Luna Guitars

Body design from the islands, with a Hawaiian turtle around the soundhole.

The Luna Guitars Honu Soprano Ukulele boasts decorations inspired from traditional Hawaiian body tattoos. Hawaiian tattoo patterns and layout were strongly geometric with many shapes and symbols representing the natural island world: stones, waves, fish, sharks, turtles, rain, sun, birds. This design is based on a Hawaiian turtle (honu), a symbol of longevity and endurance rendered in a Polynesian tattoo style. The fret markers are stylized shark's teeth.

Great Buy

Features:

The Honu features geared tuning keys, well balanced action on the neck, and fine woodwork, and includes a pitch pipe, basic chord sheet, and gig bag.

Quality:

The Honu Ukulele has great tone and action, keeps a tune, and has an accurate fret arrangement.

Value:

In shopping for ukuleles, I found a great variation on the price.  The Honu is an excellent value as I feel it provides all the quality I sought in a very affordable entry price.

Overall:

I was very pleased with both the quality of the Honu Soprano Ukulele and with Musician's Friend. Although I had experience with stringed instruments, I had none with the ukulele, and even though I am unable to compare it to more expensive instruments, I feel it was an excellent acquisition.

Beautiful Uke, Watch Out for Pitchpipe

Overall:

The Luna Honu Soprano Ukelele we received is beautiful. I see no cosmetic flaws and my teenager, who we bought this for, LOVES the turtle carving around the sound hole. The uke has a very nice tone, and after an afternoon of being tuned and stretched, stayed in tune. The pegs are geared which will make it easy for my daughter to tune, also. Overall, we are very happy with this instrument.

We were very confused at first because the pitchpipe supplied by Luna had the label on upside down, so all the notes were completely off. The label did peel off and reattach in the right direction though.

To add to our confusion we did not know that the 4th string (closest to the chest) is NOT the largest and lowest pitch as on a guitar, violin or cello. Nothing was mentioned about this in the tuning and chord booklet that was included with the uke. (Yes, we are beginners.) Fortunately, I had ordered a separate instructional book along with the ukelele which straightened us out.

Buy an instructional book when you order or at least research it on the Net so you know which G (or A, as a soprano uke can be tuned two ways--see ukele at Wikpedia) to tune that 4th string to. Don't break any strings guessing around!

Amazing Ukulele

Absolutely love this uke. Almost a year back I bought a starter ukulele package to try and learna new instrument and got fed up pretty quick with it never staying in tune and it being very poorly intonated down the neck. I ordered this when it was backordered, waited over a month to get it and I could not be happier with this instrument. The geared tuners hold well and the strings stay in tune no problem. It sounds great even when fretted up high. It looks a lot different from the picture. In reality, the wood is darker and has a nice shiny finish to it. Also, the etched turtle isn't black like the picture lead me to believe, its only slightly darker than the rest of the uke and has a nice natural-looking colour. overall beautiful instrument that sounds great for something priced so affordably

Sounds great but some quality control issues with the cosmetics

| Review By: John Elyea | 9 months, 2 weeks ago

Features:

The Luna Honu Soprano Ukulele doesn't have a lot of features but it wasn't sold as a high feature model. You get what you pay for features wise and this is a no frills Ukulele that feels good, plays well and sounds great. You'd be hard pressed to find a better sounding Ukulele in this price range.

Quality:

I had to ding it on quality because mine came with some pretty severe cosmetic issues. One of the fret markers has a slight gap along one edge, another had excess glue around it and the top of the headstock was not sanded at all. Seriously the top of the headstck stock was not sanded at all, the saw marks were still there. However the quality control issues seemed to be only with the cosmetics. The action is good and intonation is spot on (after the strings streched and settled). In defense of Luna this model was on back order for some time and mine looks like it was a rush job trying to fill orders but that's not really a good excuse for poor quality control.

Value:

As for value it's a pretty decent deal for the price. I would have given it higher marks for value had the headstock been sanded. I can overlook minor cosmetic issues in this price range but to totally miss sanding the headstock in prodction?

Overall:

Overall I gave it a 7 because the action and sound were good and since I bought it as a beater instrument to lug around to the beach and park where I won't take my good Ukulele for fear of damage it serves it's purpose well. Great sounding take anywhere Ukulele and a good price.
