A mid-priced mandolin that lets you play like a pro.

The Kentucky KM-630 Standard Mandolin has a Loar-inspired F-style maple body with multi-ply binding. Long-scale maple neck with adjustable truss rod. Extended 29-fret bound ebony fretboard with 12th-fret neck/body joint. Florentine headstock with mother-of-pearl fern inlay and Kentucky script. Gold-plated hardware. The Kentucky KM-630 Mandolin has an adjustable compensated rosewood bridge. The 'traditional nitrocellulose finish' has an aged appearance to it. Kentucky purposely allows the finish to be cloudy to give it the appearance of 40 years of polishing.

  • Extended 29-fret bound ebony fingerboard with 12th-fret neck/body joint

I am a Guitar player that started playing Mandolin a few months ago. I really like the Kentucky, I am familiar with what a good instrument should be, and this is a nice little Mandolin (but as with All Mandolins, it is imperative that it is set up properly) I have found that this Kentucky plays and sounds just as good as other Mandos that I had looked at, a few of which were 3 to 4 times the price. I would highly recommend this instrument; a lot of bang for you bucks.

I purchased this mandolin from a music store selling on Ebay. When I got it in the mail the thing was unplayable (I do professional set-ups, and I could not get it to sound decent). The problem was in the neck, which was completely twisted. After fighting with the seller to replace it, he sent me the one I have now. The KM-630 features the worst fretwork I have ever seen. I've had to dress several frets to get notes to sound, and there is a significant amount of fretbuzz all over the neck. The truss rod was not tightened at all before installation, so it could not be loosened at all, which it needed to be to give the neck some relief and so the strings would stop buzzing. The tuners were not even installed well (the tuners are horrible, and make it difficult to tune the instrument). It sounds cheap and has no sustain. I could make a better mandolin out of wood I find in my back yard.

Poor Set-up

By Rich-BQkHE

from Fairfax, VA

Comments about Kentucky KM-630 Standard Mandolin:

Bought this mandy for my daughter to take to Belmont College in Nashville. Nice instrument, but when we got it, it was obvious that it had not been set-up right before shipping. Impossible to tune and I'am going to have to take it to a local luthier before she can take it to school

excellent for all skill levels

By GuitarChica515

Comments about Kentucky KM-630 Standard Mandolin:

I am not a mandolin expert, but I have a mandolin just like this one, and I love it. If you're looking for a beautiful mandolin with a strong tone and complex features, then the KM-620 or KM-630 is the one for you. The KM-620 has maple back and sides, a German spruce top, F-holes, a maple neck, an extended rosewood fingerboard, dot inlays, and a beautiful mother-of-pearl headstock logo and overlay of leaves. It doesn't cost too much for a professional-level model, either. I got mine for $*** at ** when I was 14, and I still have it. If you want to purchase one like this, act now.

Great mando for the price

By Guitar Danno

from Topeka, KS

Comments about Kentucky KM-630 Standard Mandolin:

I just recieved mine yesterday. After setting up the bridge and jamming on it I was impressed. The only flaws mine had were a few minor scratches here and there. The top portion of the body that curves is a little on the rough side, but I am not disappointed by any means. I would have liked to purchased an American made mando but they are way to expensive. Looks like with a name like Kentucky it should be American made.

Great sound, small price.

By T.Willz

from Chicago, IL

Comments about Kentucky KM-630 Standard Mandolin:

The 630 is a great mandolin for a great price. After comparing several other mandolins in this price range, it was obvious that the Kentucky was the best choice. The fit and finish looks great, and the sound is nice - plenty of bark. Until you can afford a $5000 mandolin, get this one that only sounds like it cost that much.

KM-630 Review and Muscian's Friend Review

By John-rjfwy

from Saratoga Springs, NY

Comments about Kentucky KM-630 Standard Mandolin:

I bought this mandolin after quite a bit of research and seeking opinions of friends. It is a very nice instrument, sounds and looks great. The problem is the neck has bowed quite a bit and one of the glue joints has started to separate. This is in less than 10 months time which is very disappointing. Additionally, getting help from Muscian's Friend has been very difficult. I got an initial response that they are looking into the problem for me but I have not heard back from them in about 2 weeks. I have contacted them 3 times since then, but not even a response! It might be better to look somewhere else.

I own one here in Japan

By Chaplain Mark Bjorndal

from Kuraishi Village, North Japan

Comments about Kentucky KM-630 Standard Mandolin:

This little guy strums and picks really good. The sound is outstanding and the ease of fingering the frets is unmatched. I love Kentucky Mandolins and will never change. I've had pickers here in Japan offer me a good price for my baby but I just have to say "No thank you". You gotta have one of these if your serious about playing. Even if you're not so serious, you will never turn back.

tom teacher

By Tom Teacher

from Coleman, MI

Comments about Kentucky KM-630 Standard Mandolin:

I had problems with fret buzz and dead strings on the second, third and fourth strings starting at the tenth fret. Relocating the bridge and adjusting it did not correct the situation and required me to return the instrument. If you order I hope you have better luck, the Kentucky wasn't bad in tone and was fun except for the buzzing strings.
