OVERVIEW

Exotic monkey pod body and Fishman technology provide a performance-driven concert ukulele.

With its solid monkey pod body, Lanikai's SMP-CCA concert ukulele has incredible projection with an exotic and enviable appearance. Gold-plated Grover tuning machines ensure long hours of stress-free strumming.

The acoustic-electric concert uke produces clear ukulele tone, with more projection than the standard soprano body. It's ideal for on-stage performance—whether rhythmic strumming, or working out some inspired melodies, the projection and clarity of this Lanikai ukulele is significant.

Unadorned by synthetic enhancements, this series captures the pure essence and beauty of the natural world. The Lanikai Exotic Series features a solid top, back, and sides, slotted headstock, rosewood fingerboard and bridge, maple and rosewood skunk stripe and an ovangkol neck. A custom wide bone nut was used to increase the string spacing, making this acoustic-electric ukulele more comfortable for guitarists who are expanding their sonic palette with a Lanikai uke. And thanks to the cutaway design, you have comfortable access to the instrument's entire fretboard at your fingertips.

This acoustic-electric ukulele comes equipped with a Fishman Sonitone undersaddle pickup, and a Sonicore preamp. The amplification is clear and powerful, with slider controls for treble, bass, and volume. Battery replacement is quick and effortless with the easily accessible compartment.

With the easy playability, and included instruction booklet written by renowned ukulele instructor Mary Lou Dempler, you will be playing in a matter of minutes. If you have never played ukulele before, get ready for a world of fun. The ukulele is an addicting instrument that can, and will be, taken everywhere. If you can play one ukulele you can play them all.

This Lanikai SMP-CCA concert ukulele is strung with Aquila Nylgut strings.

The neck on this instrument is too thick for comfort and the workmanship is sub-standard. This is the second Lanikai I buy, and both are hard to play.

Comments about Lanikai SMP-CCA Solid Monkey Pod Concert Cutaway Acoustic-Electric Ukulele:

I recently added this Lanikai to my stable of ukes (yes, I suffer from UAI - ukulele acquisition syndrome), and am very pleased with it. Right out of the box, the action was nice and low. Beautiful wood, cut thin for great "sparkle" and projection. The satin finish is very thin, which some will argue is better for tone. A few tweaks were necessary to get it to my complete liking. All the edges around the body, the headstock and the nut felt a little sharp, so I radiused them slightly with a small rubber sanding block. I filed a few fret ends that felt rough, and deepened the nut slots a bit to lower the strings at the nut. I then went over the whole uke with 0000 steel wool, particularly smoothing the back of the neck. It is a wonderful, bright-sounding uke. The monkey pod wood (solid wood everywhere) is beautifully grained and figured. The uke is not as fancily adorned with inlays as some others in the price range. As noted earlier, the wood cut thin for resonance. If anything, it may be a bit fragile. As is typical of slotted headstocks, it is a bit thick in order to mount the Grover tuning machines. The neck is a bit thicker and wider than some other concert-sized ukes, which makes it easier to finger with my big hands. The electronics are a nice bonus, but I haven't tried them. The cutaway body is cool looking, but not really that functional as the frets are really close together that high on the neck. Definitely a 5-star uke, but I gave I 4 because of all the tweaking I had to do to perfect it.

                Playing for 2 years.
To my ear, good on projection, resonance, sustain and intonation.
                Very bright sound.
Only 4 stars because I plan on spending a long time finding my 5 star uke.

Comments about Lanikai SMP-CCA Solid Monkey Pod Concert Cutaway Acoustic-Electric Ukulele:

This Uke was purchased just for fun, but, it is a really sweet sounding instrument & mine has very nice intonation. Not all uke's are created equal, I say this having just played about 20 different ukulele's at the 2015 NAMM show including one that would cover about 8 months of my mortgage! This particular model has a couple of great things going for it. 1) Tone, Tone, Tone! A very musical, sweet tone. In fairness I haven't plugged it in yet (I've owned it for over a year) so I can't comment on that. 2) It looks really cool. I was in the market for a monkey pod uke for sentimental reasons, but, other than some of the gorgeous koa wood models out there this one is very nice to look at. It is very lightly finished with an extremely light varnish, the grain is still very open and visible (in fact it might not be varnished at all - maybe oil or wax rubbed?) I don't use the cutout for actually playing, just for fooling around when I pretend to solo, but it looks really cool. 3) The instrument is very playable - I don't find myself fighting the frets or having to work too hard to get good contact with the neck. So far I am really pleased with my Lanikai!
