OVERVIEW

Exceptional sound and a sealed bamboo comb make it the professional player's go-to harp.

With the Marine Band Crossover Harmonica, Hohner has expanded the Marine Band series to introduce a top-of-the-line, professional-quality harmonica for discerning musicians who play modern blues, rock, jazz, soul, or funk.

The Marine Band Crossover Harmonica's revolutionary laminated-bamboo comb is completely sealed, making it water repellent and exceptionally stable. In combination with the screw-together assembly, the Marine Band Crossover is extremely airtight, with fast, even response and a raspy, powerful sound that's exceptionally well-suited to amplified playing as well as acoustic styles.

The crossover Marine Band harmonica's modern-compromise tuning is ideal for single-note playing in different positions as well as easy note bending for contemporary blues, rock, jazz, soul, and funk, while still ensuring a full chord sound. The Marine Band Crossover is an optimal addition to the Marine Band harmonica series. The Marine Band Crossover uses the same reedplates as Hohner's Marine Band Deluxe harmonica for interchangeability.

Due to the Marine Band Crossover's compromise tuning, chord playing is smooth and full and the single notes also play nicely in-tune, so playing in positions other then 1st and 2nd is not a problem for intonation. Because of the airtight construction (a sealed comb and screws instead of nails to attach the reedplates), bending, overblows, and overdraws are much easier then on most other diatonic harps. This is great news for beginners learning to bend and speedsters and overblowers out there looking for an airtight harmonica that can keep up with their playing.

Testimonials about Hohner's Marine Band Crossover:

Dave Gage: "One of the best-sounding and playing diatonic harmonicas out-of-the-box. Great for players of all levels and musical styles and worth the extra penny for the increased quality and playability. The sound is bright, but not overly bright. It plays as well as expensive, customized harmonicas."

Joe Filisko: "This Crossover is an exceptional harmonica. I have to say that this is without any doubt the best playing out-of-the-box harmonica that I've ever had my hands on. It's a notable, substantial upgrade to the diatonics I have played. It played very well. That's a big deal, because I trusted it. The tuning is superb; responsiveness is excellent. It's very responsive. The bends are right there."

Steve Baker: "As a Marine Band player for 40 years I really love the Crossover and am proud to have been closely involved in its development from the very beginning. The first time I played the very first prototype with a bamboo comb I was blown away by the sound, volume, response and playing feel and thought 'this is it!' I own a lot of custom harps, but this is what I use on stage because it's tough, reliable, and both plays and sounds great."

Jerry Portnoy: "The Marine Band Crossover is a terrific harp in every aspect: beautiful, sealed bamboo comb; strong, attractive cover plates and; most importantly, well tuned with good volume and projection; plus smooth, responsive playability from bottom to top. It also comes in a handy and unique zippered case. I've made it my personal harp of choice. Another winner from Hohner!"

Phil Wiggins: "It's beautiful. It is nice right out of the box. Great tone. Great feel. I'm loving it."

Dennis Gruenling: "I like the comb a lot: how it felt, how it responded, how it sounded. The feel and response is closer to a custom Marine Band."

R.J. Mischo: "The Crossover is a great instrument! I've been playing professionally since 1979 and have tried all the models and this is the best out-of-the-box harp yet."

David Barrett: "The Crossover is Hohner's best harmonica to date . . . great feel, playability, and most importantly, great sound! For those who want the great sound of our forefathers but the playability of a modern-designed harmonica, put Hohner's Crossover harmonica at the top of your shopping list."

James Conway: "I needed a five overblow and it was there. To get a rack-mounted, five overblow right out of the box-I was happy with that."

The first thing that you notice when you pick this harmonica up is the way it feels in your hands. All the edges are rounded off for a smooth feeling, which also makes it very comfortable on your mouth when playing. It looks like it would be beard and mustache friendly, but I can't attest to that. The comb is laminated and sealed wood, and the covers seem to be much stronger than a regular Marine Band, which are easily crushed. It is put together with screws, so maintenance and cleaning no longer require major surgery. The sound is very sweet and pure, and easy to play. If I were asked for suggestions to improve it, I would indicate the key on the right end of the harmonica so that it is visible without having to squint to see the stamped key on the top cover plate. Also, it comes in a fabric case. The case is well designed, but I think that Hohner's hard plastic vented cases that are supplied with most of their other models are much more practical. At this price point, I would like to see a more substantial case. Which brings me to the third point, the price! I realize that harmonicas are no longer at yesterday's prices, but I know that I won't be purchasing a whole stable of Crossovers, no matter how nice they are. If harmonica were my only instrument, maybe, but I play guitar and sing , and accompany myself with the harmonica in a neck rack. Hohner's other German models have always been very satisfactory, and it comes down to affordability. But I do really like this harmonica. In my opinion, it is right up there with the Marine Band Deluxe.

