Comments about Kohala KP-C Kanikapila Concert Ukulele:
My concert ukulelee arrived today with free shipping and only 3 days after I ordered it. I have been playing a soprano uke for some time but I have big fingers and sometimes they overlap onto adjacent strings screwing up the chord. This concert uke gives more room for big fingers and is much easier for me to play. It also has a mellower sound and is easier to fine tune with the worm gear mechanism. I absolutely love this uke. I can't comment on it's durability as I just received it today. But so far I am delighted.
Comments about Kohala KP-C Kanikapila Concert Ukulele:
I received this as a birthday gift from my wife, and my 19 year old daughter decided that she wanted to get one also (she's been playing guitar for a couple years). She chose a Luna "TC MAH" tattoo uke, and we've spent quite a bit of time playing these together this afternoon and comparing them. While they have slightly different features, and are around the same price, the Luna is clearly a better quality and better sounding uke. Part of that may be the better strings on the Luna, and that it has a better set-up (no sharp frets, lower action) and a larger body (3/8" wider lower bout; 1/8" thicker sides).
I'll be taking this Kohala back and exchanging it for a Luna Tattoo model (yes, I have my wife's permission!). It's not a bad uke - a set up would certainly help - but the Luna is *that much* better for a little less money.
At this price, this is a well featured uke. While the body is laminated woods, the mahogany has very nice color and grain in it. It has body binding and neck binding, with fret markers both on the side of the neck and on the fingerboard. Solid tuners, and a compensated saddle. I mark it down one point for having cheap strings on it (compared to another uke of similar price); I suspect these have hald back the tone a bit.
It's well put together, and I don't see any glue residue inside the body. As mentioned above, the saddle is compensated, and the nut seems to be cut with good spacing, but the slots need to be lowered a little; it goes sharp on the lower frets, so it sounds out of tune on some chords.
The reason I rated it a little low is because of rough fret ends and high action. The neck seems straight, so the saddle needs to be lowered and the nut slots need to be lowered; this uke would play much better with a little more care to the set-up before it left the factory.
I was surprised at how well this was put together and how nice it looks at this price. It stays in tune, and it produces nice volume. A quality set of strings and a better set-up would take this uke up to a 9 or 10.
