Comments about Kala U-BASS Fretless Acoustic-Electric Bass Ukulele:

This is a surprisingly good instrument. It's super light, super portable, it has a great upright-like tone and It's not hardy to get good intonation with practice. It's become my favorite recording instrument for working at the computer. If you've ever tried the Ashbory, this beats it coming and going. I'm seriously thinking about getting one of the solid body 5-string versions.

Comments about Kala U-BASS Fretless Acoustic-Electric Bass Ukulele:

fell in love with the Kala after seeing one, and after seeing a number of performances on YouTube by Kala players. Yes, it looks like a novelty item, but it's really a serious instrument. It doesn't have the sound or resonance of a larger instrument, but it has a very good sound, and what really makes it great is the portability. This is a bass that fits in the upright storage compartment of an airliner. If you've ever played an Ashbory bass, this plays better, tunes easier, the strings last longer, and it had a better tone. Unlike the Ashbory, you can actually play it unplugged. It's not loud enough to keep up with other instruments, but it's plenty loud enough for practice, making it a great instrument for practice on the road or late at night.

The asking price may sound like a lot for such a tiny instrument, but the build quality is very high here. The top is solid spruce, the body has an attractive and well done 5-layer binding on the top, and the headstock has an inlaid "Kala" as well as a multi-colored frog logo in what looks like mother-of-pearl. The fingerboard inlays are very cleanly done, though I find that just looking at the side dots works better for me. The whole thing has the feeling of solidity and quality.

I was torn between the fretted and fretless versions, I play upright and fretless bass, but I've also heard upright players say that the frets really help on a scale this short. I went back and forth, but finally decided on the fretless model, and I'm glad I did. It's not at all difficult to adapt to the short scale if you'e already used to switching between upright and fretless bass guitar. I was also a bit torn between the hollow body and the solid body models. The solid bodies have a cutaway, but the advantage of being able to play unplugged finally made be decide in favor of the hollow body. I was also tempted by the mahogany bodied model, which I've read has a woodier, more upright like tone, but price was a factor. As it is, I'm perfectly happy with this model.

Sorry that a low priced part ruins the instrument

Comments about Kala U-BASS Fretless Acoustic-Electric Bass Ukulele:

Had the instrument not been defective, my rating would have been higher. I'd like to think my experience was a rarity, but I'm a bit cynical. There aren't many working parts involved here, and it would have been nice if they'd all worked out of the box.
This is a very hip little instrument. It does what it does and has a lot of unique and attractive qualities.
The craftsmanship on the body and fretboard is really nice, but I encountered a real problem with the tuner on the A String. As soon as I began tuning, the mechanism seized and the key stripped out on its shaft. With the price tag on this instrument, bad hardware is inexcusable. This should have been caught in "quality control" and replaced.
          The price seems fair.

Kala U Bass Acoustic Fretless Bass Uke

          By D.R. Wyatt

          from West Memphis/Marion area, Arkansas

Comments about Kala U-BASS Fretless Acoustic-Electric Bass Ukulele:

A good value on a very unique instrument. Much easier to transport to and from the gigs even with an amp. A better option than acoustic bass guitars. They are extremely habit forming and fun to play.
I couldn't give a 10 rating because other than a fretless bass uke, (no controls or fancy bells and whistles) it is what it is. You will need to add strap buttons if you wish to play like a bass or guitar. The strings are proprietory, and only Road Toad and Kala sell them, although Aquela will release a set soon. It takes a few tunings for the solid urethane strings to settle in and stay in tune. For those who do not trust gigbags, there are hardshell cases for purchase as well.
There were some slight cometic glitches, namely the Road Toad Frog not being centered, and a weird grain spot on the back, but these really were not particulalry noticible from afar and did not effect the sound anyway. Overall a well made instrument.
They come with a fairly good gigbag, and the binding on them is well done (the American ones do not have them) that gives the bass a class appearence. It nails the upright bass very close, more so than any acoustic bass guitar I've owned or played. The bass has a very short scale (about 20 inches) that takes a little getting used to, and the fretless neck is out of tune without being dead on. For those experiencing joint/shoulder problems, the lighter weight and short scale, with the easy to play strings make it easy to play and transport.
The sound is warm and very acoustic with a short decay, like an upright bass fiddle. There are no controls on the bass, and all EQing will have to be done at the amp or preamp. It's a bit of a niche instrument, with it's strength in playing country, jazz, or anything else you would play an upright bass with. It is quite a conversation piece as well.
