From the moment I pulled it out of the box, I could tell that is a well crafted uke. Every piece of wood is a good songwood and you can definitely hear the difference from knock off brands. It has strings, a neck, and a soundhole. What more could you want?
Amazing sound quality. Unlike the cheaper counterparts, it keeps in tune all the way down the neck. The instrument has an amazing timbre that you will love from the first time you strum it.
Worth way more than I payed for it. Amazing value.

Got this on the SDOD. Arrived at me house in awesome shape. Went to tune... And nothing but trouble. Thought I had some dead strings, an MF sent me out a nice set of Martins for free. Took it to my set up guy, and he told me the strings were fine, but the nut was pinching the strings too tight and causing troubles. Old strings off, minor setup done, and new strings on. Now, it plays like a dream.

Bought this for my 13 yo daughter.
Out of the box: it looks and feels great. It was easy to tune, however I did not use the tuner that came with it, I used my own. I expected a little better sound quality, however it still sounds good.I plan on buying new tuning lugs and new strings soon to see if that will make a difference in sound. It came with a cloth/ zippered case which will not protect it from falls but would keep it clean while not in use.

Nice uke for the price. I bought it out of curiosity never playing a uke before. I chose the baritone for tone and similarity to guitar layout. I use it to write songs and found it quite a bit of fun for playing my guitar tunes on. Recently brought it with me on an out of town business trip to mess around with in motel. Even funner now that I installed a piezo pickup and lowered the action.

Comments about Kohala KP-B Kanikapila Baritone Ukulele:

This is a very nicely-done inexpensive ukulele and would be a great first instrument or knockaround. It's fun to play and well worth the Black Friday price.

Construction is very clean - the seams are tight, with no excess glue inside or outside. The fingerboard and top of the body are bound, and a painted logo on the headstock is the only other ornamentation. Looks like the body is 3-ply laminate (just like every other acoustic instrument that doesn't say "solid" wood) with mahogany for the outer plys and a lighter colored wood in the middle. The upside is that laminated wood isn't as sensitive to temperature and humidity changes as solid wood, so if you're in an unhumidified Northern home or taking it camping this uke should take it in stride. The neck looks like it's made of solid mahogany, with separate pieces for the headstock (attached with a scarf joint) and neck heel. The neck has a smooth satin finish over filled grain that's comfortable to play. The body has a satin finish without the grain filler.

The tuners work well, and notes played high on the fretboard are also in tune thanks to the compensated saddle, which is unusual on a uke. According to my Snark tuner, all 4 strings were perfectly in tune at the 12th fret. Came with name-brand strings (GHS-USA) that sound good to me and settled in quickly. Action on mine is good, and it's very easy to play.

Tone is pleasant, and this uke is reasonably loud with volume balanced across all four strings. Chords ring nicely with more sustain than I expected. The tone is rich enough to enjoy but has fewer overtones than a more expensive solid-wood instrument.

The accessories are useful. The included chromatic tuner is compact, easy to use, and accurate (checked with Snark). The bright blue bag works for carrying the uke but has no padding whatsoever, so you'll need to be careful when transporting it. Also comes with a chord chart, which I haven't looked at because a baritone uke has the same tuning as the four highest-pitched strings on a guitar.

I play it in banjo g modal/sawmill tuning and it is a great alternative to my open back banjo claw hammer playing, put on some finger picks and play modal tunes such as Pretty Polly, Little Sadie and Shady Grove, etc., the tone and volume are perfect for singing old time songs such as these without having to compete with the volume of your banjo.

I got this as s Stupid Deal, so it was a bargain (along with MF's famous FREE SHIPPING!!). For some weird reason, the ukulele is very popular with adolescent girls (or anyone who can see any reason for the existence of Taylor Swift, Zooey Deschanel, of the band Train). As a guitar teacher I have had an income opportunity, but I like to "leave the door open" so to speak, for a switch to guitar. I use the Mexican vihuela, a wacky 6-string "guitarlele", and now the baritone uke to introduce these kids to new and bigger frequency ranges. This one is pretty solidly made and will serve its purpose very well. Thanks, Musician's Friend!

Having some lutherie skills, I was not put-off by the issue of a loose neck joint. I considered that to be part of the price of admission for such a great instrument at a ridiculous price. Very pleased, after gluing it up and clamping it over night. Wonderful to take on trips as a passenger in the car. Who needs a radio?

I was looking for a uke that my family could pick up and play. This is a good place to start. Bigger than a 'standard' uke and tuned to top 4 strings of a guitar (EBGD). Still has the uke sound for lots of radio songs out right now.

This is my first ever uke so I did not know what to expect. This is a baritone uke, meaning this is the biggest of all the ukes. I had to google the tuning for this. I used the DGBE tuning to get the best sound. The sound for GCEA is just too low. Anyway, I bought this for my daughter but I ended up using it a lot. It is great for practice since the frets are smaller. It came with average strings and it will sound much better if you invest on better strings. I got this on Stupid Deal so I got my money's worth. Plus it came with a gig bag and a nice little tuner. Hope this helps.

I play most anything with strings. I've avoided Ukes because they're pretty basic, and my wife hates the sound. But... I went ahead and bought this on a whim intending to only play it when the wife wasn't around. But wow... what fun... there's a whole genre of music I never even considered, but what a joy to experience - AND PLAY! You have to learn "Over the Rainbow/Wonderful World" in the style of Israel Kamakawiwo'ole. OK... so I'm late to the game, and everyone knows this tune, but I didn't. Morale of the story... if you're a good musician, buy a uke... it will open up a bit more music than you expect.

They do a very good job making a basic instrument here. The only flaws I found were a tiny bit of glue on the body and one of the highest frets was bent a little.

Setup was pretty easy, there was a shim under the bridge that I pulled out and that lowered the action. Nut was actually very well done on mine.

Sound is nicely resonant, maybe a little dark. It really sounds as much like a classical guitar as a ukulele. For me, I got this instead of a classical guitar to work on fingerpicking and it has worked great for that.

The "package" this thing comes in is very cheap. The gig bag is more like a dust cover, I haven't got the tuner to work properly, and the book is a total joke. The book is so bad, literally a poorly done Islander patois that explains almost nothing except that the uke is about island style. A decent chord sheet would have been more useful. In fact, the book makes me question the seriousness of the entire brand!

If you get it on a Stupid Deal like I did, five stars. Regular price, four stars

I WAS TOLD IT WAS "USED IN NEW CONDITION" . The tuning machines were cheap and sloppy! One was broken so I put new machines on it,and lost any savings I made buying USED! I saved nine , buying used and spent twenty on new machines. LESSON LEARNED!
