Having played 10-hole diatonics all of my life, I just recently got interested in tremolo harmonicas. Most of them are rather expensive, and I never felt compelled to try them. Then I bought a used double-sided Hohner echo, and became fascinated with the tone and the way it sounds when playing folk music. But it won't fit in my harmonica rack which I use when playing guitar, because of its shape. So I thought that I would try the Celeste, after reading good reviews. I was impressed that it was solo tuned, and available in different keys. Normally I won't buy instruments made in China, but I'm glad that I did. The tone is beautiful, and the design makes it easy to take apart for repairs and cleaning. I plan to buy more, to use for certain songs that I play that would benefit from its unique effect. The only faults that I could find on my Celeste were two notes that were not quite tuned as accurately as the others, and a plastic comb that has a slight curvature (you really have to look to notice it). I would recommend this to anyone interested in trying a different type of harmonica that adds an interesting sound to the right song. It will be money well spent, and it's fun to play, with a sweet sound.

I am very disappointed with the Celeste. The 1st hole of the middle octave is very weak. This harp takes a lot of breath to play. Since I have no clue as to how to adjust reeds, I'll just have to live with it and maybe later as I become a better tremolo player the Celeste will suddenly become a better harp.

Comments about Hohner 455 Echo Celeste Tremolo Harmonica:

I am primarily a guitarists who also plays blues harp player, using both the original Hohner Marine Band (wooden comb) and Marine Band Special 20 (plastic comb) harmonicas. Most harp players agree that the quality of the German made MB instruments is legendary. However, opinions are mixed regarding the Chinese Hohners Some of the negative reviews are well deserved.

I saw a demonstration of a tremolo harmonica (a different brand) on YouTube and decided that I had to own at least one tremolo harp. I bought an Echo Celeste (tuned in C) because the price was reasonable and it had a neoprene case.

I am impressed by the quality construction and great sound of the harmonica. Although made in China instead of Germany, the Echo Celeste is well built and has a nice solid feel. The tone is heavenly, with sufficient volume to be heard with other instruments.

There is a learning curve involved in playing a 20 hole harp, but it doesn't take much practice to get a good sound out of the instrument. Always remember that you cannot honk on a tremolo harmonica the way you play a blues harp. It must be blown gently and evenly, otherwise you could damage the reeds. The Echo Celeste is designed to sound somewhat like an accordion and it does that job well.

All things considered, the Echo Celeste is one of the best Hohner purchases you can make. Like many who have reviewed various Chinese Hohners on this web site, I am not a big fan of mass-manufactured Chinese musical instruments. However, I think the Echo Celeste is a worthwhile addition to my modest harmonica collection. I liked the C tuned model so much that I also purchased G and D models to fill out the set.

Comments about Hohner 455 Echo Celeste Tremolo Harmonica:

Others have commented about the outstanding wet tremolo as well as the great price. Very important with this harp is that it's solo/scale tuned (like a chromatic) and not the Richter scale of a 10-holer. Most of the other Hohner tremolo harps use a modified Richter tuning and don't have a full scale on the bottom.

The advantage is that you get full range of every note in the scale so next time you reach down for that low A (in C) [the vi or la] and can't get it because it's not there on a 10-hole, you'll find it on these. No more jumping octaves to play around the 6th. It's also outstanding for finding other modal scales if you happen to be that sort of player.

It's best suited for melody and tune playing and not so hot for blues harp style chord vamping.

Folks coming from other instruments will find this scale makes a bit more logical sense than the Richter scale 10-holers. It's also a good transition to the chromatic if you're inclined to lean toward those.

Folks coming from the 10-hole or from other Hohner tremolos and octaves will want to be aware of the different scale these offer.

Awesome harp and truly outstanding considering the price.

Comments about Hohner 455 Echo Celeste Tremolo Harmonica:

The Hohner Echo Celeste is a great harmonica for the price. I play in 2 jams a week--about 5 hours.
They sound good, play good, look good. However I have a big problem with with the midrange reeds.
They tend to go flat quickly and so far I have been unable to fix that problem. Cleaning does not help.
I have about 25 of these harps in all keys, right now 6 of them are not playable due to bad reeds in the 4-5-6-7 blow - draw holes. I wish someone could solve this problem as I keep buying these things.

