I am a school music teacher and bought these to use with my classes. The kids loved the dolphin shaped tuners. I found them easy to tune, and the variety of colors was and is great fun! So many children these days want to be guitar players. These ukuleles are an affordable way to begin skill building that can be applied to guitars when the children are bigger - though my high school seniors loved them, too!
This is a bargain priced ukulele that does everything such a ukulele should do. After the nylon strings were stretched out by a week of constant tuning, they began to hold their pitches quite well. The brown ones had slightly better sound than the other ten colors.
I bought 22 of these ukes, 2 each of the eleven colors. They survived four weeks of elementary children from grade 1 - 6 in very good shape, even the ones that were dropped. They have a nice tone (especially the brown ones) and sound great.

I think the brown ones sounded better because a different sort of finish was used, rather than the very attractive looking glossy paint.
Like the ad says, at this price, you can buy more than one to coordinate with your outfit.

Right off the bat, I have to complain how much a nuisance this thing is to keep in tune. Even after a week of letting it settle and regularly pulling it back in tune, it would fall out of tune after about 5-10 minutes of playing, and noticeably so.

It's also got some problems with intonation. Many of the frets are poorly placed, so playing anything more than basic chords isn't recommended, as they will sound very off. Even some of the lower registers are very poorly intonated, and there's no way to adjust this short of getting the saddle/bridge off and placing it in a slightly better spot, which is more work than it's worth.

Negative things aside, the uke still has a pretty good sound. I've played ones more expensive as this that didn't sound as nice, and it's a very sturdy instrument.

Overall, it's a good ukelele if you aren't sure you want a ukelele yet, are a beginner, or just want one to screw around with. I wouldn't recommend using it for any serious work, such as recording or doing a gig. You -will- have to get over the constant re-tuning problems, but once you do, it's a very fun instrument to play, and it's something anyone can pick up.

I'm a guitar player and bought this for my daughter. She really likes it. In playing it myself I found it sounds good, is solid, and a good starter. It doesn't stay in tune super well, but I think that's what you get when you step up to the more expensive ukes. It's serving it's purpose well here!

I purchased this for my college bound daughter and it's perfect! It took a little effort to get it tuned the first day, but after that, just a little tweaking. She has already picked up several songs that she can play and is really enjoying it. Great value in a first Uke!

I purchased this Ukulele as a gift for my young niece. It is really cute, she loved the color, and it gets a nice tone. The downside is that it goes out of tune easily. I can tune it no problem, but my nieces family is not musical and can't.

Played guitar for a couple years. Bought this on a whim so that i had an instrument to take with me when i went out. Was able to learn the basic chords in an hour or so. Took it out pub crawling. If you take a guitar out to the pub you run the risk of appearing pretentious, but a Uke comes off as playful and fun. Was a hit everywhere, played for drinks, made new friends. Easy to learn, easy to play, sounds beautiful. These Mahalo Ukes are real gems. Get em while you can. Order 5 and give them away as you meet people. On my 3rd now.

Comments about Mahalo U-30 Painted Soprano Ukulele:

I bought two of these for gifts (that have not been given yet), but chose this brand because of a Mahlo U320T/G tenor ukulele that was super well made and nice sounding. I wanted a soprano so stayed with Mahalo and bought a brown U30. It too is well made and nice sounding. It may not project as well as the tenor but, it's not a tenor. The two actually getting reviewed now are red and the finish is great. One is perfect and the other has a very minor paint run. More importantly, once tuned, they both (and I'll also include my original brown one here) sound identical and they all have exactly the same action. The action is about perfect for me too. Point is here that although these Mahalo ukes don't cost a lot, I'd say the quality control is top notch. The strings on the U30's are nylon and will stretch a lot when first tuned requiring constant tuning for a short while. That's a characteristic of nylon stings. IT"S NOT THE INSTRUMENT, so either replace the strings right away or get an inexpensive tuner and become more intimate with the tuning procedure. The tuning will be closer and closer each time you pick it up and within a week, if you play it regularly, it will settle down. I was lucky to get the two red ones from M F on a great but short sale, but even at their regular price, these guys are worth it.
