I received my Legacy O the Monday before Christmas (last week), and I've already fallen in love with its unique round hole sound, its radiused fingerboard, and oversized frets (the Antique Amberburst finish is nice, too). Like most of the others, I must say that I am delightfully surprised in the quality of an instrument under at this price. I certainly hope Michael Kelly will continue to produce affordable yet outstanding instruments... I'm looking to save for an ocatve mando! The bottom line: I did a bit of research before my purchase, based on features and comments from other MK owners, I didn't think I could go wrong... I didn't!
This is a great mandolin for the money. Be prepaired to spend a little money for someone to set it up properly for you after you receive it. After it has been set-up, it plays and sounds excellent. The fit and finish on the one that I have is flawless.
I'm glad I got this one! Fit & finish is good but the finish is really beyond words,The Sound: Full/Rich,The Neck: Easy to play right out of the box,The Inlay: A real Beauty here, very good work! The Back&Sides: I got luck here mine came highly flamed. I am going to put an Allen tail piece on this beauty as it will make a really good sounding mando sound that much better. A word to the wise! Buy a NEW MK mando the company is making strong headway in building Mandolin's,they get better each year. All of the MK mando's are made with solid wood, top, sides and back they will get better with age. If you like good Mando's at a great price buy an MK you wont be sorry and the L-O model is a really good Mando for the money.Good Luck!
I've ordered three of these gorgeous mandolins over the past year. And each one was immediately returned. The first Legacy O had a tailpiece that was installed so out of alignnment you could see it from a jet. The second one had a variety of differant fret wire gauges you could see from a room away. The third was a bit better. Beautiful to look at, but sounded like a tin box.Turned out, all the frets were at inconsistant heights. Very thick Nitro-C finish. Would probably withstand an A-Bomb, but the sound had no punch, and I suspect over the years, it would'nt get much better. I have many mandolins, and know from experiance, that if your looking for a great sounding oval hole right out of the box, Wahburn has MK beat buy hundred$. If Washburn or Morgan Monroe ever choose to construct F-Style "Oval Holes", I'll be the first in line. MK. Send your luthiers to school!!
I've been looking to upgrade from my first beginner mandolin, a Rouge F-style, and wanted something different than the "typical" bluegrass f-hole's sound and look. I've always liked the looks and sound of the oval sound hole mandolins and especially was drawn to the MK Legacy O. After trying out tons of various mandos and some veeerrry long nights of research and shopping around, I was able to get this mando brand new at an unbeatable price from some great folks in Deluth, Minnesota. Wow, this thing takes my breath away, both esthetically and sonically. From the beautiful and perfect Tobacco Sunburst finish, super fast radiused ebony fret board with real MOP block inlays, stunning real MOP oval sound hole inlay, all solid hand carved spruce top and solid maple back and sides which no other maker in this range offers, top quality Grover tuners that never slip, beautiful headstock real MOP inlay, perfect action and intonation right out of the box, the new MK solid single piece tailpiece which adds a lot of mass and tons of sustain and finally the most important....absolutely the most beautiful sweet sounds which will only become with time. The Legacy O has all the top features and sound that would cost you an arm and a leg (and a few fingers and toes too) by other "high end" makers and definitely no other maker anywhere even close in this range can even touch it or any MK mandolin for that matter. Point blank, to buy anything other than a MK and pay more (for less) would be foolish unless you?re a full time professional mando player.
I am very pleased with my Legacy O. It is well made and sounds beautiful.
