Bet affordable oval hole mandolin

By Mandoman-IZ4yN

from Atlanta, GA

Comments about Michael Kelly A O Mandolin:

This is a fantastic mandolin made by Michael Kelly. I prefer the oval hole to the f hole models because they project much better and they don't have as much airiness. Lots of mandolins I've played from this rice range tend to be pretty shrill. This model has a great mellow tone. The only thing that bugs me about it is the tuners which are a bit on the cheap side and are hard to turn. Overall, I definitely recommend this mandolin.

Comments about Michael Kelly A O Mandolin:

I have been playing mandolin off and on for 30 something years. A 20 thousand dollar Gibson is not in my future. I've owned probably 30 or more mandolins, mostly cheap imports with names I can't remember. I wasn't expecting too much from MK for the price but I am very pleased with the quality and playability of this instrument. I lowered the action via truss rod and bridge adjustments along with new .010 D'addarios and wowzers brain. Small noticeable blemishes in the binding detail and soundhole area but overall an excellent instrument for the price. Deep mellow tone with great projection. I am pleased with my purchase.

Comments about Michael Kelly A O Mandolin:

I really love this mandolin. With the oval sound hole, it has such a nice ring and projection. I am sure it would mike very well, though I haven't tried that yet - I play other instruments professionally, but not mandolin (yet). I would pass on two cautions - this would not be best suited for bluegrass playing, as it (as I expected) does not have the "bark" you want for chopping rhythm, and the fret board is a little narrower than some which could cause some problems if you have large or broad fingers. I am very satified with the way it was set up, though I may bring it to a mando pro friend to see if it might want a tweak or two.

Comments about Michael Kelly A O Mandolin:

I had my eye on this mandolin for a while. I already own an F5 model and wanted an A model with an oval hole.
When I saw it on sale,I got it. What a beauty it is. It has a flawless finish with beautiful abalone inlays. All I did was lower the action, tune it up and it plays great. Sounds nice too and will only get better with age. I'm very happy with it.

    Bark?

    By JBMAZE16

Comments about Michael Kelly A O Mandolin:

Very nicely put together Mandolin. MK's mandolin construction is superb without a doubt. And the finishes are always outstanding. I must admit though, they may take a few years of playing before the tone woods "open up". After having my MK AO mandolin set-up professionally, it still sounded tinny and lacked that most desirable "bark". If this is your first mandolin, it's a fantastic bargain. Just practice alot, and it'll improve with tone as you progress in your playing.

Comments about Michael Kelly A O Mandolin:

I'm a guitarist in a rock band. Recently a friend got me to try playing his Mando. If only the guitar was as intuitive for me!

I did a lot of research, and decided the 'A' style with the oval sound hole was what I personally would want. This M/K is exactly what I was looking for, at a great price. Great tone, good quality throughout! The action was perfect right out of the box.

I'll soon be using it onstage for an added twist to our music.
