Hohner

The exceptional-sounding harmonica with a sealed bamboo comb that professional player's are overjoyed about.

With the Marine Band Crossover Harmonica, Hohner has expanded the Marine Band series to introduce a top-of-the-line, professional-quality harmonica for discerning musicians who play modern blues, rock, jazz, soul, or funk.

The Marine Band Crossover Harmonica's revolutionary laminated-bamboo comb is completely sealed, making it water repellent and exceptionally stable. In combination with the screw-together assembly, the Marine Band Crossover is extremely airtight, with fast, even response and a raspy, powerful sound that's exceptionally well-suited to amplified playing as well as acoustic styles.

The crossover Marine Band harmonica's modern-compromise tuning is ideal for single-note playing in different positions as well as easy note bending for contemporary blues, rock, jazz, soul, and funk, while still ensuring a full chord sound. The Marine Band Crossover is an optimal addition to the Marine Band harmonica series. The Marine Band Crossover uses the same reedplates as Hohner's Marine Band Deluxe harmonica for interchangeability.

Due to the Marine Band Crossover's compromise tuning, chord playing is smooth and full and the single notes also play nicely in-tune, so playing in positions other then 1st and 2nd is not a problem for intonation. Because of the airtight construction (a sealed comb and screws instead of nails to attach the reedplates), bending, overblows, and overdraws are much easier then on most other diatonic harps. This is great news for beginners learning to bend and speedsters and overblowers out there looking for an airtight harmonica that can keep up with their playing.

Testimonials about Hohner's Marine Band Crossover:

Dave Gage: "One of the best-sounding and playing diatonic harmonicas out-of-the-box. Great for players of all levels and musical styles and worth the extra penny for the increased quality and playability. The sound is bright, but not overly bright. It plays as well as expensive, customized harmonicas."

Joe Filisko: "This Crossover is an exceptional harmonica. I have to say that this is without any doubt the best playing out-of-the-box harmonica that I've ever had my hands on. It's a notable, substantial upgrade to the diatonics I have played. It played very well. That's a big deal, because I trusted it. The tuning is superb; responsiveness is excellent. It's very responsive. The bends are right there."

Steve Baker: "As a Marine Band player for 40 years I really love the Crossover and am proud to have been closely involved in its development from the very beginning. The first time I played the very first prototype with a bamboo comb I was blown away by the sound, volume, response and playing feel and thought 'this is it!' I own a lot of custom harps, but this is what I use on stage because it's tough, reliable, and both plays and sounds great."

Jerry Portnoy: "The Marine Band Crossover is a terrific harp in every aspect: beautiful, sealed bamboo comb; strong, attractive cover plates and; most importantly, well tuned with good volume and projection; plus smooth, responsive playability from bottom to top. It also comes in a handy and unique zippered case. I've made it my personal harp of choice. Another winner from Hohner!"

Phil Wiggins: "It's beautiful. It is nice right out of the box. Great tone. Great feel. I'm loving it."

Dennis Gruenling: "I like the comb a lot: how it felt, how it responded, how it sounded. The feel and response is closer to a custom Marine Band."

R.J. Mischo: "The Crossover is a great instrument! I've been playing professionally since 1979 and have tried all the models and this is the best out-of-the-box harp yet."

David Barrett: "The Crossover is Hohner's best harmonica to date . . . great feel, playability, and most importantly, great sound! For those who want the great sound of our forefathers but the playability of a modern-designed harmonica, put Hohner's Crossover harmonica at the top of your shopping list."

James Conway: "I needed a five overblow and it was there. To get a rack-mounted, five overblow right out of the box—I was happy with that."

Marine Band Crossover Harmonica M2009

| Review By: Ed Huey | 2 months, 1 week ago

Features:

Very light, feels great in the hand.  Air-tight seal, bamboo comb and spot on  intonation  produce bright, robust tone with minimum of breath pressure.  Bends are immediate, easy to play at all dynamic levels. I love the option of do it yourself replacement of  the reed plates when needed.

Quality:

This is an excellent out of the box harmonica.

Value:

Great price from Musician's Friend.

Overall:

As a solo act I play Americana/ early Blues guitar and harmonica styles. As an ensemble player  I perform blues, rock and country music with electric bands. Hohner harmonicas have been included in my instrumentation since 1966, including Marine Band, Special 20 and Blues Harps, Blues Band and Pocket Pal diatonic harmonicas.    My go to harmonicas are custom instruments.  I purchased my first Crossover on Joe Filisko's recommendation (I was using Spec. 20's). I needed a back-up while a custom harmonica was beng repaired. This is my second Crossover purchase because the  Crossover is very close to a custom harp. The  air-tight bamboo comb requires very little air pressure to get a full, bright sound from this instrument. It allows you to play at contrasting dynamic levels, supports your tempo, hand effects and rhythm effects. It sounds great miked through a Sure SM58, Astatic JT30 or Harmonica Honker (pinkie mic) or plalying acoustic. I gave this instrument a 9 because custom harps  are 10's.  This harmonica is as good as it gets out of the box.  As my back-ups wear out, I will replace them with Crossovers.  I highly recommend the Hohner Crossover M2009 Harmonica.

Great Harp!

Features:

Speaking specifically of features - The most standout feature on this harmonica is the bamboo combs, which are fantastic. It's like having the quality of real wood combs without the swelling you usually get from real wood combs.  In addition, this harp has a very nice tone that I believe is attributed to the bamboo combs.

Quality:

Quality is top-notch. My crossover harp sounds great, feels great, and plays great. What more could you want?

Value:

Yes, it costs a bit more than most other harps, but you get what you pay for.

Overall:

I have tried several different types of harmonicas and this one is my favorite.  I will be buying more in different keys.

II play the Charlie McCoy style Harmonica and usually buy the Golden Melodys.  Terry McMillan played these.  Anyhow I I learning to play some overblows and overdraws because I don't want to have to buy different tuned harps.  Well the crossover I got doesnt overblow out of the box. It is such a hot harp however ; I hesitate to make adjustments myself. It is a great harp!   I am going to try one of the custom places to buy my "Howard Levy" harps. Lol....BUT However: For just a little more you get a much better harp than your regular harp and the case itself is worth that.  For example: better volume, better tuning, and great response!!!!

Features:

It seems this hohner bends tooooo easy. To get a solid 2 draw sound is impossible on the Bflat I purchased. No volume...to try to get some volume is to bend the note down. In the same price range, I prefer the marine band deluxe. Next at a lesser price is the special 20. These are my two most player friendly out of the box hohners for now. Nice enough marketing on the part of hohner, but to move into the custom harp market with mass modding a deluxe is a rough road. I would pay more for a hohner custom harp if the tuning specs were tighter. My 2cents.
