OVERVIEW

Mellow tone in a striking spalted mango frame makes this ukulele a uku-looker.

Lanikai offers the SM-CE Spalted Mango Concert Ukulele as a striking edition to the Lanikai Custom series. This acoustic-electric ukulele is constructed from gorgeous woods with exotic figuring and highly contrasting tones due to special construction techniques and a meticulous process used for selection.

The SM (Spalted Mango) ukuleles illustrate Lanikai's spirit of experimentation by bringing exciting, new developments to the ukulele world. The SM-CE uke offers exquisite beauty and a very mellow tone, thanks to the solid spalted mango construction. Spalted mango has a unique tonal characteristic that has the midrange of mahogany but the roundness of spruce. The difficulties in crafting an instrument with spalted mango are greatly outweighed by the resulting tone and striking appearance.

This concert ukulele also features an undersaddle pickup (passive) that will enable you to plug in and turn it up in a pinch.

This ukulele is strung with Aquila Nylgut Strings.

I'm a guitar player and have always wanted a uke so I picked this up for my 6 year-old for Christmas so she could start learning on something nice. The entire family is enjoying it now.

Comments about Lanikai SM-CE Limited Edition Spalted Mango Concert Acoustic-Electric Ukulele:

Having just bought a Lanikai LU-21CE, this one is louder when unplugged. It does not come with a volume or tone controls and the plugin is centered in the bottom rather than offset. The tuners work well but are kind of cheap looking. Overall, this is my favorite of 4 ukes I own. It looks great and sounds even better on stage.

        Sweet Little Uke

        By Susanne Kibler-Hacker

        from New England

Comments about Lanikai SM-CE Limited Edition Spalted Mango Concert Acoustic-Electric Ukulele:

Overall, a nice instrument that sounds great and is fun to play, but a few more minutes on the finish work would have made it great.
The features are pretty standard for a uke in this price range. It is great that it comes with Aquila Nylgut strings. The undersaddle pick-up is a nice addition that is inconspicuous and doesn't affect the aesthetics of the instrument. I am unlikely to use the pick-up very often, but it is nice to have the option to boost the volume if necessary. I tried it and it works fine at lower voluimes.
When I opened the box, the tune "Ain't She Sweet" popped into my head. The spalted mango makes this a beautiful instrument with a mellow tone. It projects well for its small size. There are two minor flaws in the gloss finish, located on the sides almost exactly opposite each other, so I am guessing this is where the uke was braced when it was lacquered. I have two other ukes (both lower priced) that do not have any flaws in the finish. My only other complaint is that the side edges of the nut are sharp and irritate my hand when I play. I will have these rounded with a very fine file so it is more comfortable.
I have two other ukes with lower MSRPs that do not have any flaws in the finish and the nuts were rounded, so I have a hard time calling this a great value when craftsmanship is a key part of why people buy higher priced ukes. I would say the price is fair for this solid mango uke, but I can't say that it is a great value for the dollars spent considering the flaws, even though they are minor.

Very nice uke at a reasonable price!

        By George Petrillo

Comments about Lanikai SM-CE Limited Edition Spalted Mango Concert Acoustic-Electric Ukulele:

After this uke arrived, I immediately had to take a minute just to look at it. The finish is gorgeous, and almost has a cool, burnt-like quality to it. It is, in my opinion, one of the nicest looking ukes out there.

Tonally, the Lanikai SM-CE is mellow. It's certainly light on the bass-end, but not so much that it doesn't sound good. It does have a noticeably "softer" tone, though this is a matter of personal preference. Since I'm primarily a guitarist, I'm accustomed to a guitar's tone, and I purchased a uke for the mellow tone specifically! When amplified, the natural tone is reproduced quite accurately, and the pickup sounds good. The uke is very playable, and feels great in even my large hands.

My only complaints would have to be lack of a volume control, and some slight noise from the pickup. By slight, I mean only really noticeable at high volumes. Certainly an easy fix, but still could be better.

Overall, I feel this uke is certainly worth the price. I'm happy with my purchase, and definitely now recognize Lanikai's ability to make a solid product at a reasonable price.

        Beautiful Uke

        By BucBeast

Comments about Lanikai SM-CE Limited Edition Spalted Mango Concert Acoustic-Electric Ukulele:

This is really an excellent instrument. First of all, I think that the fact that this is made out of Spalted Mango is really cool. It looks incredible, even better in person. The sound is amazing. It has good intonation and plays very well. The only cons are that there's no pre-amp (not a huge need for one tho) and I might just be dumb, but the instrument cable into the input jack was an awfully tight fit. Amazing ukulele tho, I'm in love with mine.
