This was my first mando, and given as a gift. I just pulled it back out after having been playing a really nice old Gibson for the better part of two years and was pleasantly surprised by how good this little A sounds. Each instrument is different, and I got a gem. Don't write this one off, you may get a good one.
I ordered this mandolin based after reading the specs on it. It arrived with scratches in the finish...in fact there was finish that had dripped through the f-holes and was you could see the drops on the raw wood inside. The sound was flat and they claim it was shop adjusted...not a chance. Don't waste your time with this one.
After about 4 months of backorders i finally received my mandolin. I only have ever played one in local music stores, so i don't know a whole lot about them. But ive been playing guitar for 7 years and its pretty much like any other stringed instrument. The mandolin itself looks fantastic, the finish is very nice and the mother of pearl tuning knobs and lining add a very nice touch to the instrument. I couldn't wait to receive my mandolin, im currently deployed to iraq and havent been able to play guitar for over 5 months (it would of been sooner if it hadn't kept being backordered) but i finally got it yesterday and i can't say im disapointed. I had to look online to figure out how to tune it because its an 8-string and i didn't know the accompanying string was an octave higher. I finally tuned it and got some buzzing but later fixed it by raising the included bridge a little higher. The sound is clear and sharp , great clean sound. I was disapointed at first that the bridge was not already installed on the instrument and thought i might have to screw the bridge into the guitar itself which would have been very disapointing. However once you get it in place nad tighten the strings it stays in position fine. I also got an A-style case and the mandolin doesn't fit well inside with the bridge on. Other than that the instrument is a great piece of equipment especially for people like me who need the portability of a mandolin but want the clarity of an acoustic. If you are considering it go for it. I wouldn't have wanted anything more out of this instrument.
Purchased this mandolin based on the past reputation of Kentucky mandolins. I'm really disappointed with the overall quality of the instrument. Finish is "fair" at best. Fit is really poor. Sound and tone are lacking. This is far from a professional model instrument.
