Features:

This is a base model.  I suppose the features are:

-The hand strap on the bottom (I never use this)

-Flexi tube mouth piece that lets you play in your lap

-Direct mouth piece that lets you play like a trumpet

-A nice zipper case.

Mid-rate for features as there isn't anymore or less than you would expect.

Quality is also middle of the road.  For the price (Value) it's a standout.  This would be sufficient for a solid child's instrument.  The plastic is rugged as are the reeds.  Mine came slightly out of tune and there's a definite pressure difference between reed sets.  The lower register is more sensitive to air flow where as the higher register requires more breath to sound.  This can make it difficult to blend notes in the middle of the range.

Overall, it's fun.  It's cheap and has decent playbility that's above the "toy" level, but definitely not on "performance" level (maybe couch performance?).  That they call it a student model is almost appropriate, but I feel like someone who really wants to play a melodica as a serious learner would find a higher quality piece more to their suit.  Still, I enjoy it as a lark.  The advice is either to buy this for the price or buy an expensive one for performance.  It's usable for casual stuff and I honestly can't think of many settings for a melodica outside of that.

Great Instrument for the Money!

Features:

There's really nothing special to expect from a Melodica. Blow and play. This thing does a perfect job of doing just that. I'm sure there are other better ones that cost 3-4 times the price, and even more, but if you're just getting started or want to experiment with a new instrument, this is a great way to get some instant gratification. I do enjoy using the tube mouthpiece so I can set the melodica on my lap and play. With practice, you can use the regular mouthpiece and hold the instrument upright like a horn.

Quality:

It's made of plastic but it's pretty thick and sturdy. Comes with a really nice case as well. Just store it when you're finished and this thing will last you a good while.

Value:

It is an oustanding price. Why the heck not? Instruments cost a lot of money. If you don't have a ton of cash and want to try something new, this thing is perfect. Hohner has always been a good brand to me even with their low-end stuff.

Overall:

Overall if you're interested in a melodica and you're a beginner, then you don't need to look any further than this Hohner student model. It reminds me of the perfect combo between a harmonica and an accordion.

Good Instrument for the price

Features:

The audio range of this melodica is good.  It comes with a short mouth piece and a tube to blow into as well.  The case is very nice for an instrument of this price.  The tone is a bit uneven.  If you are used to a standard key size this takes some getting used to since they keys are smaller. It is a joy to carry around because it is so light.  I purchased this to add some texture to some acoustic songs my group plays.  I've performed with it multiple times and find the audience seems to really like it because it is so different. People aren't used to seeing someone play an instrument through a tube.

Quality:

You get what you pay for.  The unit I received was badly out of tune.  So bad that it was unusable.  However, I contacted Hohner and sent mine back and they sent me a new one or tuned the original.  It is now acceptable but not perfect.  The keys don't press evenly so it is a bit tricky to play but the more I've played it the less problem it is.  If I continue to add melodica to our song list I may consider one of the higher end models.  I was pleasantly surprised and happy with Hohner's customer service.  I expected to get blown off for such an inexpensive instrument but they were actually very professional and courteous.

Value:

Great value for the price, quality and features.  Except for being out of tune so badly in the beginning,  it exceeded my expectations in all other areas.

Overall:

This is a good beginner model.  Hohner needs to work on insuring the instruments leave the factory in tune.  For such a inexpensive instrument it works well and is fun to use.