        Echo Celeste harps

Comments about Hohner 455 Echo Celeste Tremolo Harmonica:

These harps provide a viable alternative to the rather more expensive double-sided Echo harps. They play easily and sound good, although the "tremolo" is not as pronounced as in the other ones (meaning that the two sets of reeds are somewhat closer in tuning). I now have six of these, covering all keys from Bb to A (in fifths).

Comments about Hohner 455 Echo Celeste Tremolo Harmonica:

When I was elementary 2nd grader (1958) I have started blowing harmonica and have many different keys with major minor. Most harmonicas has been disappeared and the fashion in the harmonica activity, except only few holes product with few professionals. Last September 2010, I have started looking and found the below $20.00 price in D-major really have brought to me the most beautiful sound I have made long time ago. I am really appreciated with the effort of the company, "Honor Echo Celeste" making revival to the dignity of Harmonica. I want to help this company, if they want to develop in the metallurgical area to have low cost with good/excellent sound/quality for the music lovers like me.

They are airtight, very responsive, and they feel nice and weighty in your hands. The sound is a celestial choral effect. Often reminds me of an accordian or bagpipe. Definately a different sound than the standard diataonics. These harps are a great deal for the money. I bought two, C & G, and I'm veryhappy with my purchase.

Comments about Hohner 455 Echo Celeste Tremolo Harmonica:

Got it today, my second Echo model and this one has a wider range than the first that cost more. This one is heavier, feeling more to a harmomica size. It is prettier, but to keep it that way, I will need my silk polishing cloth like I use to clean my glasses. Sounds great. I'm going to get one in the key of G because of the broader range. G is usually too high, but with this range, it spreads further.

Comments about Hohner 455 Echo Celeste Tremolo Harmonica:

I have a handful of these. I think they work very well for straight harp, especially in the middle octave range. I also think that they (especially F, Eb...still need to try a D and a E) could work well as a backup harp for a low-tuned harp: IF you use your low harp for straight harp. So: bottom-line, I expect to buy a few more.

        Good, Not Great.

Comments about Hohner 455 Echo Celeste Tremolo Harmonica:

The Hohner Echo Celeste is good harmonica, but for the price I expected a little more. The sound is good--not excellent(professional-quality)as I thought it would be and it tends to squeak when playing single-note melodies, so it is not very air-tight. This harmonica is good for playing chords and the peculiar(and beautiful)tremolo effect gives it a celestial sound. Good harmonica for a beginner or if you are just curious about tremolo harmonicas, but if you are an intermediate or advance player I recommend you check out some higher-quality models.

        Excellent starter harmonica, great tone

Comments about Hohner 455 Echo Celeste Tremolo Harmonica:

I've been a musician for about eight years and have only messed with my friends' harmonicas. I bought this instrument because of its reviews and its great price. Well, it came and I could not be more pleased. As many people have said, the tone is great. It's bright and very much in tune. I got the model in E major, and when I inhale the holes are tuned to F#m6, so it allows some really interesting textures for skilled players. After only 24 hours of owning this thing, I highly recommend it for anyone wanting to learn this instrument or to add an interesting tone to their musical arsenal.

Comments about Hohner 455 Echo Celeste Tremolo Harmonica:

I just purchased the Echo Celeste in the key of G. It's a pretty hefty harp, as evidenced by the picture. The sound of it is full and vibrant. The vibrato effect makes a very organic modulation sound that creates a shimmering effect, and the comparison of the Echo Celeste to a 12-string guitar is actually quite accurate. Considering the two pairs of reeds ("courses" if you like) the comparison is both physically and aurally accurate.

        455 ECHO Tremulo

Comments about Hohner 455 Echo Celeste Tremolo Harmonica:

This is the third time I have ordered this exact harmonica. Sound and performance are beautiful with congregational singing at my Chuirch. (Church of the Nazarene). The previous two 455's both broke the "blow 7" reed and I can't figure out why. In spite of this, this is a fantastic product and a delightful price.I recommend it for group and solo singing.

Comments about Hohner 455 Echo Celeste Tremolo Harmonica:

From the middle of the second octave and higher the reeds are screechy and have very little tremolo. The harmonica, for its quality is priced fairly, but the Swan double sided (C&G) is a better buy.

Comments about Hohner 455 Echo Celeste Tremolo Harmonica:

I suppose I shouldn't complain, considering the price, but, with Hohner having these made in China, the quality control is not what it should be. I have these harps in six keys. I've experienced many reed failures, and have had to learn individual reed replacement techniques, as Hohner does not do that any longer.
