Wow, amazing instrument!

Comments about Michael Kelly Legacy FS-E Mandolin with Fishman Pickup:

I recently purchased this mandolin, and it is absolutely perfect. Right out of the box, the action was wonderful, no buzzing, and the tone was great. When its plugged in, the quality is completely transferred through the Fishman pickup, no problem. The ablalone and workmanship is also beautiful. The only thing I would change is the nut (plastic to bone) and there is slight hint of a buzz at the tailpiece. Its nearly unnoticeable, and is probably a very easy fix. All in all, this mandolin sounds like a top of the line instrument, and performs like anything over twice its price.

A mandolinist's prayer

Comments about Michael Kelly Legacy FS-E Mandolin with Fishman Pickup:

I play banjo, mandolin, and guitar with the Coleman Looper Family, singing bluegrass gospel music in churches, fairs, and festivals. After playing a cheap import for several months, I was searching (and praying) for something comparable to all those Gibsons and Flatirons out there, but without breaking the bank. The Michael Kelly fits the bill. The FS-E is a beautiful instrument, with only a few minor finish flaws inside the curl area. The abalone block inlays and "MK" lnlaid headstock are impeccable. It is very playable, with good intonation. The most impressive feature is TONE - more than ample volume, yet responds well to both soft and subtle, or more aggressive playing styles. The Fishman pickup conveys this great acoustic tone straight into our mixer, with minimal EQ adjustment. The MK is by far the best mandolin available in this price range. My prayers are answered!

A Great Instrument at a Great Price

Comments about Michael Kelly Legacy FS-E Mandolin with Fishman Pickup:

This is my second mandolin and quite a step up. I'm quite impressed with the quality of this moderately priced instrument. It sounds great "unplugged", but even better through the PA. Looks, feels, sounds as good as those priced much higher. Highly recommended!!

Modest cost for serious musicians

By Max-mMiG4

Comments about Michael Kelly Legacy FS-E Mandolin with Fishman Pickup:

I'm a lifelong guitar player, but a mandolin novice. I bought a "beginner" Aria electric years ago just so I could cover REM's "Losing My Religion" in a rock band. Just so you know where I'm coming from.Wanted to step up to a better quality instrument that wouldn't bankrupt me. This thing delivers. After careful setup (IMPORTANT), intonation is excellent, action is excellent, tone is excellent. If you are a serious musician who needs an electric pickup equipped mandolin for a band, and want to keep the pricetag well under $1000, you won't be sorry with this. MAKE SURE you get it set up properly, though.

Best value for the money; period!

By Jeff-z_zyj

Comments about Michael Kelly Legacy FS-E Mandolin with Fishman Pickup:

I'm thirty-seven years old and played mandolin since I was four; I've played kentucky, epiphone, ibonez, fender, and even the expensive gibsons; only the gibson came close on sound and quality; but why pay for 1000 to 6000 for a mandolin when you can get the about the same sound, quality and playability for under 1000. By the way, pictures on-line don't do this mandolin justice; it is absolutely beautiful; I feel like my legacy will last for the rest of my life, but if some thing does happen to it, I won't have to shop around; I'll simply go on line and order another legacy; good luck with your future mandolin.

Comments about Michael Kelly Legacy FS-E Mandolin with Fishman Pickup:

Mandolins are all different, even within the same brand with decent quality control. Mine sounds good plugged in. Acoustic, I feel it has a nice chop, but isn't too loud. Maybe the top is a little too thick, or the bridge a little chunky. It's real nice looking - excellent finish, but maybe a little thick/heavy which reduces some vibrations. Overall, I use it for louder electric "bar" type gigs, but play a decent Eastman for acoustic messing around.

Great for a beginner or a champ

Comments about Michael Kelly Legacy FS-E Mandolin with Fishman Pickup:

This great mandolin delivers the classic twangy, and haunting aurora that you wouldn't expect from such a reasonably priced mandolin. Not only does it sound great but is equipped with the classic fishman 4 electronics that make any good acoustic instrument sound great. I own 2 other instruments with the same brand of electronics and they all sound like a million-dollars when you plug it in. Look at buying one of the Marshall acoustic solo combos if you dont already have an acoustic amplifier. Just be careful not to shatter your "tweeters" by turning the treble down on your electronics. I have owned this mandolin for 2 years and originally bought it thinking' "Okay, I am a beginner and this is a mid-priced, mid-quality mandolin that I can grow into." I have learned to play mandolin on this instrument and it produces a quality sound and feel that leaves me with no reason to look at purchasing another mandolin any time soon. Not to mention the mother-of-pearl inlays, and sunburst body make it look very flashy and beautiful. I am also a fan of the F-style body and it fits comfortably in my lap allowing me to play it comfortably for hours. I wont be buying another mandolin anytime soon. If you are a guitarist or bassist looking to expand your musicality buy this.

