OVERVIEW

An excellent Hawaiian ukulele featuring beautiful sounding and eye-pleasing koa tonewood.

Lanikai offers the NK Natural Koa Ukulele as a striking edition to the Lanikai Custom Series. This Lanikai ukulele is constructed from gorgeous woods with exotic figuring and highly contrasting tones due to special construction techniques and a meticulous process used for selection.

The NK (Natural Koa) ukuleles display Lanikai's commitment to tradition by crafting these instruments with solid koa tops and koa back and sides. This NK-T ukulele is a tenor-size and features a mahogany neck, die-cast tuners, abalone binding, koa headstock overlay, and come equipped with Aquila strings.

"The long-established use of koa on ukuleles is no accident, the tones produced by this wood is synonymous with the ukulele itself," says Drew Lewis, product manager, adding, "Nothing sounds or looks like koa."

This ukulele is strung with Aquila Nylgut strings.

FEATURES
Tenor ukulele
Koa top, back, and sides

This is a great uke. Lanikai is a well-respected brand, and this is at or near the top of their line. The (solid) Koa wood is lovely, the finish is superb, and the abalone binding and headstock text are attractive features. Hardware and the (Nylgut) strings are good quality. First-time uke buyers often complain about a uke's inability to stay in tune, but pay no attention to this. This is characteristic of plastic uke strings and they will settle in in a day or two. Once the strings stabilize, the 18:1 tuners make tuning easy and precise. The NK-T has great tone, and has a very nice neck and quality feel for a moderate-priced uke. Playability was good right out of the box, but I lowered the action a little and dressed the fret-ends a little. Not much needed. Strings are always a matter of choice; different strings will give a different sound. I like to try different ones, but the Nylgut are hard to beat. Different types of picks can also make a big difference. I now have 6 ukes, and this, my second tenor, is a keeper.

My first Lanikai NK-T Custom Series Koa Tenor Ukulele from Musicainsfriend.com was a total piece of disappointment worthy of all "four letter words" to describe it; the gloss finish looked as if it had been placed on wax paper to dry, the abalone inlays were broken and missing, the sound was metallic. Musiciansfriend.com gearheads/customer service were great and sent a replacement. On the replacement the tone is good, the action is easy and the uke did not need adjustment. The finish of the second uke is still lacking; the gloss has brush marks, the abalone is poor quality and color (the abalone "Lanikai" on the head looks as if letters are missing because the abalone is wood colored in some letters). At first glance & at a distance the uke is beautiful and the sound is a 7 out of 10. For the EXTREME discounted price I am satisfied. But for the list price it would be a great disappointment.

Lanikai NK-T Uke

By JVO

from Columbus, Ohio

Comments about Lanikai NK-T Natural Koa Tenor Ukulele:

This Uke is worth every penny! I bought it last year when it was on sale and used a coupon and only paid $220 shipped with a free case, obviously that price was much better than the one now, but its still worth every penny. The Uke is very well built for the money, sounds like Koa, looks unreal in person, and has a lot of nice features. The strings are $15 alone, the tuners are $75 Ebony/Gold grover 18:1's, the Abalone is gorgeous, the finish is urethane (not a cheap satin), and its very comfortable to play. Overall, its the best Koa Tenor uke you can buy on the market for less than $600, play it and love it!

Lanikai Natural Koa tenor Ukulele

By Carl Holmes

Comments about Lanikai NK-T Natural Koa Tenor Ukulele:

I guess thats why the price was right
First of all the service of Musicians Friend was absolutely great.

The Ukulele is ok for the price, it soulds great but the finish was less than good. It has a solit Koa top which in nice, the binding of the neck and the abalone work are also nice.
Big globs of glue were visible at the sould hole, several imperfections in the finish on the back and around the binbings. There is a noticeable patch in the back Koa laminate and much stain color bleeding onto the maple bindings.
I guess that the walue is gook but I would have liked a little more attention to detail.

Comments about Lanikai NK-T Natural Koa Tenor Ukulele:

I love my new Lanikai NK-T Ukulele. The wood is nice, not overly figured and the abalone is a beautiful touch. It tunes well and the intonation and action are great. It has a nice tone but this is my first uke so I have nothing to compare it to.

Comments about Lanikai NK-T Natural Koa Tenor Ukulele:

The quality of this uke is what every Musician should want, and get from this purchase. It's great for blues, reggae, or traditional folk styles of music. I really have enjoyed mine since I made the purchase in April for [$]. I see the prices are still rising on everything so folks if you're into ukes, and you're looking to upgrade don't hesitate. It hangs with the best of them. Ciao.

Comments about Lanikai NK-T Natural Koa Tenor Ukulele:

Its a beautiful instrument with good quality all round. The woods are good looking and suits the ukulele.
The tone is great on the whole fretboard, and the strings sit pretty tight to allow easy playing.
It is pretty loud but I've played and heard other ukes with more decibels, but it has very nice tonal qualities.
The plastic tuner buttons is replaceable - the machine heads are excellent, this thing will stay in tune - period. The strings are a bit harder to bend on this ukulele compared to a soprano sized one.

Comments about Lanikai NK-T Natural Koa Tenor Ukulele:

Great Uke. I own several, cheap to $$$$, and this one is right up there. Beautifully finished, it needed just a bit of tweaking to set the action where I wanted it. Tone is bright and sweet, and the intonation is good. As with any stringed instrument, it is always a good idea to play before buying - individual preferences vary widely. I bought mine on-line, and am completely happy. You take a bit of chance. This is near the top of Lanakai's mid-range ukes, and a good addition to any collection (and uke owners tend toward collections). You often see criticism of a uke not holding tuning. This almost always due to the synthetic strings, which continue to stretch for several days after initial tuning. Can be very weird to start with, but they do settle down. Bottom line - lovely to look at and lovely to play.

Comments about Lanikai NK-T Natural Koa Tenor Ukulele:

Novice player, willing to pay-up for quality. Bought this Lanakai Koa (my 2nd uke purchase) from M.F. on sale. Sale price pushed me to buy without ever playing or seeing it. Didn't think I wanted a gloss finish uke (prefer satin finish), but the pictures and positive reviews got me to give it a try. So glad I took the leap of faith. Beautiful uke, rich and mellow sound. Really fun to play. E and A strings still stretching after a week -- have to keep re-tuning, but getting better (less frequent need to tune). A real keeper - love it!!!

I bought this from a Stupid Deal of the Day for my son's birthday. It stayed in the box for several weeks while i waited for that day to come and I became more worried he may not like it but all that was gone as soon as he opened it up. I could see the joy on his face. The uke is beautiful and sounds great.

Comments about Lanikai NK-T Natural Koa Tenor Ukulele:

I've been wanting a tenor uke for a while now but was waiting for a great deal and I found it with this uke when it went on a crazy sale with Musician's Friend. The uke is beautiful and sounds great, being new it is constantly out of tune but that's to be expected and I'm sure it will settle soon. I think the only thing that would have made it better was if it came with a Low G, I'm switching out the G string for a low G but that is all I would change.
