OVERVIEW

A traditional blues harp that's specially made for 2nd-position note bending, which gives the blues its signature sound.

The Hohner 532 Blues Harp Harmonica helps you dig in deep and experience the raw power and grit of the blues. The Blues Harp is engineered for consistent volume and tone that's ideal for intense blues playing. The Hohner Blues Harp can hang with the toughest harmonica players on their most serious gigs. The Blues Harp is highly bendable and has a dirty, dark, hard rockin' sound. One of Hohner's classic models, the 532 Blues Harp is emphasizes the best qualities of blues harmonica playing. Hohner builds the Blues Harp with a wood comb and thin reeds, allowing for easier note bending. Musicians like Steven Tyler of Aerosmith and Lil' Ronnie Owens of the Grand Dukes have favored the Hohner Blues Harp for its power and bluesy tone.

About MS-Series harmonicas:
The acronym 'MS' stands for Modular System, an integrated concept of Hohner's harmonica designs. MS-series harmonicas benefit from innovations that improve their playing characteristics and also significantly facilitate maintenance and handling. All MS-series parts (combs, reed plates, and covers) can be combined individually. Simple screw connections allow for easy assembly. This benefit offers players the possibility to adjust the instruments to their individual requirements. For example, some players prefer the body of one model and the cover plates of another, and so a "custom hybrid" is possible for the discerning player. Replacement reeds are available (see item: RP565 MS Replacement Reed Plates).

About Hohner:
Hohner is a family company founded in 1857 in Trossingen, Germany by Matthias Hohner. Hand-made quality and close attention to detail has set Hohner apart from the beginning. A top leading brand in harmonicas, Hohner harps are distributed worldwide. Hohner harmonicas are played on the street by buskers, in intimate nightclubs, on festival stages, and even in Carnegie Hall. Despite a diverse harmonica line used in music from country to classical genres, the most famous Hohner harmonicas are their simple, 10-hole diatonics used frequently by blues, rock, country, and folk musicians.

I recently started playing Harp buying a 5 pack of these with the case.

I also purchased a bunch of
- Marine band (Natural Minor)
- Lee Oscar (s) (Diatonic and Natural Minor)
- one Souls' voice (looks and sound like a Lee Oscar)
- one Seydel Blues Solist Pro. Best comfort, purest sound, poor bender.

Did not try Hering 1923 Vintage Harp yet, but soon.

Even though all non-Hohner have a purer sound and are more comfortable to play especialy the Seydel, the Hohners Blues Harp Ms and Marine Bands have a harsher sound, more squeeling, but still quite warm, which is more appropriate for rock and blues.

It seems it is built to reflect more waves back into the comb which creates this specific sound coloration.

Also the Blues Harp MS bends much efficiently then all others I own. Note my Manine Bands are Natural Minor, so I cannot evaluate bending on that one.

The Hohner diatonics are a bit hard on the mouth at first, but we get use to this quickly.

Also I enjoy the sound of wood combs much more then platic ones, even though I know the plastic combs will last longer. Plastic sounds too clean and does not add as much harmonics as these wood combs. Note that I don't play with the same harmonica for hours, so the comb doesn't swell as much as it does for busy blues players.

Forget about changing the reeds. The MS series is easier to open and reassemble, but the reeds are hard to find and expensive.

Anyway I mainly accompany myself with the harmonica while playing acoustic guitar, and when I'm big enough, I will play blues with it.

I thought as a good bass player and a decent guitar player that harmonica would be the easiest thing in the world. Sheesh! I now stand corrected. But it's a lot of fun to learn such a vibrant instrument.

I'm now completing my 12 keys collection of Hohner Blues Harp MS.

It was time to upgrade my old bent Blues Harp, the lacquer gone from wood comb. I purchased the new MS Blues Harp. The brass plates are rough on my lips, and the wood comb edges are hard on my tongue. I thought it would be a breeze to bend notes. Not so, this upgraded harp is longer, wider, fatter, and takes a LOT MORE air to get a sound. If I could return it I surely would. It's not an improvement to the original Blues Harp.

This is Hohner's response:
"Perhaps you purchased the wrong Harp for your specific needs. There's many Harps, many Hohners. As far as quality, sound, and assembly Hohner remains unmatched by industry peofessionals."

Comments about Hohner 532 Blues Harp MS-Series Harmonica:

Hohner decided to take the classic Blues Harp and "improve" on it. This harp used to be put together with nails, and was difficult to service. The case used to be a soft plastic material with snaps. Many people hate the new modular system harmonicas, but I think that they are much more practical for maintenance, and the new hard plastic case protects the instrument much better. If you still want an old-school design, buy the Marine Band. I could never see much difference between the two original models, despite claims that the Blues Harp was easier for bending notes. The new Blues Harp has retained the old pearwood comb, so if you want a truly modern model, you'll have to look for one with a plastic comb. Anyone who can hear a noticeable difference between a plastic comb and a wooden comb has a very gifted ear. Bottom line, Hohner has given its devotees several choices, and I happen to enjoy them all!

    Not just for Blues Anymore

Comments about Hohner 532 Blues Harp MS-Series Harmonica:

I love these harps. I've been a serious player for years now, and I've tried all the popular brands. It may be sacrilege, but for my money I like the Blues Harp better than the Special 20. The wood comb adds a warmer tone, and overall makes the harp more rugged. The plastic comb on the Special 20 doesn't absorb moisture like the wood comb, which can sometimes contribute to blown reeds.Forget what they say about this being a "blues" harmonica. I play in a rock and roll band, and Blues Harps are all I play.

