Lanikai

Mellow tone in a striking spalted mango frame makes this ukulele a uku-looker.

Lanikai offers the SM-CE Spalted Mango Concert Ukulele as a striking edition to the Lanikai Custom series. This acoustic-electric ukulele is constructed from gorgeous woods with exotic figuring and highly contrasting tones due to special construction techniques and a meticulous process used for selection.

The SM (Spalted Mango) ukuleles illustrate Lanikai's spirit of experimentation by bringing exciting, new developments to the ukulele world. The SM-CE uke offers exquisite beauty and a very mellow tone, thanks to the solid spalted mango construction. Spalted mango has a unique tonal characteristic that has the midrange of mahogany but the roundness of spruce. The difficulties in crafting an instrument with spalted mango are greatly outweighed by the resulting tone and striking appearance.

This concert ukulele also features an undersaddle pickup (passive) that will enable you to plug in and turn it up in a pinch.

This ukulele is strung with Aquila Nylgut Strings.

After this uke arrived, I immediately had to take a minute just to look at it. The finish is gorgeous, and almost has a cool, burnt-like quality to it. It is, in my opinion, one of the nicest looking ukes out there.

Tonally, the Lanikai SM-CE is mellow. It's certainly light on the bass-end, but not so much that it doesn't sound good. It does have a noticeably "softer" tone, though this is a matter of personal preference. Since I'm primarily a guitarist, I'm accustomed to a guitar's tone, and I purchased a uke for the mellow tone specifically! When amplified, the natural tone is reproduced quite accurately, and the pickup sounds good. The uke is very playable, and feels great in even my large hands.

My only complaints would have to be lack of a volume control, and some slight noise from the pickup. By slight, I mean only really noticeable at high volumes. Certainly an easy fix, but still could be better.

Overall, I feel this uke is certainly worth the price. I'm happy with my purchase, and definitely now recognize Lanikai's ability to make a solid product at a reasonable price.

I wish that there was a way to adjust the output sound when plugged in. Aside from that, I have no complaints-- you'll fall in love with this ukulele!

Sounds gorgeous.

This is really an excellent instrument.  First of all, I think that the fact that this is made out of Spalted Mango is really cool. It looks incredible, even better in person. The sound is amazing. It has good intonation and plays very well.  The only cons are that there's no pre-amp (not a huge need for one tho) and I might just be dumb, but the instrument cable into the input jack was an awfully tight fit. Amazing ukulele tho, I'm in love with mine.
