      OVERVIEW

      Versatile, multicultural tuning!

Lee designed this harp to produce soulful, Eastern European sounds. 5 notes have been changed from standard major tuning making Yiddish, French, Italian, Greek, Asian, Middle Eastern, gypsy and folk styles much easier to play.

Built in Japan to his exacting standards and incorporating new techniques and materials, it was in 1983 that Lee Oskar introduced his new harmonica. The radically different harp design grew out of Lee's frustration with the lack of quality and consistency in the mouth harps of the day. The design also benefited from Oskar's insights as a seasoned recording and touring pro.

      The Dane's Design
Central to Oskar's design is a smooth plastic comb that doesn't swell like traditional wood combs. Aside from being easier to keep clean, the plastic comb is impervious to the swelling of conventional harmonica wood combs that can tear up the player's lips. By making affordable replacement reed plates available, Oskar's harps can be easily refurbished. You no longer need to toss out a harmonica because a reed or two has gone south. Replacement reed plates are available for every model in the Lee Oskar harmonica lineup and installation is easy since they mount to the comb with just three self-tapping screws. The reed plates have wide chambers and narrow dividers for faster, easier playing. A precision-molded, recessed bed holds the reed plate securely to prevent air leakage and project a bigger sound. The corrosion-proof, stainless steel cover plates are also engineered for excellent projection and tone. (Replacement cover plates are also available.) Lee Oskar harmonicas are tuned to 441-plus hertz for a brighter sound. With equal tuning by octaves, Lee Oskar harps have excellent intonation for blowing highly articulate, single-note leads.

      More Keys and Modes
Lee's innovation didn't stop with a better-designed harp. Recognizing the need for harmonicas tuned in other than the major and natural minor diatonic scales, he introduced the Melody Maker and Harmonic Minor series that make it easier to play melodies difficult if not impossible to play with a standard diatonic harmonica. Another indication of Oskar's hard-won knowledge as a touring pro: Each harp is clearly marked in bright white on both ends with its first- and second-position (straight and cross-harp) keys. Each harmonica box is color-coded according to its series and also displays its key prominently. If you've ever struggled to find the right harp on a darkened stage, you will appreciate this simple yet essential touch.

      About Lee Oskar
Even if you don't recognize Lee Oskar by name, if you've listened to pop radio much, you've probably heard his highly personal mouth harp style on War hits like "The Cisco Kid," "Low Rider," and "Why Can't We Be Friends." Oskar's staccato phrasing and uncanny tone-put to great use blowing horn-like unison riffs with saxman Charles Miller-gave War's funky stew of Latino, Caribbean, African, jazz, rock, and R&B elements a distinctive lead voice. This was especially true after the departure of vocalist Eric Burdon. The former Animals singer had been a focal point for War on early hits like "Spill The Wine." The band's eclectic and fluent mix of genres proved a rich fount leading to a string of '70s and '80s hits, usually with Oskar's distinctive harp riffs providing the signature sound.

There is a really big difference between a natural minor (usually called "minor") and a harmonic minor scale. That difference is in the 7th scale degree which is natural in the harmonic minor and changes the tonality of the V chord. Don't buy one of these thinking you have a "minor" harmonica for tune playing because you'll find that natural 7th an issue.

In C, the difference looks like this:
      Natural Minor = C D Eb F G Ab Bb C [notice that G Bb D = a Gmin chord and C Eb G = a Cmin chord]

      Harmonic Minor = C D Eb F G Ab B C (no Bb) [notice that G B D = a G major chord, whole different critter]

It's also played in straightharp and not crossharp unlike most other 10-hole diatonics.

It's for a particular sound and is perfect for that sound. Some call it "Gypsy harp" and others call it "Eastern European" -- I had a student once who referred to it as "Harem Minor" because it reminded him of Middle Eastern tonality.

It's the same top quality harp as all of the other LO harps on the market. If you like the Lee Oskar harmonicas and need a harmonica minor harp then you'll like this one fine.

If you're thinking this is a major diatonic blues harp for crossharp blues wailing - or that it's a natural minor scale for playing some minor mode chord vamps in crossharp -- wrong harmonica entirely.

