OVERVIEW

Harness the power and mystery of the turtle with this Hawaiian-tattoo-inspired design.

This Tattoo Concert Uke takes its design from traditional Hawaiian body ornamentation. The designs were monochromatic, tattooed in black against brown skin. The patterns and layout were strongly geometric and there were many shapes and symbols representing the natural island world: stones, waves, fish, sharks, turtles, rain, sun, and birds. This design is based on a Hawaiian turtle (honu), a symbol of longevity and endurance rendered in a Polynesian tattoo style. The fret markers are stylized sharks teeth.

As I said, I've been able to compare this uke side by side with another concert uke of comparable price and materials, and this one is clearly superior and a better buy. The cleaner fretwork, the slightly larger body and the better tone all surprised me; I really didn't think I'd be happy with a laminated wood instrument. (I spent a few minutes in one store playing an all solid wood koa uke, and this one is not far behind that one in tone.) This is an excellent instrument to start on, and you might decide you'll never need to move up the food chain (although gas strikes all of us musicians sooner or later!).
I'm rating this based on price and on comparison side by side with another uke of similar price, a Kohala KP-C model. I received that model for my birthday (picked out by my wife and daughter), and my daughter decided she wanted one too, so we went back adn she picked this one out for herself. Good choice!

The features on this are minimal, the most noticeable being the tattoo design on the top, which looks much better in person than it does in the photos I've seen. The woods look nice (all laminates) with even coloring, and the fingerboard and bridge also both look good. No body binding, which the Kohala has, but it doesn't take away from the design; I actually like it's minimal design (beyond the "tattoo"). There are no side dots on the neck, but the fret markers on the fingerboard are large and easy to see. And since I'm a lefty player, not having the dots on the "wrong" side of the neck is a plus!
This low end uke is very well made from good materials, even though there are no solid woods in the body (top sides back). I don't see any glue residue inside the body, and all the seams and linings are tight with no gaps. The fretwork is very good - no sharp edges - much better than the Kohala, which is rough on the fingers! Plays nicely, stays in tune well, even though it's new. Tunes up easily with a Snark tuner, btw.
Having played this Luna side by side with the Kohala, I can say that it has a much richer, more pleasing tone! Part of that is no doubt the better strings, but the Luna also has a slighty larger body (about 3/8" wider on the lower bout and 1/8" thicker sides). My daughter is very happy with this uke, and I'm planning on taking my Kohala back and exchanging it for one of these (I have my wife's permission!).

To be clear, this is not a review on the instrument itself. That is because even though I ordered it over 5 weeks ago, I still have not received it. When I ordered it on Jan 15, the website said that it was on backorder, but that the ship date would be Jan 25. I decided it was worth the wait and ordered it. Then on Feb 5, after reaching out to customer service, I was told that the new ship date was Feb 15. Now I have gone back to the website and the current ship date is March 11. This is getting ridiculous. At this point I have no faith that the instrument will ever come. Anyway, the only point of this review is a warning to anyone considering ordering this instrument that if it's on backorder, do not trust the estimated ship date. At all.

Addictive

Comments about Luna Guitars Tattoo Concert Mahogany Ukulele:

I've messing around with music instruments from the age of nine, I am now sixtyfour. Fiddle, guitar, mandolin, bass and now this sweet little uke (my first). It is gorgeous and to swipe a line from Epiphone Master Built, "rings like a bell". I am inspired daily to pick it up and learn more, the sound keeps me coming back for more and more. I love it, get one and you will too!

Best uke ever!

By Ukelover69

Comments about Luna Guitars Tattoo Concert Mahogany Ukulele:

This was my third ukulele, and I thought because of the low price, I was going to get a decent ukulele. I was wrong, I got one of the best ukuleles ever! My first ukulele is the Ibanez electric ukulele, and in my opinion, this ukulele sounded way better. And the best part; cheaper. It sounds amazing! you get more than you pay for. And the designs are beautiful, everyone was wondering if I carved it, or did it professionally. It was fun seeing everyones reactions. If you want a great, affordable ukulele, that will last you a long time. Buy this luna concert ukulele. I just hope they come out with electric ukuleles with the same designs! (:

Luna Uke!

By Derrick Auten

from Afghanistan/NC

Comments about Luna Guitars Tattoo Concert Mahogany Ukulele:

I have two Luna Guitars so a Luna Ukulele seemed like the rite choice, I did hours of research before I bought it, covered price differences, models, designs so on and so forth... Decided that I would give it a try and I am glad I did, I opened the box at work and got nothing but ohhs and ahhs from the the shear beauty of this well crafted and unique looking Uke, tuned her up, got on line and with in minutes I was playing as if i was in Hawaii instead of Afghanistan... I love the sound and the action as well as I can tell is good for Uke standards, i would (and have) recommend this Uke as well as any Luna product to any one and everyone!
Well built in comparison to the lower priced Uke's would recommend for any level of player.
I would buy another

      BRILLIANCE!

      By travis briggs

Comments about Luna Guitars Tattoo Concert Mahogany Ukulele:

I waited a month and ten days to get this product, which was very frustrating," but as my mom always says ""delayed gratification is the best gratification"" and man was she right. the ukulele that I previously had", I bought in a gift shop in San Diego California off of an impulse buy, so it was a bit crappy. But as soon as I opened the box and foam, I saw this shimmering ukulele that was ten times better than the pictures. The resonance is brilliant and the overall appearance of the ukulele is amazing. I'm not sure of the strings, wether they are good or not but they seem pretty good. I would recommend this to everyone.

After playing a Uke in college, as a senior citizen now, I wanted to get back to it, so I bought the Luna Tattoo Concert after reading LOTS of reviews. I have been so happy with it that I bought a second one as a gift for my daughter-in-law who saw it and really liked it. If you are undecided, consider this one very seriously. You won't be disappointed. The tone is mellow, the fit and finish are flawless, the strings are high quality, and it's easy to play.

Comments about Luna Guitars Tattoo Concert Mahogany Ukulele:

I've played guitar for 4 decades and own way too many to claim sanity...Martins, Taylors, Guilds and on, so when I got the itch to buy a ukulele I was pretty choosy and ready to spend a bit. When I tried the Luna concert, I was blown away at the playing ease, look, intonation, you name it. Felt like I'd gotten away with robbery. People are asking me where they can get one.
