Comments about Michael Kelly A-Style Solid Mandolin:

Overall I rate this mandolin very highly. The tone is excellent-solid wood construction, cast one piece tailpiece, very playable neck. Out of the box, the first thing I noticed was the finish: it is more red than tobacco. None the less, it is a beautiful instrument. There are minor flaws with the binding in inconspicuous places. This is to be expected in a mandolin at this price point. In comparison to the other MK A-Solid model, this one is a SATIN finish. MF does not always have this label, and the company line does little to distinguish this trait. It seems that the difference between the two models, at the time of this review, is that a trade is made between the finish and the tailpiece. I think this is a good trade here- the gloss finish in lower end mandos can be thick. and the tailpiece makes string changes easy. This instrument does require set-up. I had to sand a few frets under the g string pair. This was easily done with painter tape as protection, 320 grit sandpaper, and #0000 steel wool to polish. Intonation, of course, needed to be adjusted. I will probably add an internal peizo pickup and replace the bridge with ebony in the future. For the money, it is hard to beat, especially if this instrument is on sale.