Try it for some "Gypsy Harp" improv and you'll be hooked on the sound.

If this review was only about the product I purchased, I would have rated it 5 stars. These harmonicas are hard to beat! If the rating was only about the supplier, I would have used a rating of one (1), if not ZERO. The packaging used to ship the item was TERRIBLE - it's hard for me to even refer to it as packaging. I've never seen anything like it. Thank goodness this harp is sold in a pretty strong plastic case. Otherwise, my harmonica would have probably arrived damaged. It was simply dropped into an over sized (about 9"x12"), very thin plastic (not padded), shipping envelope/bag. No padding of any kind was used to protect the harmonica. I've purchased quite a few items from this supplier over the years, including numerous harmonicas, and I don't recall seeing this level of neglect before now. Either their shipping standards have gone the way of cost-cutting, or the person doing the packaging that day was extremely careless (meaning he or she didn't care) in regards to how the item would arrive at its destination. It's a miracle the case and the harp weren't smashed to pieces!
BOTTOM LINE: I could have purchased this harmonica from any one of 10-20 (or more) suppliers for very little more. When I need musical instruments or supplies again, it'll be easy to choose a supplier who cares enough about customer satisfaction to carefully pad and protect its products for shipping. As of now, I find this supplier's shipping practices to be unacceptable. Hopefully those practices will change.

Comments about Lee Oskar Harmonic Minor Harmonica:

Great harps. Oskars can have confusing labels, so remember that harmonic minors are labelled straight (blowing) whereas naturals are labelled cross (sucking). Harmonic minor also includes major 7th (half step below octave) whereas natural is whole step below octave. Some say it gives the harmonic minor harp a mid-east sound. I think playing this harp straight creates a sound like a chromatic played in cross. All in all, I'm very pleased with the tone and playability. Good purchase. Thanks MF.

Some of the lower keys seem to be a bit loose needs some adjustment. I received this harmonica with a crushed case the box it was shipped in was not damaged.

Comments about Lee Oskar Harmonic Minor Harmonica:

I'm primarily a bass and keyboard player, but since I've chosen the instruments with the heaviest rigs, I wanted to get more serious in my harp playing for the times I just wanted to jam at a moment's notice. I've messed around with the harp since 2005, but I found that I really wanted something in the Harmonic Minor range.
The Lee Oskar Harmonic Minor is great for me due to the plastic comb and replaceable reed plates. The only other Harmonic Minor harp that I know off the top of my head is the Hohner Marine Band which is a bit more expensive and has a wooden comb.
I've been on a bad G.A.S. with harps lately, and I've wanted to get the harmonic minor for so long, that I finally put an order through. I've been playing on some cheap G,A,C harps, along with my Golden Melody in C while waiting for this harp to arrive. When it came in, I knew this was the harp I've been waiting for, well, I should say the tuning. I was instantly playing some lines that I've had in my head that I couldn't coax out of normal tuned harps.
One problem that I am having is my #3 Draw reed seems to be I don't know, stiff? As I work up and down the harp, I get an easy draw from all my reeds, but when I get to the #3 draw,I hit a speed bump; it feels like I'm trying to suck a pea through a straw- the sound just dies. Time to open up the thing and see what's going on.
I will definitely be getting more of these in different keys.

Comments about Lee Oskar Harmonic Minor Harmonica:

This harp is good only for minor scales, as one might expect. It wasn't as smooth as a Hohner Special 20 in my opinion. I'm glad I have it for a few songs, but it's definitely not as flexible as a regular major key type harmonica, where G can also play Em scales.

I anticipated receiving the harmonica for a couple of days and was unsure of what to expect. I was extremely happy to find that the transition from a diatonic to a harmonic minor key was seamless. The sounds are very European, deep and moody (key Gm). An excellent purchase.

I bought one of these about a year ago not knowing what to expect. It is by far the most enjoyable harmonica I have ever owned. It is listed as an Eastern European or Yiddish sound. Okay, but a lot of cool rock songs can be played on this little gem too. "Paint It Black" by the Stones, "Moondance" by Van Morrison and off the wall alternative songs like Suzanne Vega's "Tom's Diner". You won't be disappointed.