After 2 years hard work

Comments about Michael Kelly Legacy FS-E Mandolin with Fishman Pickup:

I've been playing my FS-E for two years now. We average 150 shows a year. That's hard on a mando in this price range. It's still working perfectly, although the battery cover broke. No big deal, considering the rough use and modest price.I'd buy another in a heartbeat. In a noisy bar, no one has been able to tell the difference between this and a much more expensive instrument once it's plugged in, so why risk high price instruments?Five stars for price and value!

Comments about Michael Kelly Legacy FS-E Mandolin with Fishman Pickup:

It would probably be tough to find a better value in an imported mandolin. Sure it's lacking a few of the bells and whistles (very simple tailpiece, no pickguard), and there's no way this is going to get mistaken for an American made instrument. But the tone is great (both natural and plugged in), and with a little setup help you've got a very functional instrument at a decent price.

Comments about Michael Kelly Legacy FS-E Mandolin with Fishman Pickup:

Just received my FS-E and I couldn't be more pleased. This is my first mandolin and I realize I could have spent less, but I'm certain I would have been upgrading within a year had I done so. Right out of the box, it had good action, great intonation, great fretwork - no buzzing anywhere, no sharp edges! And it's a pretty little thing, too! For anyone considering taking up the instrument, I would strongly recommend this one - it'll be quite a while before you feel the need for something better.

Comments about Michael Kelly Legacy FS-E Mandolin with Fishman Pickup:

It looks really nice and plays pretty well, but mine has a nasty buzz on the E string. Tried many different things to get rid of it, but still there. I also agree with a previous reviewer that the resonance isn't great, perhaps because it is built too heavily.

It's so much more than a ?step up?!

By Ray Irving

from Severn, MD

Comments about Michael Kelly Legacy FS-E Mandolin with Fishman Pickup:

After having to make do with a much cheaper mandolin while the Kelly was on back order, I eagerly waited it's arrival. The Kelly was so worth waiting for! It sounded great right away, and the break-in time is making it sound even better. I'm still experimenting with string gauges, height, etc, but this mandolin is a winner! I highly recommended it.

Comments about Michael Kelly Legacy FS-E Mandolin with Fishman Pickup:

This mandolin sounds like a finely designed and crafted wooden instrument should sound. It has such deep, throaty lows and clear, crisp highs that blend melodically with the rich mids. The sustain from this instrument is incredibly long and true to tone. The Fishman pickup (if needed) does nothing to detract from the sound quality - it simply amplifies! The action is low and light. Some of the dressings and workmanship are the only things that give away the fact that this is not a $5,000 instrument (i.e. stamped-out 2-piece tail, no pickguard, "blank" truss cover, excess finish in "curl" (runs), a little rough around the effs - But hey, LESS THAN $700!). Kudos, Michael Kelly !!!

Right out of the Box, the Michael Kelly FSE played beautifully. Great tone and intination all the way up the fretboard. Sounds superb when amplified as well. This mandolin is the best I've heard. For this price, you can't beat it! if you're considering purchasing a mandolin, get this one! very versatile! the Fishman pickups are a nice feature. Sounds great acoustically as well. Action is very nice and pleasant to the touch.

One Great Instrument

By Blake-hhU2y

from Morgantown, WV

Comments about Michael Kelly Legacy FS-E Mandolin with Fishman Pickup:

This is definatly what I would say is the most bang for the buck in a mandolin. I've played about every Michael Kelly mandolin, and I must say that this one plays as good as his top of the line models. However, this does need a few "dress ups". Like the tail piece that it comes with, very basic, I'll be upgrading to an Alan tailpiece. Also there is no pick gaurd but that's ok. The pickup is wonderful though. I hardly noticed any loss of tone of the actual F-5 sound plugged in. Great finish, paint is nice, edges are all pretty good. Playabilitly is great, I actually compared it to my friends Breedlove. I recommend this instrument to all mando players.
