I am a school music teacher and bought these to use with my classes. The kids loved the dolphin shaped tuners. I found them easy to tune, and the variety of colors was and is great fun! So many children these days want to be guitar players. These ukuleles are an affordable way to begin skill building that can be applied to guitars when the children are bigger - though my high school seniors loved them, too!
This is a bargain priced ukulele that does everything such a ukulele should do. After the nylon strings were stretched out by a week of constant tuning, they began to hold their pitches quite well. The brown ones had slightly better sound than the other ten colors.
I bought 22 of these ukes, 2 each of the eleven colors. They survived four weeks of elementary children from grade 1 - 6 in very good shape, even the ones that were dropped. They have a nice tone (especially the brown ones) and sound great.

I think the brown ones sounded better because a different sort of finish was used, rather than the very attractive looking glossy paint.
Like the ad says, at this price, you can buy more than one to coordinate with your outfit.

Right off the bat, I have to complain how much a nuisance this thing is to keep in tune. Even after a week of letting it settle and regularly pulling it back in tune, it would fall out of tune after about 5-10 minutes of playing, and noticeably so.

It's also got some problems with intonation. Many of the frets are poorly placed, so playing anything more than basic chords isn't recommended, as they will sound very off. Even some of the lower registers are very poorly intonated, and there's no way to adjust this short of getting the saddle/bridge off and placing it in a slightly better spot, which is more work than it's worth.

Negative things aside, the uke still has a pretty good sound. I've played ones more expensive as this that didn't sound as nice, and it's a very sturdy instrument.

Overall, it's a good ukelele if you aren't sure you want a ukelele yet, are a beginner, or just want one to screw around with. I wouldn't recommend using it for any serious work, such as recording or doing a gig. You -will- have to get over the constant re-tuning problems, but once you do, it's a very fun instrument to play, and it's something anyone can pick up.

Comments about Mahalo U-30 Painted Soprano Ukulele:

Overall it's just a cheap (price wise) little Uke that is decent quality. Well worth the money. I play it a lot, it's a lot of fun to play this little thing and learning Uke chords. I would recommend this product to someone who is new to playing Uke.
Pretty simple, not a whole lot of features on a Uke.
For the money I was expecting a less quality product. It's actually not bad. The tuning knobs seem to be fair quality and the wood is decent as well. It's just the strings that come with it are pretty cheap I think. From everywhere that I read about this product they all said to buy seperate strings.
Great value for the product.Uke, bag a set of strings. Can't beat that.

U-30 Uke

Comments about Mahalo U-30 Painted Soprano Ukulele:

Ok, so first of all, let me set the stage for everyone: I'm going on vacation and was looking for a travel guitar in my price range. Couldn't find one. My girlfriend suggested I buy a uke: they're cheaper and smaller so they'd be easier to play. I thought it was a good idea and went poking about looking for something cheap, playable, and fun.

What I found was the Mahalo U-30. I thought the colors were cool and gave them some character so I bought a white one (I thought the white with black looked really sharp. What I got was a yellow one (I was sent the wrong one). At first I was a little disappointed but I didn't have time to send it back and still get it in time for my vacation so I just kept it. I'm glad I did because the color is growing on me.

Anyway, I can't put it down! I am having a lot of fun learning chords and trying to make some music with them. I'm playing so much that the black pain on the side of the fret board is wearing off onto my fingers (not impressed with this).

I did change the strings out right away because almost every review I read said to do this. I put on some Martin strings and they really sing.

The tuners don't function all that well, but they look pretty neat with the dolphin motif. However, they are starting to keep better tune now that I've tightened them up.

Would I recommend this product? Yes. I already have, in fact. This is a great uke for someone who is just getting started and wants to just have fun. Totally worth the $20. If you like it and want to get serious, upgrade. If you don't like it, you're not too invested.

Best for Beginners

Comments about Mahalo U-30 Painted Soprano Ukulele:

This Mahalo was my first uke. When I first got it, I was surprised by the lightness, being so used to guitars, and it felt a little toy-like. However, I had done some research on this model, so I had a new set of nylon uke strings on the ready. And what a HUGE difference they made. Don't discount this uke until you've restrung it. This is a great uke for beginners, with an easy entry price and durable design. The sound isn't as rich as some pricier ukes, but it is plenty fine sounding for learning, even some casual performing. Just remember to restring with some better quality nylons and you should be gold. Also, I'd recommend getting a good clip-on uke tuner, if you don't have one already. The strings will take some time to stretch and even then, the uke can fall out of tune on a fair basis. But I don't mind, because it just takes a minute before a performance to give it a quick tune with the tuner and then it's ready to go all show long!

You get what you pay for

Comments about Mahalo U-30 Painted Soprano Ukulele:

U-30 Painted Soprano UkuleleI really hate to give this a bad review because it's so darn cute but I'm disappointed with my purchase and I based my decision on other reviews. I don't have a problem keeping it in tune but if I try to pick a song it doesn't sound good. It's like the frets don't have correct spacing. Even if it's tuned perfectly some notes are sharp when pressing on the strings. I can't even play a scale without it sounding really bad. I even tried putting better strings on it. I think it helped but it still doesn't sound good. I'm not a ukulele expert but if you can tell when a note is sharp or flat this instrument will drive you crazy.

Comments about Mahalo U-30 Painted Soprano Ukulele:

I purchased 6 of these ukes as Christmas gifts for family members who range in age from 5 to 98. Everyone was very happy especially my 98 year old father in law who first played a uke in 1925 !
The tuning issue is string related. The original strings stretch a lot so the uke won't stay in tune very long at first. The sound is quite good for an entry level instrument and the smile factor is great!

Ordered this one to teach my wife a few chords for fun. Do yourself a favor and shave a half millimeter off the bridge saddle and change the strings to some Martin clear fluorocarbons. Major improvement. Highly recommended and fun !

I bought this Uke for my son as a gift. He wanted one so he could "pack it" anywhere. (easier than his guitar) That's exactly what he's doing, it hasn't left his hands since we un-boxed it. price/joy ratio is at about a penny a smile currently.

Comments about Mahalo U-30 Painted Soprano Ukulele:

We purchased the ukulele for our 4 yr old grandson as he has been showing an interest in daddy's guitar. Grandson loves the uke, son loves playing together with him. Uke is durable, holds up to a 4 year old, has a nice sound when tuned. Nice look, pretty colors,
Nice look, pretty color. Tuners work well.
Holds up to a four year old budding musician.
Worth the cost to get a tunable and playable real instrument into the hands of a young child. Adults in family also have ukes and like this one very much.
