The A-style Mitchell MM100VS Mandolin offers visual brilliance and quality craftsmanship in a striking package. The MM100VS mandolin is equipped with a solid spruce top and sapele back and sides for clarity, balanced high-end tone, and full projection to stand out in the jam.

The A-style body design has a fuller and more pronounced tone than traditional F-style mandolins, to sound great chopping bluegrass rhythms and melodic leads. Just got my Mitchell MM100VS. Chose the Mitchell because of their ukeleles we got for our college-age sons. As I said, I love this thing. Shipped promptly, it arrived exactly as advertised, in perfect condition. Fit and finish all very nice. Box was big enough to make me wonder what else was inside, but it was just enough space to avoid damage. Tuned it up and away we go. Nice lively chiming tone, I'm sure it's not the equal of a Loar or a Gibson, but as an old guitar player learning a new world it sure sounds like I want it to. For a hundred bucks you can't beat it.

great BEGINNER mandolin

I've had problems with string buzzing. At first it was because I had placed the bridge too low (it came unattached in a plastic baggy), and when I fixed it it wasn't as bad but still there. Barely noticeable when attached to a pickup and played through an amp.

Value:

Great beginner instrument. Aside from string buzzing, I really can't complain all that much. It isn't perfect, and isn't close, but it's the best I think you'll get for sub-100. I've had experience with violin for 8 years and was kind of hoping it would be great so I could use it for gigs, but it isn't quite that material.

Overall:

I've been playing folk music on violin since elementary school. One day I was at a local Guitar Center and decided it would be cool if I tried mixing it up a bit. This was by far the best deal in my budget, so I decided to give it a whirl. It shipped in a record time of 2 days (and note this is regular, free shipping. Kudos to Musician's Friend) and was neatly packaged. For an instrument that came without a gig bag, I was surprised there wasn't a scratch or two. The bridge came unattached, and bagged seperately. I had to fix it myself, and at first I accidentally put it WAY too low and all you could hear was buzzing. Once re-adjusted to regular position, The buzzing wasn't as bad but it was still there. Oh well. The D and the G strings are the only ones that buzz, the A and E (all 4 of them) are fine.

 

I tried to jam with it once for fun in my band instead of using violin. Big mistake. The sound is definitely beginner, and very faint. Oh well. But let me tell you, when I'm practicing and don't feel like taking my violin home or out of its case- this thing is amazing. Plus, it looks really cool. Pictures don't do justice.

 

Everyone plays guitar.. why don't you try mandolin? Fun little instrument, but this one is for beginners ONLY. And that's all I have to say about that.

A Smokin' Buy for a Beginner Mandolin

After researching the Musician's Friend online catalog, my wife chose the Mitchell MM100VS because it looked commensurate to the other mandolins in this category at a lower price and she LOVES the gold hardware and abalone position marker dots. I chose it for the indicated quality of the build. The picture on the web page shows this instrument to have an adjustable truss rod. The mandolin that arrived at our door does not. But, neither do the more expensive Fender, Ibanez acoustic, or Deans, for that matter. (apparently, the manufacturer changed the specs on this model without notifying their retailers and did not supply a current photo) Mandolins ship with the slackened strings tucked under the fretboard and the floating bridge packed in a box, so you have to install the bridge and adjust the intonation. It took four days of constant retuning for the strings to finally stabilize and stay in tune, although the neck is solid, straight and retained the proper relief. The action is extremely low, yet there is no fret buzz ANYWHERE. As shipped, the effort required to turn the tuning keys was VERY inconsistent and some thicker gauge strings were MUCH easier to tighten than with one of the D and both of the E string tuners. A quick adjustment with a Phillips Screwdriver took care of this, though, and now the tension is even on all eight tuning keys. The original strings are crap, IMNSHO, and were replaced with .011-.039 gauge John Pearse's, which made a HUGE improvement in timbre. Now it sings sweetly like a decent mandolin!!! The construction caliber of this instrument, after CLOSE inspection, is very good and no flaws were found in the fit and finish. We got this on sale for $60 less than the Epiphone MM-30S, which was a KILLER deal. If the prices were at their normal rate, I'd pay the $10 extra for the Epiphone. After the string change and proper setup, my wife LOVES her little Mitchell MM100VS, so it's a KEEPER! If the price is right, we don't think you'll find a better deal for a luxuriously appointed beginner mandolin. Pick one up for yourself and include a couple of sets of good quality strings with your order.