I bought 5 Crossover harmonicas and I've been playing them for about 5 or 6 months now. I'm impressed with the tone these harps have and I like the bottom area of the harp as it's open and allows the sound to really flow.My problem is that 2 of the 5 harps I bought have blown a reed already. Not an ideal thing when these harps cost twice as much as most others.I'm not going to purchase any more of them. I'll stick to the Special 20's for half the price and longer shelf life.

Comments about Hohner Marine Band Crossover Harmonica M2009:

As a solo act I play Americana/ early Blues guitar and harmonica styles. As an ensemble player I perform blues, rock and country music with electric bands. Hohner harmonicas have been included in my instrumentation since 1966, including Marine Band, Special 20 and Blues Harps, Blues Band and Pocket Pal diatonic harmonicas. My go to harmonicas are custom instruments. I purchased my first Crossover on Joe Filisko's recommendation (I was using Spec. 20's). I needed a back-up while a custom harmonica was beng repaired. This is my second Crossover purchase because the Crossover is very close to a custom harp. The air-tight bamboo comb requires very little air pressure to get a full, bright sound from this instrument. It allows you to play at contrasting dynamic levels, supports your tempo, hand effects and rhythm effects. It sounds great miked through a Sure SM58, Astatic JT30 or Harmonica Honker (pinkie mic) or plalying acoustic. I gave this instrument a 9 because custom harps are 10's. This harmonica is as good as it gets out of the box. As my back-ups wear out, I will replace them with Crossovers. I highly recommend the Hohner Crossover M2009 Harmonica.
Very light, feels great in the hand. Air-tight seal, bamboo comb and spot on intonation produce bright, robust tone with minimum of breath pressure. Bends are immediate, easy to play at all dynamic levels. I love the option of do it yourself replacement of the reed plates when needed.
This is an excellent out of the box harmonica.
Great price from Musician's Friend.

Comments about Hohner Marine Band Crossover Harmonica M2009:

II play the Charlie McCoy style Harmonica and usually buy the Golden Melodys. Terry McMillan played these. Anyhow I I learning to play some overblows and overdraws because I don't want to have to buy different tuned harps. Well the crossover I got doesnt overblow out of the box. It is such a hot harp however ; I hesitate to make adjustments myself. It is a great harp! I am going to try one of the custom places to buy my "Howard Levy" harps. Lol....BUT However: For just a little more you get a much better harp than your regular harp and the case itself is worth that. For example: better volume, better tuning, and great response!!!!

Comments about Hohner Marine Band Crossover Harmonica M2009:

I bought 5 Crossover harmonicas and I've been playing them for about 5 or 6 months now. I'm impressed with the tone these harps have and I like the bottom area of the harp as it's open and allows the sound to really flow.My problem is that 2 of the 5 harps I bought have blown a reed already. Not an ideal thing when these harps cost twice as much as most others.I'm not going to purchase any more of them. I'll stick to the Special 20's for half the price and longer shelf life.

Comments about Hohner Marine Band Crossover Harmonica M2009:

I have three MB crossovers. In only the F key I am having draw problems in the upper register. I believe it is a quality control problem on with this harp alone. Too bad there is a no return policy because I feel this harp should be replaced by Hohner.

crossover is tops

Comments about Hohner Marine Band Crossover Harmonica M2009:

Wow! What a great harp! I consider myself a well-rounded amatuer. Play a few gigs a month. I have used Hohner special 20's, Lee Osker, and Bushman harps. The crossover is definitly a cut above. Craftsmanship was great, sealed tight with a great sound and plays like a dream. Takes about 1/2 the air to get a good clear sound, easy to bend too. I bought only one just to check it out, It came on Friday, gigged all weekend with it and I'm ordering more as soon as I finish this review on Monday! Great harp, thank Hohner!

