Comments about Kentucky Master KM-505 A-Model Mandolin:
Being relatively new to the mandolin, I only owned one mandolin prior to purchasing the KM-505. It wasn't a terrible mando, but it wasn't a terribly good one either. Three things attracted me to the 505 as my next purchase: solid wood top & sides, great price, nice finish & hardware.
Overall, I'm very happy with the tone, the look, the hardware, and the instruments playability. I bought this mando used, and not only was it about $150 cheaper, it practically looked brand new when I unboxed it.
I really enjoy this mando and am very happy I bought it. Check out the way these sound on YouTube, there are a few reviews/previews of this instrument.
Comments about Kentucky Master KM-505 A-Model Mandolin:
My only gripe is the fact that it was delivered with absolutely no setup. I've never bought an instrument from Musiciansfriend that required such extensive setup. You'll want to be prepared for this. Research on the mandolin blogs do say that most mandolins require setup. So, this may be a factor that this is my first mandolin.
Now that its setup, I'm extremely pleased. I'd buy another. Especially at $399.
The workman ship of this chinese made mandolin is good. The finish was nice and the intonation came in nicely once you located the bridge with the backside of the bridge in line with the points of the f-holes.
I had some funky white powder left on under the finger board. It came out easily with a toothpick.
Action of the manodlin was great after some significant setup. Please note, this mandolin will need a setup. the nut needed to be cut as it was high. The bridge needs to placed and matched with the finger board height. This is not a play out of the box instrument. It cost me $40 to get setup.
This is a great value at the new Musiciansfriend price of $399. It was $499 just a couple of weeks ago.
Comments about Kentucky Master KM-505 A-Model Mandolin:
Nice woody tone. It works well for old time playing and bluegrass chops. It is well constructed with nice wood and finish. Most people are pleasently surprised when they pick it up and play it.
Has great playability. It looks great and sounds great.
Great tone and volume. Headstock inlay MOP. The finish is excellent
Alot of value for intermediate player that wants to step up from beginners mandolin
Comments about Kentucky Master KM-505 A-Model Mandolin:
I was very slightly bummed to find that it didn't come with a case, but then I'd rather spend my money on a great instrument - I already had a case, so no big deal. I was also slightly bummed to find that I had set to it up. But the good thing is that I pretty much know how to do it. I wound up having to call Customer Service with a problem I encountered with the set-up, and they helped me figure out what I needed to do; problem solved. This is a great mandolin to grow with, musically. My starter instrument was good enough to make me want to stick with it. The Kentucky MA-505 is one I can really progress with and enjoy for years to come.I like the extended fingerboard. The strings it came with aren't bad; I'll keep them until they wear out. The wood is fine quality; all the woodwork, really, is beautifully done. This is a beautifully made instrument. The grain of the wood is lovely, the laquer color is a bit darker and richer than what is shown on the website, the inlay is a beautiful ornament- it's a pretty little thing to look at in its own right. It has a nice, rich sound, warm, not tinny. It's got a good weight - it feels solid, but isn't so heavy that it kills the sound. The sound really projects.I've been checking out this mando for about a year or so on Musician's Friend and when the price dropped, I jumped on it. It's great value for the money.
I own a starter mando from another manufacturer, which will never compare to the full, warm sound of the Kentucky MA-505. I was ready to pay $600+ for a good instrument. But after I read a lot of reviews here and elsewhere, I settled on the MA-505 and I'm really pleased with my choice.
Comments about Kentucky Master KM-505 A-Model Mandolin:
I played one of these in Guitar Center today. Man what a good mandolin! This has a really nice balanced tone and isn't really overly loud or ringy. In the store there was a Mitchell A-Model mandolin right next to it so I played that one too. Well only 5 seconds after playing the Mitchell, I knew the Kentucky was way better! I highly recommend this mandolin!
Comments about Kentucky Master KM-505 A-Model Mandolin:
One of my mandolin students has one of these. I didn't expect a lot, considering my past experiences with the cheaper Kentucky mandolins, but this one looks, plays and sounds very nice. I was pleasantly surprised at the volume and tone. I liked it as well as the Eastman A-styles I've played.
