Hohner

Robust low tones for those formerly wimpy higher diatonic keys like E and F.

The Thunderbird, the latest addition to the legendary Marine Band product line, creates a new benchmark for low and super low diatonic harmonicas by incorporating:

• Special new reed profiles for fast response and high volume even at an extremely low pitch.
• Patented triple laminated and layered bamboo comb construction.
• Conical lower cover design by noted harmonica-customizer Joe Filisco prevents reed rattle.
• Cover and plates fitted with Phillips head screws for easy maintenance.

Now you can get down and dirty with keys such D, E, and F.

Hohner Thunderbird

Features:

Buy this harmonica!! Its a Crossover +.

Tuned!!! Very nice cords.

The bamboo comb is resonant, does not swell or hold moisture, beveled at the ends, looks & feels good.

The reeds made of thicker material perform great, sound deep & are responsive.

The cover plate redesign removes the buzz of #1 reed hitting the cover, you can see it but it makes no impact on holding or cupping. Just enhances the deep sound.

Open back, screwed together, corners slightly rounded.

The best off the shelf I've ever got.

Quality:

Play this harmonica, it plays just like a regular diatonic. Its air tight, no more wind tunnel playing, you can really play it right out of the box. I think Hohner has really put the time into these Harps. All of the materials used seem to be an up grade, quality of manufacture as well. Take a regular Marine Band and everything you would want fixed, is!

Very nice low, deep sound.

Start a song out on the low key harp and move up the octave as the song intensifies to your regular tuned harp.

Value:

I can tell you that I don't want to spend $125.00 on any harmonica to have it not be great and not last a long time. I've had this low D for a good 7 months now, still prefect.. So i'm buying a low F that I will use alot more than the low D. Yes thats $ 250.00 on 2 harmonicas!!!! Too much money for a regular guy like me, wait till my wife finds out!!!!. I am a serious hobbist though, teach a little, seldom play out in my duo, but..... everytime I pick up my low D there's no turning back. The difference of playing a real instrument vs. all the others I've tried is worth it. I can't, won't, contiune to spend what little money I've got on the tin crap we've been dished out for so long. Value! Sound, tightness, responsiveness, tuned, and it seems to be robust enough to be around as a player for a long while. Probably longer then me when my wife sees that bill. She dosen't understand that I won't have to buy or fix this harp for a long time, value.

Overall:

I wrote this review because no one else has and some one needs too. I love playing Harmonica, I love to learn new stuff, play in a duo, I've got lucky enough to meet and become friends with some of the Top Dogs. Wonderful experiences, friendships because of playing the Harmonica. So I feel like I have a responsibility to tell you about this harmonica, from me and the people I've talked to about it.

This harmonica is the real deal. If you play and would like to step up to a nicely crafted actual instrument and leave behind all those things that plague our cheaply mass produce money wasting harmonicas that you wish you never bought, this is it. Now is the time. You can buy this without the worry that we know, as harmonica players. I also would like to say that Joe Filisko's name is on this harmonica! Unlike so many endorsements you see out there for material reasons, this name speaks to the quality you will own. I feel the need to say that again, this endorsement speaks to the material improvements and technical advancement Hohner has implemented for their Crossover and Thunderbird lines. This is the new bar!

Well worth the investment, even if your wife finds out.

Overall:

First of all, I dig low harps. They are an excellent way to vary your sound if you play harp all night long with your band like I do. In comparison with a regular Hohner Marine Band in low tunings, well, there is very little comparison. The Thunderbird's conical lower cover plate eliminates worrying about redd rattle. Plus, this harp is so responsive. It allows me to play some of my faster runs as quickly and with the same percision as my custom harps in the regular registers. I've been playing my Thunderbird in Low D for a little over a week now and it is a totally inspiring instrument. Sounds fat acoustically and like a dang freight train amped up. If you want to cop some of that Sonny Boy II "Bye-Bye Bird" mojo, these will help get you there if you got the game to go there. Very much looking forward to my Low F that I have on order. Yes, these harps are bit spendy, but short of paying quite a bit more for custom, they are the best game in town (including Seydel's low tuned harps) IMHO. GET YOU ONE!
