OVERVIEW

Mahogany woods, traditional size, and Hawaiian body ornamentation.

This traditional concert uke takes its design from traditional Hawaiian body ornamentation. Those designs were monochromatic, tattooed in black against brown skin, with strongly geometric patterns, and many shapes and symbols inspired by the natural island world: stones, waves, fish, sharks, turtles, rain, sun, birds. The design is primarily based on waves and sharks teeth which are also echoed as fret markers. This electric model adds the advantage of an onboard preamp.

Includes gig bag.

I've been using this for several months now. This is a great uke! Probably one of the best bang-for-the-buck ukes you can find. It plays very nice. The neck is comfortable and the frets were perfectly finished right out of the box. Acoustically it has a strong and pleasant voice. The tattoo is much better looking in person than in the photos. The finish is as near perfect as you can expect and looks like it should stand up to years of playing. The overall appearance is very appealing without looking over-the-top or foo-foo. The Aquila strings are a nice touch and save the added expense of needing new strings the minute it arrives.

I was a little disappointed with the output of the electronics. They sound good, but the output is closer to a passive system than any active acoustic systems I've experienced. It works and sounds fine, just needs a little more boost from the amp. The battery is easy to change, available everywhere and takes very little space in the gigbag. I like the fact that it does not have a built in tuner since IME they tend to be somewhat inaccurate. A clip on tune works fine and is easy to replace when it fails (and the one I have uses the same battery as the preamp).
The gig bag is a nice extra. The padding is thin, but the bag is well constructed and does its job when hauling the uke around town, but I wouldn't suggest using it for checked luggage if traveling.

All in all this is a marvelous instrument, better than several I've looked at costing quite a bit more and not sounding as good.
Bottom line: I'd recommend to Ukulele players of all skill levels.

A highly recommended uke

By Robert Shaw

Comments about Luna Guitars Tattoo Mahogany Concert Acoustic-Electric Ukulele:

I have been playing stringed instruments for 45 years, and I own four ukes, including a rare Gibson baritone. I didnt own a concert-size, so I read the reviews, looked at the pictures, and ordered a Luna acoustic/electric TEC MAH. After an inch-by-inch visual inspection and hours of playing, I am completely satisfied. In pictures, the tattoo engravings intrigued me, but I was concerned the overall effect might be tourist cheap. Not at all. They are lovely. The headstock is eye-catching. The body is well-built, with the joints a smooth fit and no sloppy glue work seen. The frets feel fine. The cutaway body puts the whole neck within easy reach. I love the sound. There is a traditional snap to the chords that is more pronounced than my larger ukes, and the body seems sized to bring out beautiful highs. I dont expect to use the electronics often, but the pickup seems sensitive (the 3 controls may be a little too sensitive, but I dont plan to do much adjusting on the fly) and the sound out of the amp is the same sweet music that goes in. Even if you are willing to spend more, I highly recommend this instrument.

Joyful Sound

By Mark Logullo

Comments about Luna Guitars Tattoo Mahogany Concert Acoustic-Electric Ukulele:

Very pleased with the product
I belong to Camp Rainbow Gold; a camp for kids with cancer in Idaho and we have a small Ukulele Guild. while at our anual training in May I got the ukulel bug and started looking around for one that would fit my big hand and sound good. I like the Idea of the Tattoo on the uke so I gave it a try.
No I'm not a very good player but I have some skills and while at camp fire I played a little melody strum for everyone.
Now my words can't match what a young camp said about the Uke, she said, "it sounds like angels singing"
I found the price to be easy on the pocket, comfortable to play, keeps in tune for some time unlike others I have played in the past, it is well put together and the preamp rocked it at camp fire...
Wont konw until you give it a try...So go on try one on for fun and a joyful sound...

Comments about Luna Guitars Tattoo Mahogany Concert Acoustic-Electric Ukulele:

This is my second Ukulele. I've had it just two days and am having trouble putting it down.
I have played several high priced ukes and while they are fantastic, this one certainly gives you great quality for the money.
It is gorgeous to look at, great intonation, projects well and has a very pretty sound.
It is sturdy and well built. When plugged in it is heaven!
      I am not disappointed!

Comments about Luna Guitars Tattoo Mahogany Concert Acoustic-Electric Ukulele:

It looks way better than the pictures and feels warm & friendly when holding it. It has plenty of resonance and depth to the tone and is the best sounding of my 3 ukes. It produces the classic chunky-but-lively uke sound. The only drawback is that the intonation of the C string is sharp so it loses a star for that. The pre-amp is okay but I must reduce the treble all the way on the uke and on the amps to get a true chunky sound when plugged in. I have performed with it a couple of times so far. All of the uke players who try it want one.

The average rating on this uke should be higher than it is but a couple of the reviewers clicked the wrong number of stars (based on what they said in their text). One gave it a 5 star review but entered 1 star, and one said she rated it 4 stars but entered 2 stars.

Comments about Luna Guitars Tattoo Mahogany Concert Acoustic-Electric Ukulele:

Looked better than pics, decent sound given the low price and laminate wood. sounds nice through amp, good projection without amp. Would be nice if preamp had onboard tuner, otherwise good value for the money. I'm a guitarist but enjoy noodling with it.

Comments about Luna Guitars Tattoo Mahogany Concert Acoustic-Electric Ukulele:

This ukulele appears to be well-built. No glue blobs, rough edges or wonky binding. While I'm no ukulele expert I think the tone unplugged was pretty good. My wife has a solid top Koa wood concert ukulele and it seems to be a bit brighter, this one's more mellow which I personally like. The first uke we got had electronics that were doa. Musician's Friend were excellent in facilitating a quick return of the first ukulele and super fast to ship out the new one. The new one works great. Amplified it took some tweaking both on the amp and the onboard electronics to get the tone I wanted but once dialed in it sounds nice. At this price point buying this is a no-brainer, especially with the MF return policy. Try it, you'll like it!