Comments about Hohner 532 Blues Harp MS-Series Harmonica:

I have played barine bands for years and didn't care for the older style blues harp but the MS series is a home run for Hohner. Nor only is the MS blues harp more air tight but the option to switch out reed plates and covers makes it the go to harp for me on stage. Now I just need to see how it holds up to weekly playing. So far So good

      Possibly My Favorite Hohner

      By Tom Bird

      from Wisconsin

Comments about Hohner 532 Blues Harp MS-Series Harmonica:

I'd call myself an advanced beginner when it comes to harmonica playing. I only have a few harps but I always thought that Hohner Special 20s were and always would be my favorite. That might not be the case anymore. I haven't played it much yet but I am really digging this Blues Harp. The edges are very smooth and it feels great in your hands. The wood comb is something I never liked about Marine Bands, but this one seems much smoother and looks gorgeous. I also love the wide open back design for volume and the way that "HOHNER" is stamped on the back of the comb. It really looks sharp! The reeds are very responsive and easy to bend, but it is in the key of D which is the highest harp I own, so it is hard for me to judge. The fact that it is part of Hohner's MS or "Modular System" family is also pretty cool. That means they are super easy to take apart and replace with new parts should the need arise. I think I love this thing..
It seems like all Hohners cost too much nowadays. What can ya do...

      The harmonica with an image.

Comments about Hohner 532 Blues Harp MS-Series Harmonica:

I started playing harp as a kid after seeing "The Blues Brothers" for the first time. This was in the pre-MS days. I gravitated to the Blues Harp because of its name and the image it represented to me. The current Blues Harp MS is a fine instrument, if a little over-priced (in all honesty, I kind of prefer the original pre-MS Blues Harp). I find all the current Hohner MS models and the Special 20 sound identical. I cannot tell the difference. Because of this, I have stuck with the Blues Harp, again mostly because of the name and its image. However, I will say I do not care for the wood comb. Over the past few years, my preference has changed to plastic combs, so I took the plastic comb from a Pro Harp MS, and put it on my Blues Harp. When the reeds die, I'll get the MS replacement reeds for my special custom plastic comb Blues Harp. I don't know how well the Pro Harp MS model is selling (I, myself, have never known anyone who played it), but what I would suggest Hohner should do is discontinue the Pro Harp MS, and replace it with a second Blues Harp model, with a plastic comb. So the consumer would have a choice of a Blues Harp with a wood comb or a plastic comb.

Comments about Hohner 532 Blues Harp MS-Series Harmonica:

I go the A blues harp about a week ago and I just can't put it down!! To start off with the blues harp has a great tone with it's wooden comb and brass reeds. The notes are very bendable right out of the box and the harp feels really good in the hand. The blues harp also has a really good weight in my opinion, meaning that it doesn't feel that you are holding a cheap harmonica. The tone is warm and inviting and I can see why this harmonica is perfect for the blues. Now there are some negatives to every harmonica and I would have to say that the harp is not the most airtight harmonica ever but I think that it just adds to the warm tone while still going ham on a solo at a gig. The blues harp also has an edge to it. The cover plates come a little past the comb and might feel uncomfortable for the first few jams but you will get used to it and it will not be a big problem. The blues harp is fantastic with chords and soul playing but is not the best for crisp single notes if you are looking for something like that I would buy a golden melody. Over all this harmonica is up their with my favourites and it can only get better from here. I hope that this review helped you.

Comments about Hohner 532 Blues Harp MS-Series Harmonica:

I bought my first Hohner harp for 52 years ago. The only harp I play now is the Hohner blues harp and the Musician's Friend has the best prices! I have the privilege to lead Praise & Worship services on Harp and guitar in the local jail and prison chapel services where the brothers love the sound of the harp. The Hohner blues harp has a tone and note bendability that is unequaled. Play a Hohner once and you won't play another.

Comments about Hohner 532 Blues Harp MS-Series Harmonica:

I was very happy with this purchase. The particular brand of harmonica I purchased has been a favorite of mine for quite some time. Extremely affordable, the wood-combed blues harp allows for moderately fast, but very warm playing that takes to bending and overblowing quite well. More than the product though, I was impressed by the service. Originally this product did not arrive on time, as they had instead mistakenly sent me a completely different model and key of harmonica when I had a gig that next day I needed it for. Distressed and a little peeved, I called them up and was impressed at how courteously and quickly they resolved the issue by next-day shipping the correct product just in time for the show. The original mistake accounts for the less than perfect rating, but I am happy to know that I can be a valued customer from time to time and that they have the availability to rectify situations quickly and accurately.

This is an awesome sounding harmonica. If you want you want a harmonica where you can dig in and really cry the blues, play single notes or use it for general purpose as I do then this is the harp for you. It has a really deep, warm, rich and mellow sound, which I really like. The tone is actually mellower than the Marine Band (which I also own). It really allows for deep musical expression. The tone and timbre of this instrument are very impressive. It?s also very comfortable on the lips. It?s easier to maneuver around on than Lee Oskar harmonicas. (I play guitar so I need a harp that I can get around on quickly). Additionally, it?s well constructed and very air tight. For me the Blues Harp really defines the way a harmonica should sound. Really awesome harp, you can take it apart too if you need to. My only problem is that it tends to slide around in my neck rack when I am playing but since this thing sounds so good that can be overlooked.
