I am a school music teacher and bought these to use with my classes. The kids loved the dolphin shaped tuners. I found them easy to tune, and the variety of colors was and is great fun! So many children these days want to be guitar players. These ukuleles are an affordable way to begin skill building that can be applied to guitars when the children are bigger - though my high school seniors loved them, too!
This is a bargain priced ukulele that does everything such a ukulele should do. After the nylon strings were stretched out by a week of constant tuning, they began to hold their pitches quite well. The brown ones had slightly better sound than the other ten colors.
I bought 22 of these ukes, 2 each of the eleven colors. They survived four weeks of elementary children from grade 1 - 6 in very good shape, even the ones that were dropped. They have a nice tone (especially the brown ones) and sound great.
I think the brown ones sounded better because a different sort of finish was used, rather than the very attractive looking glossy paint.
Like the ad says, at this price, you can buy more than one to coordinate with your outfit.

Right off the bat, I have to complain how much a nuisance this thing is to keep in tune. Even after a week of letting it settle and regularly pulling it back in tune, it would fall out of tune after about 5-10 minutes of playing, and noticeably so.
It's also got some problems with intonation. Many of the frets are poorly placed, so playing anything more than basic chords isn't recommended, as they will sound very off. Even some of the lower registers are very poorly intonated, and there's no way to adjust this short of getting the saddle/bridge off and placing it in a slightly better spot, which is more work than it's worth.
Negative things aside, the uke still has a pretty good sound. I've played ones more expensive as this that didn't sound as nice, and it's a very sturdy instrument.
Overall, it's a good ukelele if you aren't sure you want a ukelele yet, are a beginner, or just want one to screw around with. I wouldn't recommend using it for any serious work, such as recording or doing a gig. You -will- have to get over the constant re-tuning problems, but once you do, it's a very fun instrument to play, and it's something anyone can pick up.

Comments about Mahalo U-30 Painted Soprano Ukulele:
I thought it would be ok. Such a small instrument, what could go wrong? It is playable but not enjoyable. Lots of fret buzz and tone is only average. Better to purchase at a local music store. Don't buy an instrument through the mail.

Comments about Mahalo U-30 Painted Soprano Ukulele:
Bought this for my 5 year old's birthday at same time as getting one for my 9 year old's birthday. They always ask to play my uke, so I decided to get them each one. Thanks to Musician's Friend & Mahalo, I can afford to. This is real value. Shipped super fast. Strong, attractive, nice low action. Takes some work to keep in tune, but that can be expected. Soon we'll all be jamming!

Comments about Mahalo U-30 Painted Soprano Ukulele:
This ukulele is great for the price. The action is nice and low, and it shipped super fast. It takes a little work to keep in tune, but isn't that true of all but the most expensive stringed instruments?

Bought the brown Mahalo for grandsons. Easy to tune, stays tuned, decent sound, and one of the best values I've seen in this line. Thanks to the Musicians Friend telephone rep I spoke to before purchasing sight-unseen. Kids are thrilled with it and I am very satisfied.

Comments about Mahalo U-30 Painted Soprano Ukulele:
Purchased the brown as the reviews said it had better sound than the other painted ones, for my husband, the guitar player for Christmas. It shipped quickly, He loves it, The Uke is a challenge for him as he says it is just about the opposite of playing a guitar. He keeps his tuner attached, so that he can tune as he goes, until he gets the nylon strings broken in. His name is Tim, He has gotten a lot of requests for Tip Toe through the Tulips. :)

Comments about Mahalo U-30 Painted Soprano Ukulele:
I had a little trepidation about ordering this uke after reading several reviews about not being able to keep the uke tuned. I was pleasantly surprized that it tuned easily, after "stretching" the strings, the tuning machines are decent, and the tone is quite good, especially for a cheap uke. Excellent instument for a beginner, I bought this for my granddaughter, and could not ask for a better value. If she sticks with it, next year we will get her a better one, but for now, at this price, this can't be beat.

Comments about Mahalo U-30 Painted Soprano Ukulele:
I REALLY LOVE THESE LITTLE UKES! I have about a dozen of them. They get roughed up by all sorts of kids ages 1-100yrs and really handle alot of abuse! They have a good sound for such a low price & it's a great instrument for someone getting started. A 2 year old can bang this thing around and it will hold it's own! You need an electronic tuner & you have to be patient while the strings stretch out. It takes alot of tuning the 1st week or so. My only complaints are that the yellow is a mustard color, the purple is too dark and the green is swamp green. The pink & baby blue were my favorites. Now I just got the smiley face one. It has a much better color yellow & gets alot of attention. Everybody loves it!
