steam escaping from a radiator. The overall tone quality is dull & lifeless. In all honesty, I've gotten better tone & range with the two buck plastic slide whistles. The slide is a bit sticky as well. Re-lubing it with a quality lubricant may correct that, but given the overall cheap construction, It's not worth the effort to try. I'd send this back but the return postage is just throwing good money after bad.

I'd gladly pay more money for a slide whistle of decent quality. If anyone knows where to get one, please tell me!
