I love the 14" scale of this ukulele which places it in between my soprano and tenor ukuleles. It is shipped with high quality Aquila strings. I have only been playing ukulele for a little over a year and as a beginner found this an excellent instrument. It has a beautiful warm tone and the intonation is beautiful. Gear tuners a good quality and after initial tuning/stretching of strings it holds tune great. I would highly recommend this ukulele to any beginner or intermediate level ukulele players.

Like most things I buy through Musician's Friend, I purchased the Lanikai LU-21P during a Stupid Deal event. For the "stupid" price, I think this soprano model makes a fine introduction into the world of ukuleles. I've owned this uke for a couple weeks so far and find myself playing it daily. I'm primarily a bass player, so I'm used to long spaces between frets, and the scale on a soprano uke is quite small, but my smallish fingers have no problems with the cramped spacing. For those musicians who have hands that would please the NBA, a larger scaled ukulele should be considered. The strings are still stretching after 2 weeks of playing. I'm constantly making fine tuning adjustments, even between songs, and I don't consider myself a forceful player. The intonation is a little off, but is still playable, in my opinion. Those cursed with perfect pitch may disagree. Overall, I'm pleased about getting the Lanikai LU-21P as my first uke, but honestly, I would have been a little disappointed had I bought it at full price. Perhaps one day, I'll get to compare this ukulele to one that sells for 3 times the price. It would be interesting to find out what kind of tone and how much volume one can get out of the tiny body of the more expensive offerings. But until then, the LU-21P will do just fine.

Comments about Lanikai LU-21P Pineapple Ukulele:

This Uke was ready to go out of the box. Just tune and play. I can't believe the projection, a lot of sound from this little pineapple. I'll be taking this with me where ever I go because everyone's happy to hear a ukulele!

Comments about Lanikai LU-21P Pineapple Ukulele:

When I first got this uke I thought I'd have to return it - it simply would not stay in tune. BUT, after 3 days the strings finally settled down and remained in pitch consistently. I've never seen strings take so long to stretch out! The tone is pretty good, not great, but of course what do you expect from an inexpensive soprano size uke? The geared tuners work VERY well - avoid ukes that have tuners without gears! My only real gripe is I'd prefer a classic body shape, but for the price I picked it up at on a "Stupid Deal", I won't complain. Highly recommended for starters or pros!

Comparing this inexpensive model to my vintage Martin Uke -- The tone is very similar, a sweet, ringing tone like the Martin --just not quite as loud. It frets accurately and seems to have good workmanship. I'm very pleased, especially at the "Stupid Deal" price.

A Great Way To Start Ukin'

Comments about Lanikai LU-21P Pineapple Ukulele:

Please note that these ratings are based on the fact that this is a very inexpensive instrument... That being said, my friend had purchased one of these ukes in 2007 or 08 for an anti-folk band we were playing in at the time. After he moved away, I needed to add a ukulele to my collection. I have explored every corner of the vast world of super cheap traditional instruments on Musicians Friend. I work for a non-profit homeless shelter, so obviously I can't afford to pick up a new instrument unless it's priced like a Rogue. (Incidentally, the spider square neck resonator and violin bass are awesome, cheap starter instruments.) It's hit or miss, but at least you can get the hang of a totally different instrument without going bankrupt. This ukulele is fantastic for such a low price. Out of the box, you have to let the strings break in for a day or two before it holds perfect tune, (as with any low-priced nylon stringed instrument) but after that, it's truly a gem. It has a very bright, high, treble tone. The sound is very unique, the feel of the instrument is very natural, and it's great to tote it around if you need something portable to keep your fingers busy. Playing this instrument has led me to discover my love for the ukulele. So much so, that I have since upgraded my instrument, and continued to learn more and more. It's too bad you can't include URL's in your reviews, or I could give you an idea of what this instrument sounds like recorded... I, Josh Nonnenmocher, do have a Reverbnation and Myspace music profile if that helps. "Here's mud in your eye!"

Comments about Lanikai LU-21P Pineapple Ukulele:

Just buy this one. This is the best price you'll find on a quality uke. Merely place your fingers on the frets and strum, and the resulting sound will blow your mind. I was previously unaware that such a delicious tones could be emitted from something that costs less than one tank of gas in a smart car. Its a great starter ukulele, and I suggest that you invest in some better strings, but it is a jammin' machine.

For mandolin players: the 14" scale is the same as a mandolin, so I re-strung with GDAE nylon strings and it makes a perfect mando-lele.

being unfamiliar with a uke, upon opening I thought "pretty cheap" they didn't even get the strings on right. I was thinking , 4 strings same as a mandolin. so I re-strung it. even the tight high E doesn't move too much between uses.

Great pineapple uke for unbelievable price. I would have loved the thing, but one of the tuners was "crunchy" and not working properly. I thought the rest of the uke was pretty nice for the price. However, the tuners are important so it was sent back. I am hoping for better luck next time.

i've been playing the blues harp for more than 2 score years (that's 40 years). my hands were badly beat up in the military. i've picked up the guitar many times but my hands are just too broken up and painful to play for more than a few minutes at a time.

this thing is awesome! easy to play! no pain! and helps keep my hands flexible.

i can just see me doing "tiptoe through the tulips" at carnegie hall with it. 8-)

The strings come out of tune A LOT when you first start playing it but that's normal for new string instruments. After about a week of tuning up constantly its beginning to hold its sound. I think this is a great uke for the price.

I purchased this Uke as a stupid deal of the day so the price was excellent. For an inexpensive Ukulele, the deal was good. At the price I paid, it's a good instrument for students. It looks good and it's very playable but the sound is a little tinny. Not a surprise for an inexpensive instrument. I recommend it for students and casual players. The regular price may be a little high.

Kind of small. Intonation is not great. Stays in tune after you keep at it for a half hour. Worth the sale price I paid for it. Easy to play. Feels like an instrument of somewhat decent quality. Spending a lot of time tuning, to compromise mediocre intonation

I would give 3 1/2 stars if I could. I own a Gibson Les Paul and a Taylor 314ce acoustic. This item is not in those classes.

The special Nysoft Strings are easy to play but they take a while to get in tune at first and to keep in tune. I'm assuming this is just a burn in period and they will settle in. I love the look of the pineapple shaped body, and the construction seems really good. No complaints.

This is a nice uke with a solid tone and good playability. It took quite awhile to get the strings to stay at pitch (they stretched a lot in the first two weeks). I got it a very reduced price and am extremely satisfied with the value/price ratio. I would not have paid the list price for it.

This is the perfect ukulele for a beginner. It has a nice tone and holds it's tune (once the strings are through stretching). I find it easy to practice on and my family was amazed how fast I learned to play songs with it.

The transaction with Musician's Friend was smooth as silk. I bought it from the "Stupid Deal Of The Day" email I received. It shipped the same day and I received it a couple of days later.
