Comments about Lanikai All-Mahogany Acoustic-Electric Tenor Ukulele:
The most important thing you need to know about this ukulele is that it won't sound its best until you replace the strings. Oh, there's nothing terrible about the Aquila nylon strings supplied... but the whole point of a tenor ukulele is to deliver a deeper, richer tone, and you can't get that with the lightweight strings and G4 C4 E4 A5 tuning that this Lanikai is delivered with. But replace those strings with a set that's designed for G3 C4 E4 A5--the G string an octave lower than a typical soprano or concert ukulele--and you have a whole different instrument!
If you really want to do it right, put on wirewound bass strings, such as Southcoast Ukulele Company's "ML-SW: Medium Gauge Linear Set w/ smooth wound basses". The wirewound (over nylon core) G and C strings in this set, because of their greater weight, ring longer and give a deeper, richer sound--one that could almost be mistaken for a guitar.
The sweet thing about doing this is that you still have GCEA tuning, so you can play all the tunes you know with the fingerings you know. This is unlike a baritone ukulele, which requires you to learn completely different fingerings. Yet when restrung as described, this tenor has a rich, guitar-like sound that no soprano or concert ukulele can match.
With regard to this particular instrument... the gloss-black finish is very classy, and almost makes me feel as if I should be wearing a tuxedo when I play. The Fishman preamp works well, but I did note a little hiss at high gain settings. The built-in tuner is a convenience, although I find my clip-on Snark to be more precise and easier to read. Note that there are no attachment points for a strap, so if you want to use one, you'll have to add your own.
All in all, I'm more than pleased with the look and sound of this ukulele. It's everything I had hoped for, and more.
