A fun, colorful uke that can be your go-to, take-anywhere instrument.
The Waterman Ukulele pays homage in part to the legendary ukulele designer, Mario Maccaferri. Inspired at the 1939 World' Fair, he saw plastic as the material of the future. Mario eventually combined his skills as a luthier and his business of injection molding and invented the Maccaferi Ukulele. After being endorsed by entertainer, Arthur Godfrey, on his TV show, 9 million of the Maccaferri ukes were sold between 1949 and 1969.
KALA Ukulele has been inspired by the 1950' Maccaferri ukulele and created a new uke with a focus on the outdoor enthusiast. œThe Waterman is a ukulele for everyone but pays special tribute to people that live the waterman, outdoor lifestyle. Comments about MK-SWB Makala Waterman Ukulele:
This is not a wooden ukulele so don't expect wood tone. It's plastic, but it sounds pretty good and better than the more expensive plastic outdoor ukulele I have been carrying in my car. I am an experienced player that performs in two different groups, and I have taught ukulele for the last 3 years. I say this just so you don't think I'm new to the ukulele (I have 17 ukuleles), if anything, I'm new to plastic ukuleles. This is a fun little ukulele to mess around with, and will work extremely well in extreme conditions. I don't take my $1500 ukulele camping or swimming or leave it in my car. I'll take this one instead. I've had it about two weeks and it hasn't made it to the car yet as I'm enjoying messing around with it in my "easy chair". I mostly play tenor ukuleles, but this one, because it is a soprano, and the frets are so close together, it is easy to move around the fret board when figuring out new melodies, etc. Two things to be aware of: I ordered aqua blue (and it came that way), but the picture on the web page showed it as having a blue back and cream colored top when aqua blue was selected. What I received had a aqua blue covered front and black back, which I actually like better, but I thought I was ordering what the picture showed when I selected aqua blue. The second thing to note is that these come with new Aquila strings and they will stretch for up to a couple of weeks, which is normal, making you do a lot of tuning at first, but then the strings settle right in. This will happen with wood ukuleles, or other brands, etc. I see a lot of ukulele reviews (various brands, etc.) from people that say they have already had their ukulele for over a week and it just won't stay in tune. I suspect the ukulele is fine, they're just not giving the strings enough time. Over all, for it's purpose, I'm very happy with the KALA Waterman ukulele and would recommend it to others. Just don't expect it to sound like a wood ukulele. Expect it to sound like fun plastic.
