Comments about Kala U-BASS Acoustic-Electric Bass:
This is a good beginner bass. It costs much less than a traditional upright bass and is easy to play for people with small hands. As others have pointed out, there is some fret buzz, but overall, I like the U-bass. It's easy to transport to and from practice and gigs. It comes with a gig bag, which was nice. You will have to tune it frequently as the synthetic strings stretch. It's a great little instrument.
Pros
- Three Strings Sound Great
Cons
- Bad Buzz On D String
- Poor Tone Quality
Best Uses
- Backup
- Concerts
- Jamming with friends
- Practicing
- Worship Bands
Comments about Kala U-BASS Acoustic-Electric Bass:
Have an electric solid body u-bass with great sound. Wanted an acoustic-electric u-bass so that we don't have to take the amp everywhere, but it has a really bad buzz on the "D" string, it's just not the same. We ordered it on a Sunday and was in by Wednesday, but now that I need to return it,it's taking a lot longer to receive the returned lable. What's up with that?
Pros
- Consistent
- Long Life
- Strong
Cons
- A Bit Too Small
- Buzzes
- Poor Tone Quality
Best Uses
- Practicing
Comments about Kala U-BASS Acoustic-Electric Bass:
(Acoustically) At first, I thought it was the stupidest idea anyone could come up with, but when you play it, and hold it, it's really good at giving you whatever it is that you want.
(Electrically) When I plugged it in, I noticed that there was no preamp at all. Nothing. Then when I played it, there was too much squeaking from the string when I picked it. I really think you'd be better off buying something like an Ibanez, or a Fender.
I think it's good if you would like to just learn the chords. It could be sold for a lot less though.
Pros
- Good Tone

Comments about Kala U-BASS Acoustic-Electric Bass:
What a great little bass. plugged in it delivers amazing tone people can't believe the bass from such a small instrument. Yes it is not too loud unplugged and the strings stretch a bit at first but it is unlike any thing out there and just fun to play.
Comments about Kala U-BASS Acoustic-Electric Bass:
A little costly for something I would need to buy extra equipment to use.
U-bass is good fun, small if you have smaller hands. Does sound pretty much like an upright. I returned it, though. Not a whole lot of juice, passive system, so I would need a pre-amp to come through a typical smaller PA. It was ok through my combo amp (100 watts). Also, it was recommended to get the one with the frets, but then I found that I got fret buzz. I probably would have gotten that solved eventually, as I became used to the scale, but I still think if I ever had one of these again, it would be fretless.
So I thought the cost was a little high and I returned it, which also cost an arm and a leg, lesson learned. But I do think the U-bass is pretty much what they bill it as, so long as you have powerful enough equipment. Oh, and so long as you don't mind all the flak you get from the boys for playing a bass with a less than infinite scale! ;-)
Comments about Kala U-BASS Acoustic-Electric Bass:
Well I do really love playing it and the sound is close enough to an upright to have a lot of fun too. (spruce top, fretted). I usually play short (30) scale basses and did not find the size of this bass that hard to adapt too. I am playing it thru an Ampeg Portabass amp and the tone is great. As everyone says, very much similar to an upright bass. I used the normal passive input (without an outboard pre-amp) and have no trouble getting a nice tone and plenty of volume.
The features are detailed in the Musicians Friend description so here are some useful stats:
neck width at the nut 1.77----
neck width at the 12th fret 2.2 ----
neck thickness at 1st fret 1.8 ----
scale 20.375----
neck meets the body at the 12th fret----
lower bout 10.187----upper bout 7.687----
body depth at lower bout 3.125+----
body depth at upper bout 2.75----
nominal string diameters (after one re-string/stretching as per KALA video)
E string = .185 ----
A string = .155 ----
D string = .102 ----
G string = .077.
I am a very meticulous person, so some of the things I note may be of little concern to others. I have not seen an earlier production model but I was somewhat disappointed in the QC on this uBass. Right out of the box, The input jack was lose, there were 3 tiny spots of something, orange in color, apparently spilled on the top after the finish had partially dried (and left there). The finish is so thin you can feel the wood grain pretty much every where. The ends of the frets are poorly dressed and are felt when you run your hand up/down the neck. The magnetic cover for string access is not flush and can be dislodged accidentally. I know this is not a high priced instrument but I did expect a little better...
I really do like the uBass itself and the sound so, in all likelihood I will end up keeping it because whatever I get as a replacement could be far worse (as far as QC)...