Very Nice New Harp

By fred humbert

Comments about Hohner Marine Band Crossover Harmonica M2009:

This harmonica was a big surprise for me. I had pretty much given up on Hohner after about 40 years, Moving to Lee Oskar. A friend talked me into trying one of these new Crossovers. At arms length, it looks just like your classic Marine Band in terms of shape and size. Up close you can see it's not the same. It feels "beefier" in your hands. The cover plates are held down by some solid looking brass screws making it look easy to take apart. The cover plates sandwich a unique bamboo comb. Although my harps reside in a custom built Anvil Briefcase, the Crossover comes in a really nice zippered case.
Playing this thing is what grabs you the most, as it should. It's really freakin' air tight. No wasted air, making the Crossover loud and fast.
What I can't speak to, yet, is how this harp will hold up over time. Another concern is the cost. It is very expensive. While I have been very happy with this one Crossover, I don't think I can afford to replace dozens of Lee Oskars with Crossovers. If the price was dropped, I would consider it.
Hohner should drop the price to make it available to more people and build on that following. It would be a worthwhile investment on their part. Plus it might make me a Hohner guy again.

Comments about Hohner Marine Band Crossover Harmonica M2009:

I bought two Crossovers one in F and one in Bb. The Bb harp is fine but No 8 hole does not draw on F harp without extreme effort. I don't bend notes and I don't believe I abused the harp in any way. Because of this the harp is barely usable. No doubt this is isolated case. I would not advise against anyone ordering a Crossover in F, so take my "No" for what it's worth.

I bought my first harmonica in Germany back in 1974. I was very enthused when this product came out and it definitely has a lot of character in any key. The sound quality is utmost when either whaled or whispered. I've purchased A - G and found it to be a viable investment to my passion of playing.

Comments about Hohner Marine Band Crossover Harmonica M2009:

As a strong novice/potential intermediate player, those more experienced can take the following at face value. I started with the highly recommended Special 20, which I liked, but went through fairly quickly, largely, I'm sure, due to inexperience. That said, picking up a Crossover, suddenly everything was just that much easier. It feels, to coin perhaps a new term, 'cooperative.' Easier to bend, smoother; it was suddenly far easier to find my way up and down the register.

I also tried Lee Oskars, the new Rocket, and a Suzuki ProMaster (heavy, clunky), but disliked the wider holes and brighter tones/volume. The Crossovers I have are all operating just fine. I plan on replacing all my keys with Crossovers. Great harp.

I got this harp in C to try out and it is a better harp than I expected. Plays better than my Lee Oskars and Special 20's and I played them side by side.

I have tried several different types of harmonicas and this one is my favorite. I will be buying more in different keys.
Speaking specifically of features - The most standout feature on this harmonica is the bamboo combs, which are fantastic. It's like having the quality of real wood combs without the swelling you usually get from real wood combs. In addition, this harp has a very nice tone that I believe is attributed to the bamboo combs.
Quality is top-notch. My crossover harp sounds great, feels great, and plays great. What more could you want?
Yes, it costs a bit more than most other harps, but you get what you pay for.

Comments about Hohner Marine Band Crossover Harmonica M2009:

It seems this hohner bends tooooo easy. To get a solid 2 draw sound is impossible on the Bflat I purchased. No volume...to try to get some volume is to bend the note down. In the same price range, I prefer the marine band deluxe. Next at a lesser price is the special 20. These are my two most player friendly out of the box hohners for now. Nice enough marketing on the part of hohner, but to move into the custom harp market with mass modding a deluxe is a rough road. I would pay more for a hohner custom harp if the tuning specs were tighter. My 2cents.

This is a true improvement on a standard Marine Band. It feels better to play. I can bend better and have better breath contreol with it. I have never played a professionally set up harp so I can't compare, but it is better set up out of the box than anything I have played which includes most brands and models of harps in the mid- price range as well as the Suzuki promaster.

Always wanted to try a top tier harmonica, and got this one at a good price from MF, but I'm a little disappointed. Has more volume than any harp I've had, but tone is a little harsh. Takes very little air to play except for 1,2&3 draw. Takes a lot of pull before you get the sound out of them making for a slight hesitation while playing. I'll stick to special 20s, Lee Oskars or Golden Melodies for gigs.
