Comments about Hohner American Ace Harmonica:

Purchased the G key of this harp line as a convenience for when I was simply practicing. Straight out of the box it needed to be tuned and a reed was unresponsive. Once I went throuth the hassel of tuning it and fixing the offset, it now plays. This is the main reason I gave this harp a below average rating - you expect it to play reasonably well right out of the box. This one didn't.

It requires more air to produce a note, as most of the cheap harps do. You can get bent notes with some effort (I usually play with a brace, which makes bending even more difficult). I have only played the harp sparingly, so the reeds may loosen over time making bending easier, but I'm not sure of that. Plus, I got the G harp, which tends to be easier to bend than most other keys (like C, for instance).

I think these harps are great for beginning players who are interested in exploring harp playing or for those who play more folk styles. They are reasonably playable and at a cheap price. For those who are into blues and rock styles I would go no lower than the Big River as far as Hohner's line goes.

If you play live, these will do for folk stylings but, again, not so much for blues or rock. Spend the extra money for the better harps.

Great Beginner Harp

By Lt. Reno

from Detroit

Comments about Hohner American Ace Harmonica:

American Ace has always been a great beginner's harp. In the old days (1980s), it was made in Ireland and had a wood comb. Now its made in China on a plastic comb. Its still a great choice for beginners or for those who just play for fun and don't want to spend a lot for a harp.

I carry this in my pocket everywhere

By Gomer

from Los Angeles

Comments about Hohner American Ace Harmonica:

I received the American Ace as a stocking stuffer a while ago and have been slowly learning it, and it has been very patient with me. I now have a nicer hohner with a wood comb too and have done some comparisons between them - I can definitely tell a bit of a difference is feel (seam of the plastic comb is rough on my lips) and in playability (some reeds feel sluggish), but the Ace still sounds beautiful when you play it well. Overall, this harmonica is great fun for the price and has become a great friend of mine.

Not bad...

Comments about Hohner American Ace Harmonica:

The American Ace certainly is not the highest flying harmonica but not bad. In fact, I've even played mine at gigs (as a not-so-old standby). After awhile, it was grounded after a reed went flat. Eventually, I took a stab at working on the flat reed, brought it back in tune and returned it to flight status. After getting far more than my moneys worth, the American Ace again became a casualty. It is currently grounded.Maybe the name of this review should be changed to "to be continued..."

Great beginner model

By Flea wanna-be, Emile

from metairie, LA

Comments about Hohner American Ace Harmonica:

Well, my American Ace is pretty ancient and still jams. It takes a lot less wind than my Kay cheapie harp and even bends notes fairly easy. I will upgrade just to see if there is any difference with higher priced ones but this is a damn good playing, made in China, harmonica. If you are starting out, give one a try.
