The Old Standby, made in China, is about as good as you would expect from Hohner's budget harps. But that's not really good enough for the Old Standby. You see, the Old Standby is a classic harp model that dates back over a century to 1892. Up until recently, it was made in Germany, and was a splendid instrument. Generations of Country artists preferred the Old Standby as thier harp of choice. But since the 1990s, it is a Chinese made beginner's harp. What a terrible way to celebrate the model's centenial. This needs to change! Hohner, if you are listening to your customers, please return the Old Standby to a quality German made instrument again, but sell it at a lower price (like the Big River MS). To make the Old Standby unique, give it phospher bronze reeds, like the Suzuki Bluesmaster and the Bushman Delta Frost. Phospher bronze reeds are gaining popularity with harp players, and a German made Old Standby would be the perfect Hohner model to enter the phospher bronze market. Please listen to us, Hohner!

I love the Old Standby. The classic Hohner model 34b is an icon among harps that rivals the Marine Band. The sad thing is that Hohnor, for over a decade now, has been making Old Standbys in China with a significant decrease in quality. How I wish Hohner would restore the respect and greatness to model 34b by making it in Germany once again at a low price comparable to the Blues Bender and Big River harps. It would be to Hohner's benefit to offer more German made models in the lower price range, and the Old Standby is a model that deserves such an upgrade the most. Come on Hohner...please make the Old Standby, model 34b, in Germany again at a price comparable to the Blues Bender and Big River models.

Comments about Hohner Old Standby Harmonica:

Bought the F harp of this line to have cheap one handy in my practice space. Sound is adequate. Construction is not terribly air tight, as common among cheaper harps, so more effort is required to get notes. Bending is difficult, especially with a brace. The reeds may loosen over time to make bending easier, but I don't know.

These are adequate harps for beginners or simple folk players. Blues and rock players should spend more for a better harp.

Took it out of the box, played a bit, and lost one note. Removed the screws for a quick fix. Love the sound, and it is easy to play. I am going to order more of these soon.

              Best Buy for the price

I have played Harmonica for over 50 years and several times per week with audience.

I play country gospel 1 and 2 position as well as bluegrass rhythm.

What do you expect for a low priced harmonica?

Reeds stick and even quit, but the cover removes easily and a little plinking usually fixes the problem. I'm sure that a better harmonica cannot be bought for twice the price of the OLD STANDBY. Compare to PIEDMONT BLUES and see my point.

I generally play the SPECIAL20, but I keep a set of OLD STANDBYs for backup.

I always keep a D,G, and C new and in the box for when an unarmed harp player wants to jam with me or take a lesson. The cost is not as big a sacrifice and I can give it away when we finish the jam.

              pretty good harmonica for beginners

              By John-URDb.

Comments about Hohner Old Standby Harmonica:

I have been playing harmonica for a few months now and am a pretty good beginner. I would recommend if you are a beginner to buy this and a cheap bluesband. they both have a different feel. If you are an expert this makes a great beater harmonica. I now play with special 20's but these were good too.

better than the more expensive Blues Bender

              By blu-rocker 007

              from Chicago

Comments about Hohner Old Standby Harmonica:

While none of Hohner's Chinese made harps can be considered real instruments a pro would use, they are certainly not toys, either. Of this Chinese line, the Old Standby is the best, even better than the Chinese made Blues Bender, which is almost double the price. The Old Standby has a louder and fuller tone. The ones I have owned have lasted a decent amount of time, also. It would be great if Hohner were to make the Old Standby in Germany again, and keep it at a lower price (the Old Standby is a well-loved model that traces it's lineage back 100 years), but at least it has the best quality of the Chinese line.
