Comments about Lanikai All-Mahogany 6-String Tenor Ukulele:

Musician's Friend has good products, prices and service. I've had to return ukes them before, though.
I love the way the six-string ukeleles sound, the ones with the doubled first and third stings. So I ordered the "all-mahogany" Lanikai LU2-6.
I like the rounded body and it's good that the bridge is well towards the sound hole and not too far south on the top. I can tell that it would sound great except for two deal-breaking defects. Let me say right here that I've been playing fretted instruments for over forty years, I do set-ups on lots of them for myself and others, and I've designed and built some pretty good guitars from scratch. So here goes:
Right out of the box, I saw that the action at the nut (at the left hand) was so high that it would throw the intonation way off. I'm not just talking slightly high action here, but comically high. But I still wanted to hear the tone and volume, so I started tuning it up. Pretty quickly, one of the classical guitar style tuners quit working. You turn the knob and nothing happens. Seeing more of what I consider defects, I decided to send it back.
The bridge is well designed, but poorly machined and finished. There are numerous burrs or shreds of wood hanging off from the machining. It hasn't been sanded or smoothed at all. It's rough.
The head is out of proportion with the rest of instrument, in terms of looks, size, and weight. It's too big and too heavy. The three-on-a-plate tuners are too heavy too, throwing the balance of the whole instrument off.
I suggest keeping the body and neck the same, but losing the classical guitar-style head and tuners, and using a small steel-string guitar-style head, with small open-back geared tuners, as on the less-expensive Lanikai and Kala ukes.
I still want a serviceable and not-too-expensive 6-string uke. I hope someone will suggest a brand and model for me. What other companies make these?
