Leaning toward great!

Features:

So what do you call features?  This Lanikai LU-6, six-string tenor uke comes with beautiful wood, and a great lacquer finish.  I also like the geared tuners and the double hole headstock.  It has a beautiful sound and the overall appearance is very professional.  I'm glad it came with really good strings. It has no dots on the side of the fretboard, no endpiece.  I added an endpiece to accommodate a strap.

Quality:

I would say it's a well-built instrument, obvious it went through several checks before it left the shop.  The string set-up is fine, but my high C twin snapped overnight.  I was hoping it would stretch and settle a bit, but it couldn't take the winding tension to get it to pitch.

Value:

I've looked for a long time at this one, and was hoping to check out a sample, sadly the workshop I attended in November 2011 only had an 8-string.  Seems like most dealers, or at least ones available online, had the price standardized at $259.  Musician's Friend came down by $50 and I made the move.  Great deal.  (Here's a good question:  Why don't these makers package up the instruments with good cases?  If you don't like the included one, you can pony up for something different.  You need a case period.)

Overall:

I'm giving an 8 overall for now.  I tried for several days to get used to the low A, but it just didn't compute with my ears.  It's like putting a male baritone in a soprano quartet.  After my high C snapped, I bought  a set of standard tenor strings and replaced that octave low A with a unison A.  And of course, I replaced the high C with another high C (octave over the standard C).  It now sounds like the sweet ukulele I imagined, and the extra strings add to the volume as well as the tone.  The two new strings are thinner ones and I'm getting some buzzing.  I'm not sure if I can fix it, looking at several things.  I like felt picking, and that may contribute to the problem, or the thinner strings may be vibrating too much and too close to their partners, or my fretting may not be as accurate as it needs to be with two strings on a note (like me pushing the strings together).  Once I figure this out, that rating will go to 10!

I just got my new Lanikai LU-6 delivered about 3 hours ago and this thing is pretty damn cool! I was very impressed with the fact it came with Aquila strings and the overall quality of the instrument and set up. The only problems I can report is that the 5th tuner is a bit loose in the bracket when not up to tension and will need to be adjusted. Also, the action above the 7th fret is a bit high and will require some shaving of the bridge insert on my next string change, but truth be told I am finicky about a low action.   I do agree with Zog that it should come with position markers on neck binding. This is my 4th ukulele and my first 6 string model. I do have to admit that it is going to take some time to get used to the string arrangement of g-cC-E-aA as I generally do a lot of finger picking and the bass string on the A set does throw me off a bit. But, the overall sound is lush, full and sweet, especially for its ply construction.  Definitely worth the price! A very nice uke indeed!

I have had mine about two weeks. I have made some ukes in the past and normally have intonation problems up the fret board. When at the local music store I saw this hanging on the wall. I tryed it out and with a clip on tuner checked the intonation it was closer than anything i have tried. After having it about a week i changed the low octave first string to a high A string I like the sound better. I have some aquilia strings that I plan to install al though the stock GHS ones sound pretty  good. The finish is first rate and the abalone arount the binding and sound hole look really nice. the frets are finished very well and the neck plays well all the way up. The only thing missing on 'uke is dots on the side of the fretboard

After I got my Lanikai LU-6 I didn't care much for how it sounded with the strings it came with. I replaced the wound string with a nylon string, and on the 3rd pair of strings I replaced the lighter string with another heavier one. After that it sounded so beautiful. Out of all of my guitars and ukes, this is my favorite to play. I tune mine GCEA. And it is a very pretty Uke.
